I am 67 years old and my shooting eye has had cataract surgery so sighting can be problematic. I have used peep sights on several of my air rifles and they have worked great. All of the rifles have the peep pretty close to your eye. I acquired a Benjamin Sheridan C9A with a Williams sight. The peep is mounted much further away. I noticed difficulty getting the same results? Sometimes the whole doesn’t appear round? I could be erratic at times and I’ve never had that issue with my other peeps. Today I got a scope mount, put on a scout scope, and I was zeroing in with ease. Anyone else with old eyes noticed issues with peeps mount further down the receiver?

Yep, I am almost 66 and I see hair in the aperture. The last couple years I have retired most of my peep sights and I really like them. Getting old ain't for sissies.

At 71, red dots are my friends.

Has anyone noticed a peep close to your eye still works? Most US guns put it farther away.

45 flint,
As you may know, many old flintlock rifles that have been owned by one person for many years, may have multiple 'filled' dovetails on the barrel'
This is because as we age, we can no longer focus on 3 different objects at the same time ... (Front sight, rear sight and, the target.)
A 'peep sight' allows your eye to 'self-center' as you look THROUGH the rear (peep) sight while you place the front sight on your intended target.
The closer to your eye, the 'easier' it is to use the peep sight.
Try increasing the size of the aperture or, removing the disk completely and try it as a "ghost-ring" sight.
If increasing the aperture hole size results in a 'fuzzy looking hole' while shooting, use a tapered reamer (a small triangular file end) inserted from the FRONT of the sight with the smaller end toward the shooter to give it a cone type profile. (Brownells used to sell these tapered reamers to shooters who used National Match sights on their Garands and M1-A's.) ;)
Cheers,
Smoketown

Have you had your eyes checked for cataracts?
They were the cause of my fuzzy peep sights.

Yep, that & several other ailments. Comes with old age.

I too have had cataract surgery in both eyes, I still shoot my M1 and Enfields. Getting closer does help me.
