Title: It looks like I'm going to own a Benji 342.
Post by: bantam5s on September 26, 2018, 02:33:10 PM
About two years ago my mom's neighbor had told me I could have his old childhood Benjamin 342 if I was willing to fix it, but I had declined because my '79 blue streak had just failed.
Well they moved out and apparently he left it at my mom's house knowing I could take care of it.
I don't know when I'll be able to pick it up or anything, but after that it might be a while before I can get it going depending on what it needs.
Still I'll be glad to have it and the project it will be for me.

It turns out this gun would be a 1981, with a T390777 Serial number.
This means it will use the keyed rivet which I have from the mac1 kit I bought for my blue streak.
So once I get it I should be able to install the keyed rivet assuming nothing has been buggered up, then give it an alcahol flush and some secret sauce and see what happens.

Very cool! I wish I had folks that would throw something like that at me. Of course I do have to admit that my older brother passed down his Crosman Mark II and his 140, which I shot in my youth after he went into the Army. Both are doing well these days.

Good luck with the project,

Steve

It doesn't happen often, but I've gotten some things in the past.

When I said it was left at my mom's house I meant I literally, it seems they came by some time early in the morning to collect the last of their stuff and set the thing in a rifle case leaning up against my mom's car.
I'm told there's also some kind of scope in the case with it, It's got nothing to do with the gun I'm sure but it's in there nonetheless there.

I only saw the gun for a minute 2 years ago, and If I remember right the safety was missing and possibly the rear sight but I'll do what I can to get this gun going again.

You'd only need the rivet if the old one was worn, right?

If the rear sight is missing put a peep sight on it.  You know how great they are. If it's not drilled and tapped, JB Weld it on.

I don't have a 342, but I have a 392P and they are much alike.  You'll love it, even though you are a Blue Streak man!

It's missing, I'll have to figure out how you install a keyed rivet before I can even figure out if it has a chance of even pressurizing.
If it's missing it's rear sight then I may have to get it drilled and tapped for a Williams peep some time down the line.

Congrats David. I've got two Racine 342s. One Steroided, the other stock. They're a short, agile, accurate & non-pellet picky airgun. I think once you get it up & shooting, you're going love it. My stock 342 has a Williams on it & it's great. Enjoy!

I've known for a while that if I was going to own a Benji it would have to be a 34x, and the 342 is awesome as it'll be my first .22 Cal gun.

Anyone know how you replace a keyed rivet in one of these Racine guns ?

The one thing I know for sure about this gun is that it's missing the rivet in the pump linkage which should use a keyed rivet.

Congrats on the "orphaned" 342 David!
That was the first airgun I bought with my own money back in the mid '70s and the search for a replacement one today is what brought me to GTA in the beginning.
I must admit, I do not know what a "Keyed Rivet'" is...
But my latest had bent pump linkage and Rick at Precission Pellet came to the rescue.
He has a tool shop remaking them to factory specs and it was a perfect fit... very cheap too.

Now... back in the '70s the neighbor boy had a 'streak and I had a 342.... you might be a convert soon. ;)

Thanks, I'm hoping it's not missing too much and I can at least get it to pump after a bit of tlc.
I remember the gun to be missing something else besides the rivet , but not whether its the rear sight safety or camp plate.

I'll know tomorrow when I go to pick it up.

My blue streak will always be my number one, but the 342's do seem like a sweet little rifle and I bet it may become a close second.

This is what a keyed rivet looks like, and according to Mac1airguns is what all Racine rifles used post '77.

And that goes in the pump Linkage?
See the attached 342 parts diagram... Is it part # 3414?

Yes, that's exactly where this would go.

( Here's a pic of my '79 streak )

I don't know exactly what makes these keyed rivets stay in.

The pin (compression pin 3114), like the one in your photo above is for a 31x, first pic.

Your gun takes a cotter type pin (part #14A), like the Streak. 2nd & 3rd pic.

Mike Baker is my go to guy for Benji parts (Rick @ PP is another good contact). Let me know if you want Mike's phone # & I'll pm it to you.

I don't know exactly what makes these keyed rivets stay in.

A couple light swats with a small hammer. ;D   After getting it in place, set it flat side down on an anvil or similar and displace the ears a bit. Using a DULL chisel will spread the ears better with less force needed.

Well now I'm not sure what's going to happen.

What I've been told was that he had mentioned the gun to my grandmother in some way and when it was leaning up against her car in the morning she figured he had put it there for her to take as he was leaving.

My mom decided assumptions weren't a good idea and brought it back to their place when she went to feed their cats.
If they do come back to get the rest of their stuff I will ask him about it, and if not my mom is going to go retrieve it before the management company comes tomorrow and puts everything in a dumpster.
Today is the very last day they have of course.

When he had offered it to me before it was because he could not fix it nor did he like what it would cost to send it in.
things had not changed and I'm sure my grandmother has assumed correctly, so hopefully I can talk to him about it.

Yep.

They never showed up, and the management company is supposed to be there early tomorrow so I believe my mom is going to retrieve it later this evening after giving them a bit more time to potentially show up.
I'd hate for someone from the management company to throw it away because it doesn't work.

I can't really blame my mom for not wanting to make assumptions, Andrew  wouldn't really want to keep something if they had intended to return for it either.

Well I guess they ended up coming back after I had left and they didn't want to bother them, so that's it. It's gone.

Im really not happy about it , but I guess I can't really be mad at my mom.

This little 312 was placed on the back burner since it was buffed. I never got around to treating it with Tri-/Flow knowing there was one other issue to take care of, & has since tarnished over. I have an off day today so I will dissemble, buff, treat with TF, adjust the piston rod, & run him through the chrony. He should be headed your way possibly tomorrow or at the latest Thursday. ;)

Wow, and thank you so much.
I can't guarantee it'll stay shiny forever but I will try my best to keep it wiped down so it doesn't go too yellow.

Btw I did not know what these rear sights looked like and it seemed like there was just a sight base there I the picture, but I just didn't know what they look like.
I've gotta say that the rear sight they came up with for these is super cool, I really do find it to be a neat ingenious bit of engineering.
It's like simplicity at it's best. Sure Crosman has many simpler, but they're a pain to keep in place while locking the screws back down.

Thanks guys I appreciate all the nice comments.

Good progress. Disassemble him & buffed. He’s back to his former glory. Andrew’s tip using the TF gives the brass a nice gold patina. Great stuff.

The piston rod was set 3/8” on the short side. Robs tip came in handy with regards to setting the cup just north of the oil hole. Excellent compression & the pump arm stays put. Problem is he’s holding on to about 200 fps. Have him bathing in alcohol right now so I’ll give it til this evening to see if he loosen up. If he spits out all the air we’ll call it done. If not, I’ll let him soak all night.

Oh, I dislike roll pins in general , but am also weary about pounding something into a hollow tube.

It's all about the payoff, those first shots after a successful repair are gold.
They're even better after you've had to go back a few times till you finally get it right.

That Daisy 95 Jeff sent me, that was pretty rewarding because I was able to get it going with things I already had around.
I was able to make the spring tool, slightly modify some 105 internals to work, and the gun shot. It shot hard too.
I was bummed that it wasn't accurate, but even that eventually worked itself out.

A lot of folks make the mistake of oiling the inside of the shot tube. That's absolute death to accuracy! I have a .177 cotton mop tht I use to clean my BB gun barrels with. I use acetone to get rid of all traces of oil. You'd think that would promote rust but in my experience enough oil works its way through the gun from the compression chamber to keep rust at bay.

David, there is no question in my mind I have not given the flush enough time to work. Some of my guns have taken 3 days to respond & all of them are shooting at max & hold air indefinitely. If you’d like we can give it another day or two to see what happens. It’s your decision. Just let me know what you would like to do. Ship manana, or keep plugging away?

You've got the chrony that'll tell if it's been fully revived, so it's probably best to give it another day or two to do it's thing.

I cycled the gun 4x & left the pump lever open 2/3 over night. Never moved & it held on to all it's air. It is still holding on to some air but not as much. So we've made some progress. Chrony numbers have it hovering around 500 fps. The flush requires a lot of cycling in order for it to work, so I will continue to do that off & on throughout the day & run some more numbers this evening.

So I think your decision to give it more time is a wise one. I have read tearing into a gun like this can be a bit of a challenge. Even by seasoned vets.

It definitely sounds like it won't be too long till it's good to go.

David, no change in fps, so I’m going to break the gun down one last time in the morning, clean out the tube, pump linkage, barrel, & brass, & he will be headed your way tomorrow. I’ll email you the tracking number.

There will still be plenty of oil left inside him so my recommendation is to shoot the snot out of him, literally, With/without ammo & see if there are any changes over time. If not, maybe someone here can volunteer to tear him down for you. It’s been fun but my shoulders are plumb worn out.

Enjoy!

No problem, and thanks for putting in all the effort.
I'll be looking forward to getting my hands on this old beauty.

I'm not actually one to search out ultimate power, so even if it's not shooting full speed I can live with the power it will have on 4-5 pumps for 10-15 yd plinking.

Oh I definitely will when I can get some 22 Cal pellets, it's not like the local hardware store has them and I'm not going grocery shopping for a couple weeks.
I don't currently do online shopping , but that may eventually change so I can get a more variety of pellets.

He should be headed your way possibly tomorrow or at the latest Thursday. ;)
Marty, I've never heard of Tri-Flow until now but if you're using it I'd sure like to know your procedure for applying it.

What a gorgeous rifle! Can this same gun be had in .177? 'Cause if it can, I know what my next "big" purchase will be...

Thanks Mark. This Benji comes in 310 (smooth bore), 317 (.177), & the one up top; 312.

These Benji's surface once in a great while on eBay but was lucky enough to find it here from one of the members. I was searching for one that had lost most of it's bluing & had a nick or two on the furniture knowing I was going to do a full resto. So I think your best bet would be posting the 317 here.

Andrew's beauty of a sample is what inspired this one. IIRC Andrew used Tri-flow to clean up parts & some of it accidentally ended up on the brass. Every part of the brass tarnished except where the TF made contact.

The second pic in the series of four is the brass after it was buffed & polished. The photo above is after it was treated with TF. Not sure on the procedure...just wiped it down w/tf & let it sit for an hr, wiped it down again using a clean microfiber towel.

317, got it- thanks.

That's an interesting formulation to keep brass tarnish at bay, I'll pick some up when I'm in town. I actually didn't realize the 312 here is polished brass, looked like nickel on my laptop but that doesn't detract from the looks one bit IMHO. I think the proportion of it is just right. The kind of gun that's as much a joy to look at as it is to shoot. I'm not in a position to put out a WTB just now, but hopefully I'll be able to before I can't pump up a Benjamin! haha

I don't know their size, but they do look like a svelt little rifle.
I guess I'll be a bit taken back when I first hold it.

Judging by Marty's collection photo, the LOP looks very close if not the same as the longer guns like the 392/397. At least I hope it is.

This IS a good group of folks no doubt, and it's refreshing to hear there are like minded people involved in other things like RC. Hope you enjoy it here for a long time to come, too.

Eddie, I lost count of the number of times anticipation ended in disappointment. Sometimes things are blocked for unknown reasons but we soon learn why. I don’t know why this happened anymore than David but I'm glad it did.

Things like this happen here all the time. Look at Scott... jumped right in on the pellets. Great place to hang out.

It really is a great place in general, probably because it's a relatively small forum.
Lots of larger forums will inevitably end up frequented by undesirables.
Heated aggressive arguments are few and far between around here,  and we don't often see any troll like people.
Most just come here to learn about airguns or because they already love them, maybe they're frustrated with their big box store springer or they want to revive a childhood companion.
Whatever the reason they come here for they will be welcomed.

I can't remember because it's been about 3 years or something, but I believe I found this place when my blue streak stopped shooting.
What I do remember for sure is how welcomed I instantly felt, this Is just a great place.

Well shoot now I kind of feel bad, I wish this had happened a couple days sooner but apparently the 342 is coming my way after all.
Not that I won't be very happy to own that gorgeous 312, but it was sent to me after a let down that turned itself around
It was gone never to be seen again as far as I knew.

All I really know is that the neighbors wife brought it over to my mom about an hour ago and it is now locked in my moms car trunk.

She dropped it on the sidewalk when bringing it over, but it is in a soft rifle case so hopefully it didn't receive any additional damage.

I don't know what I'll be able to do with it, but from what I remember and what I've been told about it's present condition I believe it will be a long time before it's anything more than something to tinker on.
That is if it's actually something I can save, I'll know for sure whenever I get it of course if something else doesn't happen.

Thanks guys.

I regreted turning down that 342 the day after I did it, and was most excited to have it simply for the joy of working on it.
I'm anxious to see what kind of challenges it proves to be when / if I get it, it's not in my possession yet after all and things could potentially happen so I've got my fingers crossed.

David, I found this site for similar reasons. This old Sheridan I have I picked It up Is west Texas on vacation and really didn't have much of an Idea what It was. I did have the Benjamin. 177 and hadn't messed with It much, just really liked the look of that Sheradin and grabbed It for 45.00. Picked up the Benjamin  .22 a few weeks ago and was hoping to find some parts for the other 2 and ran across this site. Good luck on the 342,hope It's a fixable rifle.

Marty, I feel like over time I will like this site quiet a bit. Like I said In radio control airplanes and helicopters the community Is small because 1 It's pretty expensive and 2 takes some time to learn just to fly. With them being small groups all around It make for a more family oriented atmosphere and most are willing to help where they can. I will say the newest radio control multirotors or(drones) the most of the people don't get the family atmosphere because they never have to really learn to fly with the GPS and self flying so they are causing the CRA to come down on all rc that fly.
That being said I'm still liking what I'm seeing here. I'm hoping to make some shows and events In the coming future to meet airgunners and experience the different types that are on the market.

The small forums definitely are the best.
I'm also a knife enthusiasts and belong to bladeforums, and while the traditional knife section is itself it's own little forum with a family like atmosphere and is a community, the forum overall is big and you'll see groups of " Top dog " types who act like they run the place.
You don't see that here, and I'm confident you'll like this forum even more than you imagine.

I don't have PayPal to do eBay, but I get the feeling I may actually want one in 177.
See with my blue streak, there's only one caliber and an older one won't be substantially different so I only need the one.
Benjamin however had many different models, so I really hope I haven't just started my journey down a rabbit hole  :D

There is no question GTA is a family oriented atmosphere & I think it’s a tribute to the format used. Members can select from several categories of airguns (Gates) which evenly distributes the number of participants. One can only imagine the chaos that would ensue if all models were lumped into one or two Gates.

David , I have not been huge Into knives but would really like to do some forge work and make my own Damascus meat cleaner. I purchased 2 case mini folding Damascus strait razors when they came out In the late 80's,lost o e and gave the second one away, went back a few months later and they were out. Turned out to be a collector knife. I would think many have more than one hobby.
I also understand the few that feel like the chiefs In charge. I have no problem saying I don't know or understand.

This is just a common occurrence with large forums, you get a lot of the more elitist type people.
With small forums such as this we just all share a hobby and that's enough.

Well , the 312 from Marty is at the local post office right now and my mom is going to stop by today and deliver the 342 ( fingers crossed the stock isn't cracked or anything ).
I'll definitely post pictures of both guns when I get them.

Im going to give the post office time to put the slip in my Box so I don't have to ask them, the man who works there is really nice but there's a woman who will just tell you to wait till the slip is in your box even if it's not there because it accidentally didn't make the list of slips to put out.

Got the 342 and the 312.
The 312 has totally blown me away, I'm running errands right now though so pics are to come.

The 342 is a different story.
In general it's only missing the rear sight and is about what you'd expect from something a neighbor had given a a couple boys who probably werent good at sharing.
But the forearm is cracked, there's a few holes where some kind of sling was, and the keyed rivet while still in the pump arm is broken. Luckily I have one.
Oh and it was cocked when I got it so hopefully that's no real problem.

Suprisingly all the 342 needed was a rivet and some secret sauce.
He pumps and shoots real hard.
Is it weird that I'm a bit bummed out about how little it took to make the gun work ? It literally only took 10 minutes to make it work, and I was hoping for at least an afternoon of fun, oh well I guess I'll get lucky with the next old gun I pick up  ;D
All I've gotta do is slightly modify the rear site from my crosman 2100 and find some screws, and eventually stabilize the crack in the forearm.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pTR6WvCs/IMG_20181006_144753531.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/VSZRg33t)

Btw the serial number dated the 312 to '67 which is good to know.

It's such a slim slender and svelt little gun, it blows me away how with all that it still doesn't feel like a toy or child sized.

Oh and the 342 came in a nice looking old leather- ish Allen case ( pretty sure it's just a really good pleather ), I have no use for a full length rifle case so I'm thinking I may give it to my 16 year old cousin for his Turkish Trap Shotgun.
