Title: NOE's 34gr Pellet Mold
Post by: Jking on September 20, 2018, 10:17:43 PM
I'm thinking very seriously about trying the 34gr pellet mold but as a newbie to this pellet casting I'm not sure what I need to order. I'm looking at the 250-34-RF-BR3-RG6 which is a aluminum 4 cavity mold. What else do I need as far as the mold itself? I've seen something about a pin that I'm gathering can change the pellet weight with the way it's set up????. I think I'll need some lube for the mold and of course a set of handles which brings up another question. Is there a cheaper option for the handles? I read somewhere that maybe the Lee handles will work?? Just trying to figure out what's necessary to get started. I have about 50#'s of spent pellets that I'd hate to throw away and if this 34gr mold can produce some decent pellets to shoot out of my FX's I'd sure like to give it a try.

PS, I sent Al basically this same note but haven't heard anything back yet..

Jimmy,

The 34gr .25 cal pellet will not fit in the FX magazine.  You will have to single tray load them....Just an fyi.  The 27gr .25cal will fit the FX magazine.

The mold will come with a set of pins to change out to make the hollow base pin to get different weights out of the same mold.  You do not have to do anything to get them.

Order the mold with the sprue lube, and wrenches.  With the pellet mold you will not need the top punch...it is for sizing.

I have one set of NOE handle...they are nice but they do not fit my hand well.  The Lee handles have a taper cut in the wood and fits better for me.

This shop on ebay I have bought a number of Lee handles from (they are a Lee dealer) and has always shipped super fast and the price is right.  They even have a deal if you buy two or three at a time.

Be aware this is addictive....lol

Yes, the Lee handles will fit just fine. I have small hands, and I tapered the lee handles even more. LOL

I have the NOE 34 mold, and will be selling it, as I want to try the lighter mold.

Thanks for the input guys.

Loren, I can see where the length will be an issue trying to use a Crown or Royale magazine but I normally us a sst.  I thought they would be a good hunting pellet to try in my Wildcat since it has the different style magazine. They would fit but even the Heavies have a way of backing out causing cycling problems. Did you try these NOE's in a FX ST barrel? How did they shoot compared to the Heavies. What weight variances could I expect to see, say over 10 well cast pellets? Comparable to JSB's ? I've seen anywhere from 33.2 to 34.9 on the Heavies though not many on the extreme ends.

Knife, curious why your thinking about selling you 34's and going lighter. I possibly might be interested. I missed the last sale at NOE but I wasn't sure about the molds then anyway. Just my luck.. BTW Knife where abouts in Texas are you. I'm in the SE corner of NM.

They don't like my fast 14 twist barrel in the Rainstorm. Thinking the shorter skirts may do better. ;)

Central Texas, near Ft. Hood.

I have only shot them out of FX STX barrel on my Crown, but I have not shot many.  I have a stock pile of JBS's to shot through and really didn't want to adjust the gun to shoot a single load pellet.

On these kind of weight projectiles I am getting +/- .4 to .5 grain weight variance after visual inspection after casting, picking out poorly cast pellets.  I am trying to narrow my casting process variables down and get that weight variance down to +/- .2 to .3

Loren when I cast the 250-27-RF pellets with the longest pins (they make the lightest pellets) they almost all came out between 25.90-26.30 grains with most of them being close to an even 26 grains.  These will definitely fit the FX Mags and you still have the option of making the 2 more different heavier weights yet that are still hollow base skirts, the last pin makes a solid base pellet.  I haven't cast any of the more heavy ones yet.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Loren for sending me some of his 34gr NOE pellets to try out. He actually sent me a care package with a few 27gr and 44gr I believe slugs. I'm hoping to get the 34's to shoot well enough out of my FX's to make it worth while to purchase all the equipment. Loren being that generous was greatly appreciated.

Loren those are the exact handle I've been using,  I think the next mold that I order from NOE which will be the .22 "Hunter"  I'll also order a handle from this place you posted.  I've also learned the hard way that these molds should be taken apart and cleaned good after a long run because tiny flashings will plug them up bad.  My last run with the 217-27-RF was a good example when the pellets started out bad, I immediately cooled the mold down, disassembled and inspected it prior to the toothbrush in soapy water cleaning and saw what was causing the problems, I cleaned it good reassembled, adjusted the pins and everything went well after that.
My next run will be more of the 250-27-RF pellets because I've just been having too much fun with my DAR25 with them.
I'm shooting these at 905fps doing 47fpe and they're extremely accurate from my DAR25, today if weather is permitting
I'm going to make up some targets to shoot some groups at 40 yards.  They'll not be rested on anything but the hood
of my truck though because I don't have access to a good target range.

Holy cow Mike , 180 lbs of lead from your own range . I’m impressed , I’ve been at this for just over 8 years and don’t think I’ve shot that much yet. I’m waiting in the next NOE sale ,I’ll be buying the 27 grainer to feed the airspeed.

Most of the lead is from My Talon/Dor .257 shooting 80+ gr bullets. Well, that and .45 acp using either full metal jackets or HP metal jacket. They're kinda heavy.  ;D

I try to shoot 2-400 shots a day when weather and schedule permits.
A good thing being medically retired at times.  ;)

Man, an AirSpeed would be sweet!!! With what that gun can do, casting for it would be a natural!!! 8)

And way less expensive to shoot. ;D

Michael I'd love to have one of the Airspeeds in .22 cal but with this cold winters stuff heading in like it is the bills go way up for heating so I must abstain from spending money as much as possible.  It happened again, I just couldn't wait for a sale to come along and ordered the  217-20-RF Hunter mold right after they came out.  The good part is my mold is here in town right now as is the other Crosman 150 that I ordered and they'll both be here tomorrow.   I've been very tempted to just buy one of the big caliber molds while they're on sale because eventually I plan on having a big bore.
