Title: Colorado Springs
Post by: 1959 Moggy on September 16, 2018, 01:03:19 PM
We just moved to Colorado Springs, and I'm wondering where I can go to legally shoot my airguns, since local laws prohibit backyard shooting. Thanks in advance  for any advice from local airgunners.  Regards, Bryan

I live in the People's Republik of Kalifornia in a town that, of course, forbids the discharging of airguns on one's own property. However, for the past 40 years or so, I've been discreetly shooting my airguns within the confines of my garage and back yard with no problems. I suggest you do the same.

The key word here is: discreetly. Don't shoot super loud airguns and try to shield yourself from your neighbor's prying eyes. Also, ff you hear the approach of a helicopter use a towel or something similar to cover your bench setup, etc. The fact is, if nobody sees what you are doing, those who hear the discharge of an airgun will probably think it's a nailgun.

Shoot away.

I lived in Colorado Springs a couple of decades back.  Try going east out of town and you get to open country pretty quickly.  I also shot in the hills NW of town.  There are some gravel roads that lead into the mountains just north of the Garden of the Gods area.

You could check out R&L Airguns in Pueblo.

I went to their fun shoot a couple of years ago and they have a nice range off to the side of the shop.  Call them to find out the details of how they use it and then schedule a little road trip.

You could also try to find a spot in a national forest.  Be safe, be smart, there are a lot of people who use those same outdoor spaces so don't just walk in and start shooting.  Talk to the ranger district and find an area that is open to shooting.  The popular recreational areas will probably be off limits (even to air guns) so don't be surprised if there aren't any "easy" access areas.

I was at Carson in 97-98 as a civilian contractor.  There is a very nice gravel road from the area above Broadmoor Resort that crosses into Cripple Creek.  Plenty of places to shoot out that way as well.  Also SW toward Canon City you can find lots of open places.  It is a very nice area with lots to enjoy but I hear it has gotten pretty crowded.

I'm in Aurora and we can't shoot in our backyard either.  Definitely go to R&L.  They have a great setup.  But it is a good drive.  There's a lot of public access and there is a great range right off of I-25, but I'm not sure if they friend on airgunners, I don't see why they would.  You can always PM me if you wanna go out for P-Dawgs just need a state hunting license.
