I was given a Benjamin 392PA recently. It was not working when I got it, so I’ve decided to rebuild it. Only I’ve never worked on one of these pumpers before...
The problem seemed to be that when it was pumped, the air would just be forced out of the barrel, rather than be compressed. So I took it apart looking for something that might appear obviously damaged. Now that I have it apart, I see that it is quite different from any of my springers, and have no idea of the relationships between parts, and their functions. Which parts should I be looking at in relation to the problem I observed with the air coming out of the barrel, rather than building pressure? And can I get this part at a Lowe’s type store; or are the seals in question unique to air guns?

O-rings can be found at your local hardware store.
Look at the exhaust valve, the one with the stem. I'd be willing to bet that's the culprit. Rick, at precision pellet, or Mike Baker will have the rebuild kits.

The piece to the left of the spring?

Yep.

That seal in particular doesn’t appear to be something I could pick up at a hardware store... Is that correct?

Nope. That part comes with the rebuild kit.
