Title: Carrying pellets while out pesting
Post by: bryan123 on September 14, 2018, 02:56:28 PM
Hi, there has to be an obvious answer to this question but I can't think of it.

For those of you who, like me, have a pellet rifle that shoots pellets that load one at a time like the Daisy 880/901 or Beeman R7, how do you carry your pellets while you're walking around your yard pesting?  Maybe something on your belt? In a pocket?

Thanks

In my front pants pocket, hunting vest pocket, or coat pocket depending on the weather.

Fanny pack, worn on the front with the top open. Instant access and pellets won't fall out.

I have a picture of it somewhere...but. I just got some quarter inch craft foam at a craft store (black), cut a 2"x1" section, punched some holes in it with a leather punch (rotating one from harbor frieght) and then glued it on with some silicone (which is removable). Think it holds ten pellets. Put it on the right side of the rifle under the scope where it doesn't mess with grip and is easy to access while reloading. One side of the butt is also a good place. You just need the pellets spaced so you can grab em easy.

It may seem it would be awkward to reach into the pouch for a pellet but it's not at all. The exact position can be adjusted by the individual for what they prefer. IIRC the pouch was $4-$5 from WM online.

I've always used a pellet pouch that hung from my neck and my first pouch was a modified leather coin purse bought at a Goodwill Store for a couple dollars.......
That pouch worked well for a few years till the leather started cracking at the hinge and I replaced it with a Beeman canvas pellet pouch that I still use a couple decades later. The Beeman pouch is no longer available but this Crosman pouch looks similar.........

Origionally designed for hanging on the belt I found it to be awkward when sitting on a bucket resting the gun on cross sticks so I punched a hole in each corner and attached a wide shoe lace in the holes for hanging from the neck...........
This pouch has held up for over 20 years of frequent use till this year when the Velcro wore out so I bought a Velcro repair strip from a Dollar Tree store and replaced the old worn out Velcro strips..........
I was going to simply buy a new crosman pouch but decided to simply replace the worn Velcro instead since the pouch itself was still in good shape after a couple decades.

Ok, can't seem to dig up the picture. Here's one from online. I use one like this but instead of strapping it on I just use some silicone to glue it there. Also I space them a bit less, perhaps ten pellets or so. It's more important to get at them easy than to have tons of ammo, you can always dig more out of a pocket or backpack when you have time later. Silicone will peel off most surfaces without leaving a residue.

I just checked out the Crosman Pouch but I like yours much better.  The Over Flap would keep snow & ice out where the Crosman Pouch won't.
I found a nylon glove pouch that looks a lot like yours....cheap too. ( $ 2.99)          Best Wishes - Tom

I made these pellet dispensers that attach to your gun. They drop a pellet every time you rotate it into the next slot and have an indexing mechanism to help with ease of use.

I like to wear a few pellets around my neck:

I used to carry a few pellets in my pocket but these little carriers work much better.  I can keep my eye on the prey and in one quick motion just sweep my hand up to my neck and pluck a pellet.

It's made from a piece of 1/16" thick rubber sheet.  A scrap piece of shoe leather would probably work the same way.  Printable templates are attached.

Use a glue stick on the template
(https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/MGalleryItem.php?id=6040)

Then apply it and cut the outline with scissors.

Use a leather punch to knock out holes for the pellets.  I added a small brass grommet for the attachment to a necklace.

It's not safe to have a cord around the neck. In the right situation, it can instantly become a noose. One in a million things can and do happen.

Also, I refuse to use anything that must be opened. It is an extra step that must be taken
every time and if it must be closed, that is two extra steps. When I eat popcorn from a bowl, I don't want to open a lid or operate some mechanism for every bite. I also don't want to look at it every time I want popcorn, uh pellets.

That's why I use fanny packs worn in the front with the top open. They are common but 20 years out of fashion, and may be found at second hand stores for a couple of bucks. I also avoid pellet carrying methods that require two hands.

A nail pouch/apron from the hardware store works just as well.

Sir, anecdotal "bumper sticker" wisdom is a logical fallacy and isn't proof of anything, and has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

The same logic implies that safety glasses and hearing protection are  never necessary. It implies that neck ties, loose clothing, rings and long hair are no big deal around power equipment. That it's okay to cross a  low traffic road without looking both ways and wearing seat belts while driving isn't necessary.

If you want to disprove something, please use actual facts to do so instead of using minimization.

If one wishes to wear a potential noose around the neck or fumble around to get a pellet, that's fine. I personally feel that more safety and more convenience are the correct route to take.

I'm truly sorry if I have offended anyone, and I'm not just saying that. This IS only a hobby forum......

There was a wide smile attached to my reply.  You are reading something into it that isn’t there.

It was simply a lighthearted way of saying we all take risks every day, many of which are avoidable and completely discretionary.  Certainly I would not have something tied around my neck while traversing difficult terrain like scaling the side of a mountain but I’m perfectly willing to do so while sitting in a hide.  A blanket statement that it isn’t safe doesn’t quite apply in that scenario.

Easily restocked from a pocket cache when needed.
Pad is a replacement pad from the Phillips Pellet Holder, available from the web site.

LOL....then perhaps I should throw away my hats that I've worn for decades while shooting field target, squirrel hunting and general shooting to cut down on sun glare when needed since they also create a "noose around the neck".............
I guess that I'm just as likely to get hit on the head by a meteorite (they do hit the ground) as getting hung from my "nooses", but I don't walk around wearing a hard hat or "steel pot" either. I do have to say however that if I were concerned about my "hat noose" (or pellet pouch noose) I could take the advice of the poster that suggested adding a couple "break away" clips, but then I have enough "Columbus blood" to take the chances:o

"I refuse to use anything that must be opened. It is an extra step that must be taken every time and if it must be closed" and "That's why I use fanny packs worn in the front with the top open."
I have found opening and closing a pellet pouch to be a non-issue since both are simple one handed operations, however I don't like "dirt and stuff" mixing with my pellets in an "open carrier" when stalking in the woods squirrel hunting. My HW95 is already loaded before shooting and after the shot the couple seconds needed to open the pouch, take out a pellet, load it into the gun, and close the pouch to keep "dirt & stuff" out is rather easy. Even if you sort a pellet out from the "dirt & stuff" that fell in a "fanny packs worn in the front with the top open" (if hunting in the woods) you still need to reach into the "open fanny pack" to load the gun so I don't see the point you're trying to make. Humm.......do you practice "rapid fire break barrel airgunning"?   ::)

Anywhoo....simply different points of view and not a biggie at all!

The logical extension of such thought process is that nothing is safe, hence you are best-served by doing nothing, ever, that may have a remote chance of causing bodily harm to anyone.

I guess I should be very happy I spent decades skateboarding (the equivalent of playing on a body-sized belt sander while intentionally  slamming my body into the ground), surfing (engaging in a lower-on-the-food-chain drowning contest), snowboarding (trying to freeze, get hypothermia, contact a tree and experience instant deceleration, or die in an avalanche), and cycling  (same as skateboarding only add in 3000+ plus motorized obstacles heck-bent on trying to exist in the same place in time and space as me) without serious injury.  Of course, none of this even covers occupational hazards such as working on high voltage/high amperage circuits while energized, operating HP hydraulics/air/compressed gas systems, tuning cars as the engine ran, and even field-expedient repairs to suspension using 2 batteries, a VW generator, and some coathanger wire sans welding glasses.  IE: you do what you do to get it done or have fun.

Everything has a certain degree of danger inherent, from watching television to breathing recycled air onboard a submarine.  I'm not saying ignore safety concerns, but keep everything in perspective and enjoy what you do.  So when I have a couple pests to kill, I either stick a couple pellets in my mouth, literally, or I use a front t-shirt pocket or athletic shorts pocket.  When I hunt, I carry a pill or Altoids Mini container but generally I'm taking very few shots.  When I plink, I grab the 5-gallon-bucket filled with all kinds of stuff.  Mind you, my pesting efforts are generally limited to a couple quarry per event.  WHen I worked for an avian abatement specialist way back in 1997, I usually plunked down with a tin of pellets and committed genocide on pigeons.

One needs to be mindful of the flavor the Tic-Tac would impart to the meat when hunting game animals.  Personally, I would not enjoy "Wintergreen Mint" Squirrel, nor "Orange" Rabbit.  But that's just me!   :D    ;D
Indeed.   Altoid Minis hit even harder (larger caliber), but after all, they are curiously strong.   :) :)

Yeah but the tic tac box is smaller and fits in the pocket better.

I feel like a pellet pouch or container in the woods is just an extra step and not necessary.  I have never had an issue with pellet deformation in my pocket.  If you wear tight jeans, you might. And the front pants pocket doesnt get dirt and things in it, it sits too flat i think.  But it's never been an issue for me.

Many years ago I used to plink in my backyard wearing these ones by Crosman that came with Copperhead Flatheads, think they were sold at Sears of Jefferson's, never tested in real woods, just in concrete jungle's backyards..

I am with Mike on medical containers, I use the blood sugar test strip containers to carry my ammo, does great for the big bore stuff.

Kris, do you put anything inside to stop the rattling around sounds the pellets make?

Paper towel pieces work pretty good for me.

I had a discarded Vick's Inhaler.  Take it apart and saw off the inside above the threads. Throw that part away. Use a file to smooth up ragged edges, wash and dry it,and fill with .177 or .22 pellets. Carry in my shirt pocket. ;D ;)

I like the pellpens. No rattle and is easy to store in a shirt pocket.
