Title: New gun for gf suggestions
Post by: smellslikepeople on September 03, 2018, 04:14:42 AM
I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on a gas ram gun for my gf. She is small and I'm looking but there isn't a lot of options. I want something that isn't super hold sensitive and preferably with open sights so she can learn that before moving up to a scope. Tia

CZ634 or a Diana 240.

What's your budget?
I asked a similar question on a break barrel for my Grand daughter...
There were a lot of great suggestions if you want to search out that thread.
I have pretty much settled on a Xisico XS-12 from Flying Dragon. While not a gas ram a Mike M. tuned springer should be silky smooth.

I do not know of any low to medium power gas ram rifles.  I have and really like the Diana 240. The only problem with it is using the iron sights. Myself and others find that there is not enough drop in the stock for their use.
I have a HW30 and that is my first choice.
Any tuned gun from Mike Melick is well worth considering.  You can call or email him direct. Check his page.  Flyingdragonairrifles.org

What kind of budget, is weight an issue, what caliber? You said gas ram so that cuts the field quite a bit...Crosman, Benjamin, Hatsan, some of the Norica GRS rifles you'll find on Amazon, Diana has the N-Tec rifles. Most have open sights although there are a few that don't. All of them will be anywhere from 35 to 45 pounds worth of cocking effort if that's going to make a difference.

More info would be a big help :)

This is a good option on the lower end of the price range https://www.pyramydair.com/product/benjamin-titan-gp-nitro-piston-air-rifle?m=2603 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/benjamin-titan-gp-nitro-piston-air-rifle?m=2603)
One may find even better deals out there but it is a good starting point.

Cody,

A full tuned XS-12 would be a good option.  Even better would be a tuned HW30 from Pyramyd Air by Mike.  He has some affiliation with Pyramyd Air and can give you a tuned rifle for the Pyramyd Air price.  He used to have that option listed in his blog but I couldn't find it to link for you.  Here is his website and his contact information is at the bottom of the page.

http://flyingdragonairrifles.org/ (http://flyingdragonairrifles.org/)

Give him a call weekdays before 11am.

Thanks,

Taso

I want to keep it around 100 or 150 tops mainly because I don't know if it will catch on with her. The Diana 240 looks like a great option but like is a stand up guy to so I'm open to all options. I just want it to be a smooth learning curve so want it to shoot good without too much work

Why does it have to be a gas ram?  There are other options that will meet your needs.  And why your needs?  After all she is going to be the one shooting it, so the real question is what are her needs/wants?  A multi-pump, CO2 or PCP may be much better for her.  Given all that, do not choose a gun for her; let her make her own choice with your suggestions and input but not your final decision.

Another suggestion for $120 would be a CMP refurbished Daisy 853.  It is a used club gun so it will have markings and wear.  It would be a perfect canvas for her to make it her own.  It's a single stroke pneumatic, 10 meter target rifle with match sights and a Lothar Walther barrel.

It would be easy to cock and very accurate.  It was designed for smaller statured shooters and low power for punching holes in targets.

It's a lot of gun for $120.   :)

If I had to do it again, I would have left my Trail NP2 at the store and given this route a try.

I was going to suggest the same, but it didn’t fit his criteria. It’s a great gun in its own right. And a great gun for beginners as well.

I couldn't think of any low powered gas rams.  Just that the XS12 and HW30 spring guns were easy to cock.  Then the 853 popped into my head because if the OP's price range.  I suggested it since it hadn't come up yet and maybe it would trigger any other candidates!   ;D

I would get her a co2 rifle like a qb 78 or a Crosman 2260, especially since she is small.

I was thinking about co2 also. I seen ^&$@_=s has some good options and has the gold service. I also thought about crosman custom build on their website and making a pistol into a carbine. I have zero experience with co2 but it's on the table also

I wasn't going to suggest CO2 because I saw Ft Collins CO.
I assumed it was below 65 degrees a good portion of the year.

Diana Chaser gives you 50 shots out of 12g CO2 and can be had for $115 shipped. Rifle and pistol kit in one carrying bag.

She is most defiantly going to pick the gun I'm just trying to get suggeations is all.  The Diana 240 and the hw30 look like great options. It does have to be a smaller gun as both my trail and bone collector are to big for her. Think 5'3 and 120 pounds.  She has shot a crosman 1077 and that was about Perfect. But I am open to all options. The reason I said gas ram is because I was under the assumption it would be easier to cock and shoot without as much hold sensitivity but the co2 guns you guys mentioned look like great options. So I will show them all to her and let her decide which one and I'll let you all know. I appreciate all the help. I have been into airguns  for about 10 years and been a member on her for about 2 and am just now using it and I'm really enjoying everyone's thoughts. Thanks guys

Yes it is cold her a lot of the year. Didnt think about that. How bad does co2 get effected by the cold?

If you aren't stuck on it being a gas ram, the Daisy 853 is worth a serious look. You get a whole lot of fun for the money. It's smallish, light, very accurate thanks to a Lothar Walther barrel, and has adjustable butt stock spacers, making it easy to fit to the frame of the shooter.

It's pressure drops below effectiveness at about 60-65, Don't plan on using it much under 50 degrees.

While I know very little about it, there is the new Student Air Rifle (S.A.R) (http://www.studentairrifleprogram.org/) program and they use the Umarex Embark for $95.00  LINKY (https://www.umarexusa.com/products/umarex-embark-youth-air-rifle)

It has really taken off in Missouri area, I can not imagine they would use an inaccuate P.O.S. to start new shooter interested in the hobby.

You just don't see that gun here much... if at all.

That brings up a good point. Does she just want to "plink" or "punch paper" or are you planning on taking her "pesting" with you?
I have learned the are very accurate 10M airguns that shoot 177 at 600 fps or less. Even 20M or more with hold over.

She is going to love that green stock as that's her favorite color. But yes I'm thinking I will shoot the gun more then she will. But who knows I'm hoping to get her into hunting. She will ear wild game now regularly.

That green one is an excellent choice for small people if she wants a break barrel.

The CMP Daisy 853 for $120 delivered is also excellent.
It comes with good peep sights which is nice for people learning to shoot.
It is more accurate than the break barrels.

Except for the differences you noted, Tom, they're the same rifle. I bought one for my great niece to teach her to shoot although hers is now blue after she asked me to paint it for her. Shoots about 450fps over my chrony with RWS hobby pellets.

I am going to make a recommendation from experience. Get a Stoeger X5. I bought my brother in law one for a family gun. I chose it because its wood and its rated at 800fps. Its wood so it doesn't feel like you are shooting a noisy buzzing piece of junk. At 800fps (650fps real pellets), it has a normal springer power plant. Not something that is pushing the speed sells envelope. Over the years they have shot the daylights out of the gun. This summer I brought it home for a revamp. I put a 3-9 UTG 35yrd parallax scope on it and tore the gun down. the spring and piston came out easily because they didn't use a spring out of my Tundra. I cleaned the barrel, lubed and a little polish, then back together. That thing with RWS R10 pellets will shoot right with my TX200 at 30 yards. It is also a small gun and easy to cock. My niece was cocking it when she was 12.

That green thing that Hoosier posted is interesting but 450fps will force your gf to become a hold over expert in an average back yard. There is nothing pleasurable about shooting a giant plastic 1,000fps spring or gas ram gun. Its a shame that the perfect well behaved springer market, 700-850fps, is so small.

The Stoeger X3 compares to the Umarex green rifle and the Ruger Explorer.

The Crosman Tyro has a little more power than the normal youth rifles.

Cody....I have an old rebuilt Stoeger X-3 117cal rifle.    My 16 year old granddaughter and both my grandson's Love shooting it.   For plinking in the backyard I shoot 117cal Daisy 7.2gr pointed pellets. ( cheap Walmart Pellets)  If I want the absolute best accuracy I shoot H&N 117cal 8.5gr Sniper Medium Pellets.    With the H&N sniper medium pellets this gun is laser accurate out to 25yds. ( dime size groups or better)  This gun was custom tuned, refinished and rebuilt by SteveP-52... then given to me for my grandchildren to shoot & enjoy.  It is accurate, light weight & easy to cock. My gun has a B-3 spring in it.  The rifle barrel has a ball-detent style lock-up.  There is some barrel droop and I have installed a droop compensating, scope mount, on the gun.. There is a lead in the breach barrel bore so the pellets should be seated in the barrel, for best accuracy.

Cody...I can send more pictures of this gun if you are interested in seeing how everything is set up on this rifle.        Best Wishes - Tom

Thank You for the complement...Frank.  This one is an Old Rifle and was modified while being re-finished and re-built.  It was power tuned by Steve-P 52 and has a B-3 spring in it.  Steve said it was shooting about 535 Fps or so, right after he finished with the rifle.  Still not overly powerful ... but... VERY VERY Accurate.  The cocking effort is extremely mild.   My Grandsons are 10 and 8 years old and they have no problems cocking this gun.

I concur with the hw30s recommendations.

I would advise to the contrary on the Daisy 853 and any unmodified Stoeger- the triggers on mine were “less than ideal”.

If it weren’t for the temps, the CO2 suggestions would be great.
