Title: Springers are LOUD !!!!!
Post by: Nomadic Pirate on August 30, 2018, 01:56:57 PM
So yesterday I was shooting a couple of my PCPs ( shooting under a covered Lanai ( deck ).... )

After I was done I decided to do some break barrel shooting, I haven't touched my break barrels in a long time,

Started with the Diana 34 panther .177

....1st impression when I picked up the gun was, " man this thing is HEAVY " :D

So I set up to shoot,....1st shot, " Dang this thing is LOUD !!! "

forgot how loud springers actually are, after a bit with the 34 I picked up my Titan Nitro piston, way more quiet and light then the Diana for sure.

Without a suppressor, they can get loud in a hurry. Like the Optimus .22 I bought my youngest son for his birthday 2 years ago. Made me appreciate shrouded barrels more!

I was doing some pesting yesterday with my Octane elite .22, I have only ever shot this just outside my basement door under my deck between my truck and a wall and always thought it was kind loud,  shooting it out in the open I was amazed how quiet it actually is.  just a soft thump.  I'll have to take my D34P .177 out there tonight and see what it sounds like.  In my normal shooting location it seems louder than my Octane though.

I have only had my D34 for about two weeks now, definitely not broken in yet but I enjoy shooting it after I have shot the OE as the 9' less of cocking effort and several pounds less of dead weight make it feel like shooting a CO2 gun in comparison.

My D48 is definitely my loudest air rifle.

I always think my RWS 34 is loud when shooting from my covered patio, until I get out in the open with it. As Superchickn suggests, springers sure seem loud(er) when shooting inside or next to walls.

Up close and personal with your ear right next to the mechanics, they are loud, some more than others.  Back 50 feet and that changes, especially if there is a shroud.  My NPSS with Nitro Piston Power (said in deep announcer voice) is loud next to my ear, yet 50 foot away it is greatly reduced, still has a noticeable sound signature.  It is much quieter than my 1322 pumped to 10.

I will say that a good shroud makes a huge difference.  The shroud that came on the NPSS helps, except it was very small and could be better.  So I modified a Trail NP2 shroud and the NPSS is now very noticeably quieter.  Not next to the gun of course, just at a distance.  Still compared to a shrouded PCP I would consider the NPPS loud.

Yep, you're right Manny, springers are LOUD.

I use to have a very nosy neighbor that would freak out when I was shooting my Hatsan  125 in my backyard. I went out and bought a leaf blower and fired it up every time I had my target sessions. Covered the sound up real well. These days not really a problem anymore since I shoot mostly PCPs and that particular neighbor has moved.

Took the 34 up on the hill where I was yesterday.  It is quieter than at my bench but not as quiet as the Octane elite (gas ram).  In fairness the 34 is not broken in yet.

Yupp the mechanicals are definitely loud up close and personal.
