I have been working with Al Nelson at NOE Moulds to increase the number of pellet moulds available so that airgunners can cast their own pellets, reducing the cost per shot.... These designs are based on the successful .25 and .30 cal moulds that NOE already have available, with a round-nosed design with a 60% meplat that makes the pellet hit harder, and is required for the nose-pour style moulds that NOE is producing.... They are using their proven "RG" pin system to provide three different depths of base cavity so that you can fine tune the weight and CG location for what works best in your gun.... As part of this major entry into supplying Diabolo style (waisted) pellets, NOE have decided to name the pellets to make their use clear.... The existing .25 and .30 cal moulds, because they were designed at the heavy end of the spectrum within each caliber will be called "Magnum Hunter" pellets, and that series will now be expanded to cover .22, .35 and .45 calibers.... There were requests for shorter, lighter pellets in .25 and .30 cal, and that will be available in the new "Hunter" series, covering those calibers, plus .22 cal as well.... In addition, a .22 cal Wadcutter design will complete the line-up, dubbed a "Target" pellet....
First of all, here are the two existing designs, currently available in the NOE Online Store....

Here are the new lighter weight offerings in these two calibers....

and here are the new .35 and .45 cal designs.... It is planned to offer the .45 cal in 0.452" and 0.457" head diameters....

As I understand it, Al plans to produce these designs ASAP and place the moulds in the store without using Group Buys.... This will reduce the time required for the new pellets to proceed through the NOE system.... I will of course keep you informed as each new pellet mould is ready for purchase....

great news Bob ... I wonder if at some point NOE will offer molds with more than one design like Accurate does ... this option would allow us to try more than one design without spending so much money ...
-
Do you mean several different cavities in one mould?.... The problem I can see with that is that these are all RG style moulds, and the cavities for the base pins are machined at the same time.... Each design uses a different RG pin, or if the same caliber at the very least a different length.... If you have never seen the way NOE makes its moulds (they have a video on their website) they make many all at the same time, with the CNC mill moving from one mould block to the next, doing the same operation over and over.... The cutters are an undersized "cherry" which is a custom made tool bit ground to the profile of the bullet, but small enough in OD to pass through the smallest bullet diameter.... That is why making small pellets is a challenge, to keep the tool from breaking.... Every bullet design starts with the production of a cherry unique to that design....
Accurate use a tiny boring bar which enters a predrilled hole in the mould block through the base, and then spirals out as it moves deeper into the hole to create the cavity.... This limits them to making .30 cal and up.... and also limits the smallest diameter to 0.060" smaller than the largest diameter.... However, it does allow them to mix cavities.... Each companies methods have strengths and weaknesses....
NOE has taken advantage of the ability to use different "RG" base pins to vary the weight and CG within each pellet design, at no additional cost.... In the first 2 moulds they produced, Al included a flat base pin to enable the caster to try a pellet with a flat base.... I don't know if that will be continued, as we never got any good feedback on the solid base pellets.... yet !!!
One little trick I used on the design of the .22 cal "Target" pellet.... It uses the same cherry as the .22 cal "Hunter", but is run into the mould block 0.2 calibers further, which shortens the pellet by 0.044", and provides a wadcutter nose.... Al will be able to make both moulds with a single set of tooling.... He was quite excited about that idea.... Hmmmmmmmmmm…. I wonder if I can convince him to make a 4 cavity mould with 2 Hunters and 2 Target cavities.... Might be possible?....

That's fantastic news Bob !!! I'll be watching for them .22 and .25.

Holy Cow !!!! :o :o :o :o :o
-
Manny right now it's a tossup between the 22 hunter and the 22 hunter magnum for my first buy of the new molds ;D
-
I have high hopes for these new "shorter" version. 8)
Will be watching! ;)

Great explanation Bob I didn't now much about NOE's milling process....

That would be just great...
Thanks Bob...

My guess with the wad cutters is they'll fill really good with a big sprue hole like that.

Hey Wayne the pellets in you avatar looks really good :)

Thanks Jeremy !!! I really like them too, I'm shooting them at about 900fps and those in the avatar were sorted visually and by weight, they are all from 34.4 to 34.6 grain with most of them being close to 34.5 grain. I got a dime sized group the last time I did a five shot group with them at 40 yards.

Thanks, Bob. This is great news. I have been wanting to cast some 22 and 25 but couldn't find a mold. ;) :D ;D
-
I checked with Al, and mixing cavities within one mould block is not compatible with their production methods.... Sorry for getting your hopes up on that one.... Each mould will have only ONE design....

I'm unclear on the pins. Do you get enough pins to cast the same projectile weight for all available cavities, at the same time?

Yes. I have the original .30 mold in a 4 cavity and it came with four of each pin.
-
Brian.... Yes, each mould comes with 4 complete sets of pins.... Each set is same as the number of cavities your mould has, 2 for the RG2 moulds and 4 for the RG4 moulds.... ie an RG4 mould comes with a total of 16 pins, 4 of each length....

Excellent!
What handles fit these molds?
Found the answer. Lee six cavity...
Wish I could get a 6 cavity NOE pellet mold. Man do they make a pile of bullets in a hurry!

I just got off the phone with Al, and he asked me to supply him with drawings for .25 cal and .30 cal Target pellets, similar to what I did above in .22 cal (based on the Hunter design but a wadcutter).... Looks like he is really committed to producing a variety of moulds for airgun pellets.... 8)

.25 and .30 wadcutters? Lol talk about a blunt force trauma kill on an animal
-
Yeah, no kidding.... Short range clubs.... :o …. Sneak Peek.... 8)

Which one to get for .25 long range shooting at around 60fpe (DAR25)?
-
Just checked my email, no code received.
-
didnt get an email from noe that i can find either
-
Well I was going to hold off on the 25 cal hunter until I got the 22 hunter but with the sale going on I ordered the 2 cavity brass for the 25 cal hunter. I couldn't turn it down for 20% off ;D

Bob I remember you posted about the same thing quite some time back, I think it was during one of the group buys.

Greg, sorry I didn't answer your question about which .25 cal pellet mould to get.... Either the 27 gr. Hunter or 34 gr. Magnum Hunter would do.... I think I would get the Hunter as you can vary the weight from 27-30 gr.... should be about perfect for a 60 FPE gun....

The .22 cal Hunter (20-23 gr.) and Target (17-20 gr.) pellets are next up, they are machining the tooling and hope to run the moulds next week....
Bob
-
Bob you know which one I'll be getting when they're in the store, the .22 cal Hunter will be perfect for my lesser powered guns. I've got more .22's than I need but I like them all ;D
-
I'll be getting both, the "Target" pellet mostly for testing purposes.... Although, a heavy wadcutter will hit HARD at close range, might be a great Grouse or Squirrel pellet....
Bob
-
Bob, did the .35 Magnum Hunter get dropped or never made as I can't find it in either the .355 or .358 section nor under Specialty Molds?
-
Not made yet, but I talked to Al today, and as soon as the .22 cal moulds are done, the new .30 and .35 cal pellet moulds are next....

Thanks for the heads-up Bob, these 2 molds are the ones I've been waiting for ;D.

When the .35's are here it will be interesting to see how they shoot from the Benj Bulldog and others. It would certainly fill the niche if they're good performers in the .357's
