Title: Next rifle suggestions
Post by: trojanrb28 on August 25, 2018, 09:15:51 PM
So guys I need some help here on the next airgun purchase... I don't know if I want to move up & get my feet wet in .25 Cal or build out the .22 arsenal. I've been searching the bargain gate & refurb deals online only to not pull the trigger at the last moment.  I'm intrigued with underlevers.
What I've seriously considered thus far
.22 XS46U
.22 Benjamin trail NP2/elite synthetic $185
.25 HATSAN EDGE (enough power/accuracy?)
.25 HATSAN DOMINATOR 200S $180 (mixed reviews on power, due to seals)
.30 HATSAN 135 QE $230 (limited by # of different pellets)
.25 HATSAN SNIPER 85, MOD 87 QE, MOD 95 QE
Or go for broke with a TX200, HW97K, Walther LGU?
I can do pcp as well but I'm limited to something that works well at 3000psi or less

I am fond of the accuracy of my Diana 48 - it pretty much equals that of my TX 200 for less money.  It is a fixed barrel side lever.
Airguns of Arizona was running a special on the RWS 52 (same gun but fancier).  Take it into consideration - and yes, it's German.

+1! I don’t know how I’ve managed to restrain myself on tbis deal...

The Edge, 85, 87 and 95 all have the same power ratings in .25. I have all but the 85 and they all shoot anywhere from 570 to 620 depending on pellet weight and pellets in .25 ain't cheap. If it's the route you finally end up deciding to go, get either the 87 or 95. The Quattro is a way better trigger than you'll get in the Edge plus the SAS does help some and the QE moderators make them a bit quieter than the Edge.

Several people here have ordered a hw97 from krale in the Netherlands for not so much over your 300$ budget, a great deal and a great gun that will last forever!

The Benjamin Marauder Synthetic is $359 at Amazon.

thank you all for the suggestions! I didn't like the look of the side lever of the diana 48. The krale site was a gold mine for the 97k, but they don't have any thumbhole 22 versions in stock. they even have the LGU in .22 for $500 shipping included.
The marauder at that price is nice! I will look into that right away

What type of shooting?
Hunting? (What?)
What range(s) will you be shooting?

I like my GAMO Urban but the quality control can be spotty (had to exchange my first one). Be sure you buy it from a good dealer that will work with you on any initial problems (like Pyramyd Air).

I never pump my Urban higher than 2900 psi and I get 30 shots.

Right now I'm just punching paper up to 50yds to find the best pellet for the Urban. It seems to like the Sniper lights, AA field heavy & JSB 15.89. My groups are thumb size for my first time at that distance with wind.
I will be small game hunting squirrel & rabbit.  50 yds is the range right now.

Honestly I have a good feeling about the Benji Fortitude once it finally comes out... it looks to be a bit sedate( guessing around 20 fpe) in .22 but I bet it will be capable of more with tuning.. and my 20 fpe MK 1322 pumper is very accurate at 30-40 yards and 20 fpe...

I bet later if you wish an upgrade a Mrod trigger will be do able...parts and support are proven...

5.3 lbs... I am nott small and the Mrod .25 is fine for hunting for me...

But the Fort would be almost effortless to carry on multi day/week treks...

But....

Right now it is the Fartitude... a bunch of hot sulfurous gas that Crosman has been leaking to long... But if you can chance the new release date being the actual release date... I do bet it is going to be just as much of a workhorse as the .25 Mrod is....

Since you have the Urban .22 and like it you might really like a Gamo Yote .177...

https://www.pyramydair.com/product/gamo-coyote-se-pcp-air-rifle?m=4360#6915 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/gamo-coyote-se-pcp-air-rifle?m=4360#6915)

My Buc .177 is almost as heavy as the Mrod but is balanced so much better it feels very maneuverable...

299$ but will need a shroud for the 1/2 unf threaded barrel...

Hatsan Flash in either .22 or .25 maybe? They've been getting pretty good reviews from forum members so far and you can either grab a refurb when Hatsan USA has them for $189.99 plus $5 for delivery:

https://hatsanusa.com/collections/parts-and-refurb-buys/products/_refurbished-flashqe (https://hatsanusa.com/collections/parts-and-refurb-buys/products/_refurbished-flashqe)

Or new for another day at Field Supply for $259.71 and free delivery plus a free tin of pellets:

You said go for broke, Can't go wrong with a 97. Rekord triggers. They're all springers and no .25. I would not get .20, not enough ammo choices.

I'm a .177 guy and don't care for gas ram but PA has the Benjamin Titan GP gas ram .22 for $99.

Love my .177 Hatsan Dominator carbine springer. Good shooter out to 50 yards. You can get that with gas ram. I would get .22 instead of .25.

Something different is Hatsan's Proxima under lever repeater. I wish it came with a spring. Only gas ram I own. My .177 might get a spring later. Reminds me of the Dominator. Shoots about as good.

A RWS 34 in .22 would be a good choice for a springer.

Hey Trojan,
Any recommendation needs to be based on "what" you will use the gun for:

Example:  Hatsan rifles are blasters .... their main advantage is hunting.  If you want a target gun, don't get a Hatsan.  I've tuned many Hatsan rifles, they're simply not made as well as German rifles.

I've learned, I'm not a great fan of underlevers.  I prefer guns less than 8 lbs.

- I'm prejudice, but I'd recommend a HW50 or a HW95 in .177 or .20 caliber.  Out of all my guns, these
are the ones I like to shoot the most (target shooter only).

- The QB Chief in .22 caliber is a great shooter out to 100 yards..... and inexpensive.

Cabelas.com. still has the RWS 34P .177 for $149. You get the droop mount and a 4X scope. The $$ you save, put an ARH kit in it and you'll have a very sweet shooter......or you can get the wood stock 34 .22 for $230.

although I have killed many squirrels with 22 mrod, disco and maximus when I started using the 25 cal my kills seem to go up with the harder hitting 25 cal pellets...rabbits are easy to kill but those tough little squirrels are just that very tough for their size...step up to a 25 cal and enjoy more stopping power.
I wonder how much your 50 yard accuracy would improve with a 25 as opposed to the 22s?

I love my QB Chief in .177, the only reason i didnt get it in .22 was that I purchased the Urban during rollback at Walmart for the same price. Now if only Beeman could find a way to get a magazine for the Chief....

I am looking to hunt to with my airguns, which is why i have a lot of interest in the closeout/refurb Hatsans. But I know the guys across the pond get it done with 12 fpe on small game.

Hammerli 800 is made in China. Looks like a Ruger Black Hawk. The one with the moderator Looks reminds me of a RWS 34P Pro Compact

Thank you all for the suggestions. I went for broke & got the LGU .22. I preferred the location of the safety over the hk97 & i can reset it without having to cock the rifle again.
I will definitely keep an eye for all the rifles suggested for future purchases.
