Title: .25 Veteran seems to dislike lubed Jsb Kings
Post by: Tweeter on July 18, 2018, 07:09:35 PM
I had cleaned my barrel thoroughly and decided to shoot up the rest of the tin of Fp-10 lubed Jsb Kings that I had left over from my warp.  The previous owner was shooting lubed 33.95 Jsb's (not sure what he used for pellet lube I didn't ask) and reported stellar accuracy so I figured lubed pellets was the way to go.  However for some reason with the lubed 25.4's I was getting maybe 2 fliers per magazine at 50 yards that would land at least an inch from the main group.

I decided to clean my barrel again and open up a fresh tin of Jsb 25.4's and the Vet. seems to like them so far.  My barrel does need about 30-40 shots to "season" and after that I was getting super nice groups at 50 yards.  I've shot maybe half the tin with maybe only a few errant fliers.  Unlubed it is, fine by me!  One less step in the process ;)  This weekend I will shoot some groups and post pictures if anyone is interested.

Thought maybe other Veteran owners may find this interesting.  Of course your gun/barrel may like something completely different anyhow...

Most of my groups so far have been around .75" ctc at 50 yards.  My .22 Mutant was a little more accurate but maybe just because it was easier to shoot with less recoil?  Who knows but either way I am happy with the .25 and expect it will only get better.  Previous owner I guess only shot 200-300 pellets through it so it is basically a new gun.  Give it time to settle in! ;D

I've always cast a questioning eye on rifles that need lubed pellets.  HAve run across it, and do use lubed pellets when the barrel demands it....but always felt it was somthing I had to do to cover a flaw.

Will give you that some barrels do shoot better with lubed pellets, some shoot worse, and some don't seem to care one way or the other.

But thinking about it, when two PCPs are shooting the same pellets to about the same veloicty, yet one demands lube to shoot well....I wonder more about what's wrong with the barrel that needs lube than the one that doesn't.

So thinking about it...there is no real heat (not like a firearm) in action here.  If it were just pushing pellets fast enough to "strip", then wouldn't the fouling be heavier at the muzzle end (where the pellets are going fastest) than at the breech end (where they are moving the slowest)?

Only thing I can come up with is abrasion from a not quite as smooth barrel or that the barrel has a tight spot (and a too tight a choke counts as a tight spot, even though it's in the best possible location for a tight spot).

Jim, recommended using them in my warp but only to extend cleaning intervals and it helped for sure.  I do think the TJ barrels have a tighter than normal choke?  I didn't notice better accuracy when using lubed pellets in my warp just that I didn't have to clean as often.

Lube surely didn't make my Vet any more accurate either!  I guess I can't be 100% positive that that's what was causing fliers but so far it is the only thing I have changed and accuracy has improved.

Thanks Harpoon, yes SWFA's "sample list" is a beautiful place as well as their sales.  I payed retail for mine and don't regret it at all as I like to crank on the turrets from time to time and it has never failed me.  It has been on a lot of airguns so far.  The airguns come and go but always hang onto a good scope ;)

Yup, wrong handed. 8)

I was going to say that looks just like my Veteran, I have the 3-15 ffp SWFA, the same Atas bipod, but your cocking lever is missing! lol
You need to get some of Bizils mag holders, they are pretty sweet.

I've got some mag holders but just don't use them for shooting in the backyard ;)

The 25 gun uses LW barrels ....  JSB really don't need to be lubed generally ( Outside of TJ barrels with tight chokes )
So .... QUIT lubing the JSB's & solvent mop the barrel to remove what residual oil is there & you should be good to go

JSB's already have a fine wax type lube.

Never Seen a TJ's with a choke. None of mine have one. Is mike doing them?

very common on TJ's that are done by Marmot Milita for the M-rods

Ah! Learn something everyday.  Have only used TJ's for slugs. Not familiar with Mikes bbls in pellet applications. Or even why.
