Title: need opinions on a new air gun
Post by: too_pointer on July 14, 2018, 09:30:08 PM
I am brand new here, and was told this place would reach more people.  I only have an old Crossman pump up .177 air gun, and want one of the barrel break open ones. I still want a .177, and since I am left handed, need a stock that would work for me. I have seen the Gamo seems popular, and after looking at some, thought the Gamo Whisper Fusion Mach 1, would fit my needs. I want to keep my price under $300.  It comes with a scope, but realize the scopes that come with the guns are usually junk !! I do want a scope though, and might have to buy a different one.  I do want to be able to shoot it in my backyard, so it being not loud is important to me if possible. I will check this site all the time, so give me all your opinions, I will read them.  Of ya, I am 64, ( still young and good looking ) lol. Thank you all.
Mike

Can't suggest much to you in the way of break barrels, but wanted to ask how old your Crosman 760 is?

I've had a Crosman Fury Springer in the past, and the Ruger AirHawk( which is based on the Diana 34 I believe)
Each was $100 or less at the time. I miss the AirHawk.

And BTW,WELCOME!

Welcome to the forum :) The gamo breakbarrels have a following for sure. You'll find a lot of others who don't particularly care for them.  Definitely, shop around.  You might find somethimg you'd rather have, for your hard earned money.

matchstick, it has to be around 20 years or older. I don't know why I still have it, it is junk, still shoots, but never could shoot anything with it, open sights, need a scope now lol.

For a guy on a budget think real hard about the Xisco XS-25 at $120.  Throw in $100 for a full tune and you've got a very accurate economy gun.  http://flyingdragonairrifles.org/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51 (http://flyingdragonairrifles.org/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51)
You can get a scope there of another $60 or $70 and be ready to rock and roll.

I don't know what a full tune is ?

The tune is tearing the gun down, deburring the compression tube and reassembling with proper lubes and tighter fitting spring guide.  Basically correcting the poor quality assembly from the factory.  The tune reduces recoil, quiets the spring "twang", and makes the gun easier to shoot accurately.  If you get one of the Chinese made guns, a tune is almost mandatory.  The HW50 recommended to you earlier will probably not need this. The guys who like the Gamo guns that you asked about to begin with usually have to do the tune themselves.

Well, you might offer this up,people are always looking for vintage to restore! Take some pics, and get some opinions. You may come into some coin to help finance the break barrel! ;D
On the other hand you might restore it yourself(a learning experience)and make a great shooter out of it. You can buy a rifled replacement barrel for these.

The issue with break barrel guns that have silencers, is that it does little to quiet them.  Only a few models have a muzzle report that makes more noise than the piston hitting the front of the compression tube.  Most guns that do have a muzzle report like that are very powerful magnums in a smaller caliber.

A good mid-powet breakbarrel in .22 cal with a proper tune is going to be quiet and accurate.  The XS25M with a full tune will probably make less noise than a much weaker pumper in .177.

I agree with the others on your old rifle.  If you don't want your old pumper, put it in the classifieds and someone will likely snag it up fast.  Or, hang on to it, and read up on it.  You may regret letting it go.

You may have to learn hiw to shoot, all over again, with a breakbarrel rifle.  The gamo would be an okay rifle to start with, but it may very well leave you wanting for more in a short time.  You probably can get a lot more gun for the money.

The gamo rifles do offer a lot for their weight.  Gamo breakbarrel are probably the lightest rifles in their respective power level, nice easy gun to carry all day in the woods.  But the issue is, they sacrifice some build quality to give you that light weight gun.

For $300, you have a whole lot of options aside from Gamo.  Gamo is probably so popular and well known because they invest a lot in marketing.  Hence the commercials.

I personally dont have a problem with Gamo rifles.  I do have a problem with their marketing strategy.  The $100 gamo and the $300 gamo are often the exact same rifle, except for the design of stock and the muzzle "device" that actually does little to nothing to reduce the report.

For a gamo, I think a nice big cat in .22 is about as good as they get.  That's $150 with a 3-9x40 AO scope.  AO is important for airguns due to the short range we shoot.

Said this in your other thread and will again here and it echos what Roadworthy said above:

One not many think of but an XS25 in either .177 or .22 from Mike at Flying Dragon Air Rifles. $230 fully tuned and delivered to your door and the $70 left of your $300 budget will get you a Hammers 3-9x40 AO scope from Amazon that includes a one piece scope mount.

It's comparable to the Diana 34 and with Mike's full tune and trigger upgrade, you'd get a real nice 2 stage adjustable trigger and a rifle you wouldn't have to do anything to but mount a scope, sight in and enjoy shooting. I have one in .22 and it's accurate, quiet, not pellet picky or hold sensitive and money well spent in my book.

The rifle:

I agree, the flying dragon xs25 with full tune is the sweetest shooter you will find inside of $300.  Get over the made in china bs, all american breakbarrels are assembled in america from chinese imported parts, and still many are not quite put togethee right.  Spanish guns are about the same quality as chinese.  The flying dragin gun with the full tune is carefully checked for any issues.  Any parts that are not up to spec dont go bsck in his tuned rifles.  Then they are deburred, honed/polished where needed, recrowned barrel or lapped crown... the guns are great.  I have a tuned xs28m from fdar and it is the sweetest shooting springer i have ever had.  The xs25 will be even sweeter.

I've been very happy for years with a variety of Crosman low price Nitro pistons.
