Title: FX Boss inaccuracy
Post by: Aldea6 on July 03, 2018, 06:11:19 AM
Hello,
Trying to join the 100 yards club ( with modesty ) , I've got a FX Boss .30 cal. Put a Hugget moderator at the end of the shroud and a Hawke 8-32X50 scope.
I tried the JSB 44,75gr , FX 46,30gr and Baracuda 46,30gr. None of these gives me the expected result.
The target is at 50 yards , my usual range. The problem is that 1or2or3 pellets in a row go through the same hole ; then the followings hit a bit low , a bit left or right , no more than 3/4 of a inch , but I was expected much better from this gun.

I can't explain the reason; maybe it needs more break-in (I'shot mo more than 100 pellets 'till now ) , barrel cleaning, pellets sorting , lubricating, resizing... . I shot outdoor , with no wind . Maybe the shooter himself is to blame , but at this range I put all the shots into a dime with my Cricket bullpup , Cricket  carbine , FX  wildcat and Vulcan , all in .25.

Maybe the .30 cal doesn't fit me :(.

If anybody could give me an advice.

By the way , did anybody  try a Edgun R5M in .30 . Just because I like bullpup  :D, even in .30.

Thanks

First thing is to eliminate the moderator. Try the gun first without any modifications.
Could it be clipping the pellets?

Yes , that's an idea . A moderator , in most case and even the pellet doesn't touch it , has an effect of the POI . I put a moderator on my cricket , making an adapter to screw it at the end of the shroud. Not an easy job because the end cap was epoxied to the shroud , not screwed. The first adapter was not perfectly in line with the bore , and the results were catastrophic. I built a second adapter more accurately , very tight fit , now the gun shoots very well.

I'm going to my shop to make some tests.Anyway this gun is quiet enough without moderator . Keep you in touch for the results.

Marko , your suggestion was great ; you got it: the gun shoots now much more accurately : five shots in a 1" diameter . The cost is...the noise , which increased quiet a lot . Now I have to check what the noise is at 150 meters , that's where my nearest neighbour is  :D . In fact , the noise coming from the impact with the paper target is the one which upset me the most , as I shoot from inside my shop with the door half closed. Moreover I've built a kind of absorbing wooden box , filled with sand bags to damper the impact….yes I'm very fussy about noise ;D

Maybe the shroud of the gun could be improved by drilling some very little hole near the breech; Ernest Rowe ( a great airgun tuner , plenty of videos on his site ) did that trick on some of his guns .

Another trick is to run a mower engine during the shooting session , to mask the noise .

Well , let's go back to shooting  ;D

It has be documented over a "Long Period of Time" the FX Smooth Twist Barrel "DOES NOT Like LUBE with Pellets, and is not a slug shooter.  Virtually EVER!  And is confirmed by FX themselves.

Perhaps the New "X" Barrels with be different, but not the smooth twist.  ;)

OOOhhhh , that's it . Yesterday I've cleaned and lubed the barrel ; moreover , I've lubed my pellets !!!!

So I was all wrong and wondered why the gun didn't shoot accurately  ::) .
Now, it's maybe a good idea to put a few patches through the barrel (smooth twist) to remove any trace of oil and wash the pellets in soapy water as well .

Thank you for this advice.

Never too late to learn!!

That was it : a good barrel cleaning /degreasing and dry JSB 44,75 gr pellets ; target at 53 yards , 9 shots,
the last one fired too quickly  :( .

Thanks ,  I forget to say that the moderator has been put on , just enlarged the baffles a bit to be sure the pellets don't touch.
I drilled two rows of 7 holes at the beginning of the shroud , underneath , about 1,5mm diameter ; then put a roll of fine metallic grid inside the shroud to decrease the blast of air passing through the holes.

Works fine . Now the gun is quieter….and accurate.

Try stuffing the target box with old clothes.  I shoot old socks and underwear in a cardboard box.  Only thing you hear is the pellet going through the cardboard.  Maybe it's all the latex in there.   :D
