Title: My 760 Variant 1; Before & After
Post by: unionrdr on May 29, 2018, 01:12:11 PM
Here's what my 760 Powermaster variant 1 looked like after I found it in The Closet of Lost Gold (2 videos on Youtube), and cleaned up;

  Built June 1970. Self cocking feature. Was still in good condition considering what that closet does to things?
  And what it looks like now;

  I restored it with a N.O.S. 761xl barrel from Mike Baker in Montana. And a mac1 seal/piston upgrade kit.

The 761xl barrel is a drop-in mod, full length and rifled. The seal/piston upgrade kit has improved materials, using 90 durometer seals on the piston and valve tip. I used Minwax oil stain #224, " special walnut" on the buttstock. I wanted to match the forestock color as closely as possible.

  Then a couple coats of Tru-Oil for seal-n-shine. I used B/C chemicals throuout, including rebluing everything, screws and all.

 I also used 3M emery paper to sand everything smooth. Including the barrel and pump tube. 400 grit to 2,500;

  After machining it out inside the receiver and drilling holes for the MOE picatinny rails, I assembled it with moly lube on the trigger parts and Pellgun Oil on the seals, hammer piston, bolt, etc. Attached the 2 1/2" picatinny rails.

  And using Hawke low rise scope mounts with the Simmons 4x32 scope to get it mounted as low as possible;

That is The gun I wanted as a kid but never got to have one. A friend had one and it was a blast to shoot.
Now I can no longer buy one because I don't want to change the memory of it, time tends to exaggerate how nice it was.

Thanks guys! I took my time and even redid a couple things along the way to make them right. And glassman, my dad was a Seabee in the Philippines in WWII, 111th special Battalion. Wish I had a patch or something to commemorate it?! But it was a labor of love, since I saved my newspaper money to buy it at Sears, Roebuck & Co when I was like 14. And the tiger stripes/opaline markings were natural watermarks in the original stock! The Special Walnut stain just brought them out like peek-a-boo painting on a car. They're more or less pronounced, depending on the angle of view. Really cool thing I only saw on one other rifle in a pic from the early 20th of a Crosman exec receiving a 101 or 102 with butt stock watermarks like those. So I guess it's pretty rare? Here's a bit older pic of my 760's where you can see the tiger stripes a bit better;
