Title: Black Bird
Post by: DonaAna1 on May 24, 2018, 09:26:16 AM
While settling in on a Starling yesterday, a Blackbird with very vivid red eyes came into focus. My attention was blown all to heck and I didn't take a shot at the starling. Didn't get a pick of the blackbird either. But a quick at the bird book and I was able to identify it. A Bronze Cowbird. The eyes are kind of creepy.

Cowbirds are not legal to shoot in NM.

Being a birder I had to check out that bird. Your right those are some wild looking eyes. Remind me of a young ospreys eyes until they turn yellow

There's a documentary called 'A murder of crows'.  'Murder' is the term given for a 'flock'  of crows. It's 90 minutes long, but very fascinating. Crows are the most intelligent birds and among the smartest animals on the planet. Definitely worth watching.

Wow, I 've had a few cowbirds in my yard, and they looked just like in the pics in the link, but they were more brownish than black, and I don't remember the eyes being that red.  It's probably only the males who most likely are the more black ones.

Crows are very intelligent birds,
peck the eggs of a friend's hen and the sweet fruit of the trees like mulberry and apricot.
When there is someone in the house the ravens disappear, but when there is nobody in the house, they come back.

In Italy it is forbidden to shoot him especially with airgun and also it is estimated that each crow destroys up to 70 nests of birds per year.
We have no way to defend ourselves.

Animalists say: put scarecrows, they are of little use, as written in the first line these animals are very intelligent

Ciao

You just have to get some pet eagles trained to get the crows LOL.
