Well the All night buffet and Lobotomy center has not had a customer in quite a while.... the PB pile is getting eaten by Birds that are out of season or non-pest species.... :(, have not seen a Rat, but had evidence of a Rat that chewed on my Good yellow 50 ft Extension cord, but that was in the Patio where I cannot shoot, too much stuff that could get damaged and no way to get a good shot, this Rat is smart, it will not get caught in the traps and the new bucket "walk the plank" trap has not worked either, it won't go to the feeder so I have to figure something out, if it's still around, Sounds like things are slow for everyone, except for Glem up there in the great white north west... looks like the Rat's think they are lemmings and giving you all the fun.....
I'm still waiting.......... they've gotta show up some time.

I think you're right Tom or the City of Oceanside has a Sanctuary City program for Rats and MS 13... :o..... Oceanside city line is about 100 yards to the north of me...... ;D
-
Kevin, just build a mini bait station with a base and back stop with pine (L-bracket)..should work..maybe! LOL..been slow here too.

Yep, Back gate is just over the hill and across the river, I had a friend that live near the back gate off North River rd and Vandegrift blvd, Lots of Rats over there both 2 and 4 legged varieties.......
-
I seem to remember there were bison and sheep in camp pendelton. Small world lol
-
I feel your pain Kevin. Last week I had one rat show up, but I don’t think he’s been back since.
All I have is the young possum showing up eating all the PB.
Bah

Yep, lots of animals on the base, I seen all sorts of critters when I use to go with my Mom to the big Commissary, way back when I was little, my Dad use to be a Refrigeration mechanic on base, he seen Cougar out near Camp Horno and Deer all over the base.

Maybe they know something we don't.......... :o, I don't think there are any extinct Volcano's anywhere near by that are becoming active, but there are lots of Faults and there was some minor activity a couple weeks ago...... Maybe it's Coyotes feeding on them or Snakes or even some south Asians??? :o ;D
-
Yeap, even though I bait almost every night, I have seen only one Rat in many months, and I'm pretty sure that one was old stock from last year, one I missed several times ..
I find it interesting that almost everyone is experiencing very low numbers of sightings from different parts of the country, wonder if there is some kind of Rat behaviour cycle that we know nothing about..
-
Octavio, that is a good analysis. The past couple of nights I have watched some activity, but, the two rattus I watched completely ignored the PB but, the very large one was bent on chasing the smaller one...don’t know if that was territorial behavior or mating behavior or booting a young adult from the nest.

I found a snake skin the other day under a big redwood branch. It’s next to what looks like an old gopher hole. But this is on the opposite side of the yard that the rats hang out. But if this is a Gopher snake it could be an explanation. Will have to ask the chickens if they’ve seen any snakes trying to steal their eggs. :o

Aha!
-
Aha!
Catta scara rattus away... They tastes like chicken I have been told?
I had a visitor (Rat) come by late last night at 2:30am, he got a pass last night. Tonight it will not be so lucky.
Kevin,
try some cheap bird seed next to the fence along the walls of the house and see if you get any takers.

My method of rat baiting is to mix sardines and rice..I would put the viand in a plastic bag with small perforations, so that they would smell it from a mile away, lol! I tie up the bag on a peg, or on anything that may hold purchase..Plastic bag rustles heavily and they have the tendency to tear it apart..When they do, Rick baby wakes up from the noise and readies his blowgun, or airgun whatever suits his mood, lol!

LOL Richard! That sounds like you are “chumming” for those rattus! :)...very smelly but, I am sure very effective! :)

Randall, rats are the most fun to hunt, sir! I had so many hunting spots when I was still in the Philippines. Their population, especially in the public markets is unbelievable! You could go on shooting the whole night and you would hardly decimate their numbers! It is hard to describe it, gents, but you see them even in broad daylight..People just leave alone, so they saunter like they own the place..I do not retrieve them at all..When I hunt for 3 straight nights I disappear for a long time thereafter..I mean, can you imagine the stink of a hundred dead rats Lol! Yes, I am so guilty of that.
-
Richard
if I used sardines & rice for bait, it would attract all of the coons, c-rats, cats and scare away the rats.
one rat came by last night around 12:30 am for it's last free meal.

Richard, I can’t imagine having a field day like that in the Philippines! Are those Norway/brown rats over there...or a different species? And, no, I can’t imagine the stench in such a tropical environment! LOL!
-
Question for the rat experts, I heard I think it was Squirrel Hunters Channel say rats don’t like change in their environment. That it takes them a little time to get comfortable with those changes. We have had a bunch of wind the last two nights. Plants moving and rustling around, things getting blown across the ground. Do rats have a problem with windy nights? Does this put them off?
-
Paulus, your analysis of rattus rattus behavior is spot on! They are very much creatures of habit. When one finds the peanut butter on my bait station they come back to it nightly at pretty much the same time within a few minutes. A guy who on his own trims the ivy in our neighborhood where most of the rattus rattus reside, they stop coming around for weeks at a time because of the disturbance.
-
Randall and gents, what Randall said is exactly true..Been hunting rats and mice since I was 12 yo and now I am half a century old, lol! They are indeed punctual creatures but if you disturb their environment they disappear for a long time..One thing funny about them is that would ignore pork, poultry, beef, and fish and would sometimes prefer veggies..I have observed them in the public markets where they would attack fruits and veggies with gusto..Some are so used to human presence they ignore you..Randall, yes, they are Norway rats but in my one of my properties there are lots of roof rats too! In my sister's farm I love hunting tree rats because they are so fast and crafty! To the thread starter, I hope you get visited by your fave vermin soon!
-
I'm still waiting Patiently, I did notice the neighbor mowed the weeds next to the wall, but the Rats normally use the wall for their super highway, all the PB I put out is getting eaten by a Towhee bird at first light every morning and it's getting fat..... :-\
-
Put some bait on the other fences are the house, they may have moved to another highway?
I have bait on all three fences bordering my backyard.

wish I had other fences, I live in a mobile Home Park, No fences, just a wall separating the park from the private homes, I put the feeder at the wall and back corner of my yard, only place I could put it and still have a shot from the covered Patio window. all other directions are unsafe and have no shooting access.
