Title: B19 nitro piston replacement/upgrade time?
Post by: SagaciousKJB on April 20, 2018, 07:04:20 PM
I have a B19 that has a canted gas ram.  I bought it out of a pawn shop so no idea how long it's been like that.  It's been my project gun, and it's shooting pretty sweet now, but I want to put a CDT drop-in trigger eventually.  I just noticed that Crosman is coming out with a new nitro piston design, and I'm wondering if I should replace the nitro piston (or just buy the spare and shoot this one until it breaks ) that's in this one before the parts become unavailable, and if I should expect the price to have become more or less.

Also curious, I think I've heard before it's not possible, if I might be able to fit a NP2 in there instead.

I believe the NP2 piston is too large in diameter to fit into the NP compression tube.  If the existing piston still works well, keep shooting it.  If it fails you'll know it.  THAT is the time to order a replacement.

The GRT III makes a fantastic difference in the way a gun shoots.  In the course of playing around I ordered and installed an NP2 trigger assembly into my Nitro Venom.  After a bit of work I preferred it to the GRT III.

I have the CBT NP2 trigger in a Crosman Summit Ranger NP 2 Rifle.  I have the standard Crosman trigger in a Crosman Vantage NP that is about 5 or 6 years old.      I have CDT GRTIII Trigger in a Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100.   I have a new Crosman RedTail with a standard NP Gas Piston and Standard Trigger.     The worst was the Vantage.  I bought that one, right after Crosman introduced it.  I did the Screw Mod to Improve it.  The New RedTail Is a lot better and they must have made improvements.   Of all of them I like the Clean Break Trigger in the Summit Ranger the best.    The RedTail is #3. and the CDT GRTIII In the Benjamin Trail NP XL is #2       I hope this is of some help to you.  I replied because I had All 3.           Best Wishes - Tom

Oh that sounds interesting, I didn't realize the NP2 had a different trigger assembly as well?

Here's my  chronograph numbers today with some 7.4 gr Crosman Pointed Field Hunting

Over 29 shots...

High: 928
Low: 899
Average: 917
Spread: 29
Standard dev: 7

So it seems like it's doing its job still despite being canted. I just worry about a sudden failure leaving me without a good air rifle or the prices/availability of them changing, so wondering if I should get one now while the getting is good?

Also, it's been one sweet shooter with those brass washers you helped me with.  I figured out the barrel was canted last season, so once I took the cant out, I got way better with it.  Took out the return spring to lighten the trigger a little and just got even better.  Pretty sure with a cleaner trigger and more magnification I'll be getting my first dime-sized groups with this gun.

Hey that's a big help actually!  I didn't even realize there were so many different triggers to choose from for this.  Was just going to get the CDT one and call it done.

I did the screw mod on this one too and found it a lot better, but still not great.  I want something with a much shorter break to help cope with scope wobble.
