Hey all,
I have been shooting a lot more 10 M bench rest lately and have been thinking of trying to find an older SPP to scope and shoot inside.
So I put it to whoever thinks they'd like to assist my addiction (that seems to be leaning toward old wood and metal now).
Any suggestions on makes or models that may be worthy of attention? I am sick of multi pumping for paper shooting and am not good enough with springers to really hone in on the x's.
Edit Newer is Ok too .. I just passed on a ebay Daisy Avaiti 853 that went for $155 or so because the stock was stamped for JROTC... kinda kicking my self for that but who knows how high it would have gone..
Thx.

Take a look at the Daisy 853 here. Exactly what you are wanting.

Wow, I may just try to find a few fellow airgunners at my sportsman's club to see if we can get the club to support us to get that pricing. 120 bucks resealed by the factory including shipping. heck yeah!!!!
Thanks Ken 8)

Any individual can get an 853 from CMP for the $105 S&H $14.95 per rifle, you do not need to be in a club like their other guns...
Now... what about the Feinwerkbau FWB 600/602 variants that are on Gun Broker right now?
Hey, remember... you asked! ;)

Yes, I am watching myself.
Probably be paying a lot more for the subsequent divorce though...

I have an 853 with a small cheap scope and it is so accurate it’s silly. Trigger is ruff but that’s an easy fix.
Knowing you like American wood and steel what about co2? Old Crosman 180 or 160 with some scope groves or mounts and good to go. My 180 is super accurate and loves the cheap pellets.

I may very well end up calling on the 853. Thanks for the heads up on single units being available. As For the FWKB ...yes a divorse would be next LOL. it's now at a little over $700 ..and "reserve not met". Yikes. I hate when people start a bidding price so much lower than their reserve. Whats up with that. I just get a taste of snake oil salesman when guys do that. I know in my brain it gives people time to mull it over and generates more responces (I am in remodeling services sales professionally). But in my gut it's just like if I were to lowball on advertising in my business. Maybe some day on the gun, it's a beauty! I'll just add it o the list stapled to my lottery ticket in my brain, but not from that guy...and not till that weeks ticket hits big.

Hey CJ, Yep I was on the fence on a CO2 shooter. But fell to MPP. Just trying to break free from tanks and tubes. All the bulk CO2 here is devoted to keeping the half barrel in the old pot belly fridge pouring cold frothy amber. And I am going through too many lil guys with just a pistol using them.
But that's what I was thinking. "OLD AMERICAN" that is... Like isn't there other vintage single pump pneumatic guns? Was there an issue with the mechanics back in the day or something? Like they couldn't get the power high enough. Maybe they just wanted to sell a ton of little CO2 cartridges...
There is also that brand association thing with Daisy. In general I am just not a fan due to all the garbage they ship out...How is it they are the only makers of a decent older SPP? And now you mention the trigger issue on yours...on a target gun!?!?!?
Isn't there a semi available vintage option to contend with them?
-
Don’t get me wrong, the 853 trigger isn’t bad it is just heavy. The rifle was made to get kids into target shooting and this does it safely. Do a a search and you will find a list of parts to order from Daisy to make it nice and light.
I didn’t get mine from the cmp. I found it locally on Craig’s List. Just order one f ok the cmp. You won’t be disappointed.

Not much there in vintage US ssp’s. But, you might look at some small, weak, but accurate springers (one easy pump). The Marksman biathlon trainer (model 1790) might be a good fit.
-
You said that you were tired of the pumpers for target practice. How many pumps are you using ? I only use 3 pumps for target shooting & plinking.

Plus one on Steve's last post. I have a 392, it is about 3 year's old. It now sports a Lyman # 17 front aperture sight and a Williams rear aperture sight. It shoots 10 meters well it 3 pumps, this combination works well with CPHP's.
The front peep is held on with hand formed epoxy putty.

Hmmm. I had not thought of that. It does make sense a weaker one wouldn't be near as picky as the ones i have tried. But how to get enough range time to lay out the the purchase dollars with confidence is an issue on this end. But you did plant a seed where if I ever see one being used I will ask to try and shoot a few groups
For a purchase before that though, It's gonna have to be SS.

Yep, My XS-B510 was that guy til recently. I went to shoot it outside at longer ranges. Gave it a full charge and blew it out. It was never the target quality gun I really wanted for so long so it going down is what prompted this whole excuse for a new toy. But it was pretty amazing with the stock sights till my eyes took a turn for the worse in the last few years. The other 2 pumpers in the harem are both .22 sighted for longer outdoor use. So I figured i would use this a an excuse to try a new .177 with a different power plant set up.
But thx for looking out side the box on my behalf.
It's starting to sound like there just isn't that old SSP I was hoping would be the gun I never knew about...My recently acquired 312 really made me appreciate the character of old wood and metal craftsmanship.

Without sounding like an Airgun snob, because I too would like to have a Daisy 853 from CMP.
I do not know your budget but from your list in your sig line.... I believe you could swing a used FWB 300S club gun.
They were made by the 1000's for shooting clubs like the Boy Scouts and 4-H. Even imported by Daisy for a while.
I got mine from the knowledgeable Joe Rhea. I requested one that he had rebuilt and re-blued, but to save money I requested the wood was untouched. While that made it show it's age, I shot it that way the first season. It is amazingly accurate. Then this winter I sanded it and refinished it.
I realize you asked about a SSP, and it is a springer, but you would never know it by shooting it. Literally no recoil and it is a side lever, not a break barrel.
If you want a vintage, wood and steel, 10M gun, I doubt you could find much better for the price.

Their recoil system is a bit amazing I have one of their pistols from the same era. Were the class of competition shoot for years.

That's a nice looker Scott, nice job on the wood, Do you mind if I ask the price range of those before they are fully restored?

You guys are pure evil. Kidding!
That's a really different oldie. And now there is another wish list AG for the lottery winnings. I did some research on this based on you mentioning it was unique.
Too cool...rail riding isolation, two reverse coiled springs for the torque, a piston ring system instead of a typical rubber seal. I have to at least shoot one some day. Soooo cool for a throwback.
Always learning, Thanks a ton on this one...I am only a desk top tech. No shop space here but I love this sh**
I need to call my 12 step AG addiction sponsor....

Thanks POI, but that was before I refinished it, as delivered!
I will try to remember to post some "finished" pics when I am home tonight, don't have any photos of her here at work.
Your best bet would be contact Joe Rhea. He is a member here (JoeRhea).
Also has a youtube channel on his FWB 300S builds and other target guns.
With mine being gone through, resealed and reblued it was $500.
Joe has a nack for finding old club guns in quantity and rebuilding them.
While I was dealing with him he had 5 and was purchasing 7 more.

Found some pics of it here on GTA that I had posted in the "lets see those Fraulein's !!!" thread...

Very nice. Shooting one of these has gotten a high ranking on my AG bucket list.

For some reason I thought we were limited to US made rifles. But if the euro stuff is in the mix, and springers are potentially ok, the FWB's as mentioned are hard to beat.

Yeah that was where I started my thinking, even it wasn't said about a US gun... but the twists and turns of this affliction are hard to predict (addiction is a disese after all :o ).... well, it's gone where it will. That 300S just seems so cool... IDK now...

Talking with some ol' 10M shooter at my Local range this came up. I may have a local one under a guys bed that could go on the block for sale... It was treated as a personal gun and didn't go through the antiquing that a club gun typically gets. He is meeting me Sat with it and an old Anschutz to look at too. But he thinks they both need work after so long. Looking forward to checking them out.

I ahve a D835 ssp. MY issue with it is its smallish for me. better stock (read that: adult sized) would be the snitz for it.
I have a diana 75 spring gun, starte of the olympic art in 1967. one hole accurate, but the "recoilless" setup makes it heavy. Its a delight to shoot though, and easy to cock. But If i had to offer ONE gun for what the OP asked, itd be the Anschutz SuperAirre 2002 SSP..... slightly lighter than the D75, slighter harder to cock and as accurate even with me shooting it. I use it in 10 meter postal comps in the winter, and slap a 12x scope on it for FT work at basic break barrel matches. the annie is better ergonomicaly then the D75 as it has som e adjustments you cna use to make it fit you better....
