Hello all,

I'm new here, but am no stranger to airguns. I picked up a Hawthorne M140 (.22) at an estate sale recently. I believe it is a 4th variant with die-cast trigger group and no spoon/bolt on the breech cover.  I'd post pics, but I don't have enough posts yet. Hopefully this thread will remedy that  :D

I've already taken it down. Most of the seals were hard and brittle. The new seal kit just showed up today. We'll see if the pump piston needs attention; it looks pretty good. It's got a brass valve that is in good shape, but the breech bolt cover and breech bolt are slightly damaged. The screw that connects them is also missing. The stock has some decent dings and wear, but has nice grain. 

I watched some videos on rebuilding the 140 and I used a different method to remove the bolt that holds the valve and stock: The larger diameter section fits into a bicycle axle vise, allowing for easy and mar-free removal and re-installation. The specific one I used was the Park Tool AV-1. It would be easy enough to make a similar device out of some aluminum stock/scrap, but I had this.

I just wrapped the bolt in some 1/8" thick hard rubber and grabbed it with a vice-grips, came off easy and no marring.

One of the springs was somewhat rusty, so perhaps I'll end up replacing them, too. That seller doesn't list any of the damaged/missing parts on my rifle, but I've got a decent plan to repair or re-make them as needed. More fun than just ordering a new part anyway!

I just use a collet to remove the stud but using two nuts will work or on this one I restored I cleaned the original one up and milled two flats on so an adjustable could be used

cheers it came out well -I took the parts int o be blacked but I'm just in the process of setting up tanks so I can do it myself
