I am a returning member.I lived overseas for several years.I had a Crossman 1377 over there, but decided to leave it rather than have them freak out when they saw it in my luggage.
I'm ready for a decent vermin rifle.I was going to get another Crossman, but was going to get a 1322,till I saw this Hatsan on the internet. The Edge is offered in both .22 and ,25 for $120 shipped, and comes with an entry level scope.
I'm thinking for the difference in price, the Hatsan .22 might fill my needs well.
It's a break barrel pump..right? How many "pumps" does it take to reach full power do you guys suppose?Could I reduce the power by simply reducing the number of pumps?I ask that because we also have a real problem with deer in the garden.I'm not necessarily interested in breaking their skin, but enough to make it uncomfortable and a deterrent.
Advice...suggestions...comments?
Thanks.

Fred...that gun is too powerful to be shooting at deer with. You cock the rifle by breaking the barrel. ONE TIME and pulling it down then back up. This gun does not do multiple pumps. Only ONE Power Setting and it is too powerful to scare deer with. This gun would do them some real damage because the pellet would penetrate into muscle tissue. The Edge is Good Gun but not for that. Best Wishes - Tom

What Tom said^
A Striker is a spring piston rifle, not a "pumper." There is no varying the power level on one of these. Cock it once, shoot full power every time. If you look around the site, you will easily see the difference between spring piston and multi-pump pneumatic guns. For what you're looking to do (shooting deer without injuring them), a spring piston rifle like the Striker is (definitely) not the answer!
Now if you actually want to kill what you shoot at, and what you plan to shoot is in the small game sized vermin range (chipmunk up to raccoon sized critters), a Striker may do the job, if you get a "good one." From my experience, I'd likely stay away from .25 (unless buying used from a reputable seller who claims it is accurate), and keep to .22, as these guns a plenty powerful enough for small game sized critters. That said, there is something very endearing to shooting the biggest small bore (.25) out of a spring gun. Best of luck.

May I suggest a Crosman 2100 Legacy, as a good multi pump air rifle. if you want .22 cal then a 1322 from the custom shop, or a Benjamin 392.

I own both the .22 and .25 calibers with Vortex gas rams in them and an Edge .25 caliber springer and all are great for small pests like squirrels and such. My .22 with H&N FTT's is a 755 fps, 18.5 fpe rifle so plenty of power for them. As has already been mentioned, they aren't multi pump rifles..you cock the barrel one time, load your pellet and close the barrel.
As far as the entry level scope, reviews vary but most say they don't hold up past the first 500 shots so consider a better quality air gun rated scope and you'll find plenty of recommendations for good ones depending on how much you want to spend.
The above being said, they are not rifles I would use for scaring away deer. They all have more power than needed for something like that and the pellets would penetrate skin. We get them in the yard even living in town and they're scared away easily enough just by banging on the window but I'd never use any of my break barrels to do that.

twood...mentolio..Back_Roads and Steve;
Thank you guys so much for setting me straight.I know springers are different from pumps, but didn't understand that this model Hatsan was a springer.I was ready to buy one,but now I may have to take a step back,as I wanted a rifle I could use to startle the deer as well as shoot vermin.I might be well advised to just buy another 1322.At least with one of those I can adjust power for what I want to use it for.The downside is the incessant pumping..That does get old I must admit..and finger pinching when pumping is a negative as well.
Back to the drawing board. ;) (ftp://;))
I'm always open to alternatives tho,so if you have an idea for an inexpensive option,I'm all ears.
Thanks again for the help.

Ted, Welcome back! It should be pointed out that shooting at deer is harassing wildlife and is illegal in most states. If the deer are that big a problem do the right thing, put up an electric fence. That way you can avoid unwanted entanglements with the law! Good luck in choosing a gun.

Hey Tom:
Thanks for the links to that air rifle.I ordered one..we'll see how it works out...sure won't break the bank if it doesn't measure up.
Rick:
Thanks for the heads up on harassing wildlife,I had NO idea there was such a thing.Imagine the trouble I must be in for the ants I eradicate on a regular basis.I fully expect someone from fish and game to arrive on my doorstep with a mandatory pair of vibram soles that need to be worn."Give an ant a chance" and all that. ;D I'm just kidding there.I don't know what to do,the deer walk around with impunity. There was just a group of 4 last year...now it is 8.We have only been here less than a full year.I can only imagine how many there will be in 2 or 3 years if nothing is done.
The electric fence is something I am already investigating. The wife is my major hurdle,as she thinks I am going to forget where it is and shock myself..not to mention the grandkids when they come to visit Grumpa. ;) But you know,I learned about electric fences from my Grandfathers farm, and I survived it.LOL

Ted, Just have the video recorder ready when the grand kids come over and tell your wife you`re going to make it big on Youtube. I learned about electric fences the same way. It builds character, just look how I turned out!

I could do that, but I'd be applying it continually as we are on the coast and it rains pretty regularly.
I already thought about a dog,but then you have to provide care when you away from home.A neighbor lady had her small dog kicked by a deer when he chased it,and ended up having to have a leg amputated.Hate to see that happen ya know?
I could buy a freezer too,but I'd need at least 2 of them.LOL

Have you considered a sling shot for scaring away deer. Might sting enough so they don't come back but nothing much beyond that.
