Title: Picked up a p17. Very impressed
Post by: thedude on March 15, 2018, 05:11:20 PM
So while I'm waiting for my gauntlet (again) I saw this Beeman p17 on Amazon for $30.

I did some research on it and right when it got here I remove the automatic safety, and replaced all of the grease with a better quality lube, and tightened the trigger all the way down so it's just one stage now.

It really is as accurate as everyone says with the open sights.

But I had to one-up it and threw a scope on there. Loaded some Daisy hollow points, the cheapest pellets I can find, and it's doing about 1.25 in groups at 10yd.  It's been years since I fired a pistol so I'm sure with a couple weeks practice I could get that into quarters maybe even nickels.

Yes very accurate. I have two. One shoots 7gr at 400fps, another at 380fps. Both lower than the reviews on web. Hopefully yours doing better

Put a holographic red dot on it and never look back.

Also.. cut a hunk of bicycle inner tube and stretch it over the grip.

Best pistol for that money
Guys, you are so lucky to have them in the usa at that price.

If the energy is low you can increase it by putting something into the chamber to increase the pressure. I used old rubber o ring removed from hw 40  piston and I placed at the bottom of the cylinder. Another smaller o ring placed on the top of the piston and energy jumped from 3 to 3.5 joules. Thats sweet spot for mine.
I have tried to increase more, but closing the pistol got very difficult, so 3.5 J is perfect.

Its aslo good to replace o ring which seals the barrel, thicker helps to get 3-4 m/s extra

How did you attach it to the piston? I'm having trouble imagining it. I'm also assuming that the outer diameter matched the inner diameter of the oring you placed in the bottom of the cylinder?

Same question, how did you do it? I would like to get to 410-420fps range for both pistols.

"I'm also assuming that the outer diameter matched the inner diameter of the oring you placed in the bottom of the cylinder?"

yes, because its old oring removed from hw 40 piston, so it fits the cylinder perfectly, a little bit of silicon oil and stays at the bottom of the chamber.

Another o ring on the piston was kept by a little bit moly paste. Not the best solution, but I did it only for the experimental purpose, to see how much energy will increase. I have a honey looking type moly paste, it has consistency of glue and kept the oring easily for more than 500 shots.

I got inspired by one of YT videos. Dude used super glue and placed a small coin on the top of the piston. Coin must be very thin, because pistol might not lock. Also if the pressure inside will be to high it will be very difficult to close it, or it might even break.
Ive managed to get 3.7 joules but it was hard to cock, 3.5J is perfect on mine.
Every pistol is different so I cant guaranteed the same amount of power increase.

Good luck

They are neat little pistols.  Excellent for close range plinking and very accurate.  I did something similar to the piston on one of mine after reading a bit about it quite a while back but I simply used Gorilla tape-the black type.  I think I got 4 layers with the 5th getting hard to close (or maybe it was 5 and 6) so the last layer was removed.  I was planning to measure the thickness and then make a permanent part to attach to the piston top.  I did notice a slight gain in velocity but it wasn't enough to get excited about and I did not follow up on the work.

Thank you very much for the pics and reply. That cleared things up. Definitely a "have to try" the next time I take mine apart.

Good shooting, Larry!

With a red dot reflex, a little trigger work, a rest and some practice, consistently getting .25" 5-shot groupings at 10yds with mine!   ;)
