Title: What happed to the Modify Button?
Post by: Rat Sniper (AKA: PaulT58) on February 23, 2018, 10:49:43 AM
Hey Liz,

I've been traveling a few days and am just now getting caught up on my reading.  I posted a reply to a thread this morning and noticed the Modify Button was no longer available next to the Quote button.  Is this a site wide change, or is my computer just messing with me this morning?  Thanks...

The button was removed a few months back. It is now only available for 30 mins after you post.

Okay, here's the scoop.
A while back we had some jerks that decided to leave GTA and in doing so they decided to make holes in every post or thread they were involved in. So they deleted their entire history of posts.
Let me refresh folks memory a bit. This is a public forum. Once you post in a public forum, the information is now PUBLIC. Not proprietary unless stated as a copywrite or trademark. It is now public information.
Anyway, when this happened, we took away the permission to alter posts to prevent it from happening again. This is for the protection of the content of our public forum!!!!!
Now, the photobucket deal threw a wrench into this. We had to once again open up to allow folks to edit photo links to fix them. And I posted a warning then that if this happens again the permission to edit would be shut off.
Well, now that has bitten us in the butt once again. Another bad apple has snuck in and deleted many posts or content of posts. So once again I have removed the ability for folks to edit.
And this time it stays that way. I'm not risking this again.

Well, at least it’s not my computer messing with me!  Sorry to hear this had to happen. I have used the modify button, as late as the beginning of this week. But, I normally use it to add more detail to a previous post, add a picture that better illustrates what I was trying to convey, or clarify a confusing comment that may have drawn some comments or requests go an better explanation. I guess this will need to be done in a new post now.

Again, this is such a great community, it’s too bad a few bad apples spoil the bunch!  I hope we can at least get back to a point where we will still be able to edit a post for up to a few minutes after it’s posted, just in case other old timers like me have a senior moment and click post, then remember what else we meant to say!!!   :D

Being on other forums, I have always felt that the indefinite option to modify is/was "odd". If the new rules allow for modifications, for a short period of time, the I feel it is fair.

Yeah, this is really too bad. We are a member owned and managed forum. We pride ourselves in being open, honest and packed full of the best information (and people) in the airgun community. We SHOULD be open and free to do whatever we need to with what we post. And let's face it, information DOES change and needs to be altered accordingly. But....you can see the dark side of allowing the modify option to be available. Somebody will undoubtedly abuse the privilege.
We used to have 2 weeks paid sick time here. Someone abused it and called in sick and (believe it or not) went fishing in the company OWNERS private lake. LOL
Guess what...they were caught and ever since then, all employees get 3 whole days a year of paid sick time.

Yeah "The Change" is not good for someone who often changes tenses (past, present or future), while writing the same paragraph or post.
A quick edit ties my scattered ideas back together ;).

However, I guess "the change" is the lessor of two evils ::) :D :P.  What else can you do ;D.

It looks like we are back to typing longer posts in the "TextEdit" program and doing the changes there.  Then, when the final edition is posted here, it will not need to be etided detided edited.   ;D

These BAD MEMBERS become known for some time ... get warnings, continue trolling until booted.
Frankly the tolerance to these few is part of the issue IMO.

Yeah Scott, and then we have you. LOL
Just messing with ya.
Well, I am a believer in giving everyone every possible chance in the book. Yep, some push us beyond reasonable. But GTA will not be know as a ban happy forum. And will NEVER do as other sites and ban immediately and without warning. I really HATE having to ban anyone. And hope the other staff and members feel the same. But sometimes we are left with no choice. But lesson is learned and a couple of trials have been run. They failed. Modify tab after 30 minutes is history....

I guess folks are really going to have to double proof read their posts before posting. Me included!
It wouldn't hurt if some would actually use spell check too. You know that little red squiggly line that sometimes appears under a word? Right mouse click on the word & the computer will give the proper spelling 99% of the time. Very easy.   ;)

I can see why infinite modify time is not a good thing
but 30 minutes is too short a time frame.

I don't see why a post can't be left open for up to a week
before it gets locked. Most sites operate in this manner.

The problem was leaving all posts open that resulted
in this situation.

Images don't show until you commit to post.

If you don't like the layout or selected the wrong images, now you are out of luck.

Allowing editing for a short time would seem reasonable, if possible.

I don't always see my errors right away, and often have to edit.  Something to do with ageing eyes apparently...

Yep anyway a few minutes to change things also can leave the forum a much nicer place, lol because it can give people a chance to self moderate - cool off and realize what they said was inappropriate and erase it with an apology before it ends up insulting the other guy for perpetuity 😊. We all sometimes say things we regret or unintentionally use words that can be taken in a way we didn't intend. Having a chance to fix that is in the moderators best interest imo 🙂

LOL.... it don't bother me that the modify button is gone.... you guys are the ones that gotta read my mistakes.
Case in point....
I hit post on a reply yesterday only to discover I was completely in the wrong gate. Oh well, a card laid is a card played.
It is a shame that there are people out there that ignore the spirit of this forum. That says a lot about a person right there. I guess some people get called an idiot so much that they become immune to it.

I sure did use and enjoy the modify button.
I used it mostly in the first 30 minutes.  Quoting myself will work.  Thanks for that tip.
It was also helpful to be able to change a price in the subject if the price changed later.
Example: Subject:  Gamo Urban $220 at Walmart.  Lowered to $209.99.  Amazon has lowered to $172.
NOTE:  That is just an example.  Urban price watchers, don't get excited!

I relied heavily on the "modify" button to correct mistakes, layout, and readability, or even add additional detail.  A couple of hours would generally be enough time, but prefer 24 hours.  Maybe have a request button, to change anything after the "timeout".

Dave,

Even a 5 minute grace period would be really helpful.  I usually double check my posts before hitting the submit button and STILL almost always find mistakes that I want to fix, or something that I want to re-word.  I fully admit that I am more error-prone than most people though.

Thanks!

Even after I re-read and make corrections, it seems the auto correct still thinks it knows what I mean to say, even if it doesn't!  That few minutes to modify has been a blessing in the past!

Example:  In a recent post autocorrect changed "Haj" (as in Hajimoto) to "Has" and even after I changed it, autocorrect changed it again!  So, Hajimoto, if you see this and wondered why I butchered your name in the other post, now you know!   ;D

I agree with the crowd on the need for a time limited modify button. Even with a thorough review, I still find mistakes after posting.
I was schooled before the internet and Google decided my education was irrelevant. Some of us remember the days when grammar, spelling, and punctuation mattered.
Title: Re: What happed to the Modify Button?
Post by: avator on February 25, 2018, 03:48:30 PM
I didn't even think about folks with auto correct... that must be maddening. A typo can change the entire meaning of a post. And sometimes even make it offensive. Not having it would definitely make me pay more attention but I could make due if it's what needs to be.

That's a good reminder that we HAVE a spell checker. Just below and to the right of the text box. Use it before you hit Post?
:)
Okay, I have set the edit function for 2 weeks. Then the post is locked. What I'm not sure of is if this will allow for editing OLD posts, but I don't think it will. I believe and hope this will affect posts made from this point onward. Let me know how it works.

In the U.S. we spell it favorite and in England and Canada they spell it favourite. The spell check says "favorite" is wrong but when I do a search wiki even has the definition of it.

Oh good grief, I thought I was losing my mind or just in a getting over the evil Flu stupor.

I often make an initial post. Save it, then come back and add images and video, as well as fix egregious spelling and grammatical errors. Part of the issue for me is that there’s an iOS bug with SMF that if an image upload fails because it’s too big, you can’t resubmit the form, and you can lose all your content you’ve just labored over.

All of this being said I hate the twits who get riled and come back and delete posts. There was an awesome thread of how one accomplished stock builder went about building a stock. It was so good, then one day, poof!

I'm with Geoff on this. If 30 minutes isn't enough time to make whatever edit you wanted, then just add a new reply to the thread later, problem solved. I have always freely admitted I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but I've added plenty of stuff to my own threads later, so it's not hard to do. Too much good info has disappeared from GTA because of disgruntled now ex members and various other reasons.

I'll take flak for this more than likely but 2 weeks to edit a post is crazy and no one complained when it WAS only 30 minutes and now are....go figure...lol
Title: Re: What happed to the Modify Button?

We have the classifieds set to 30 minute edit window. Regular forum was wide open. No time limit. It was that way from the beginning. But when we had butthead now former members that decided to harm the forum as they were departing, I decided to remove the edit function totally. This was to protect the forum and the information folks posted as PUBLIC information. Because mainly the photobucket fiasco, I opened up editing once again. And once again, a butthead trashed several threads by deleting content as they exited. That is not happening again!!!!!!!!
Hence, the debate and requests for allowing for editing of posts. I understand the need. Believe me. But I also understand we have GOT to preserve our forum information. And that, to me, is more important.
Some have said 15 minutes and some have said 2 weeks. And others have stated all kinds of time in between and have valid reasons for it. Okay, one week. MY first thought was 48 hours. I like that round number. I may reset it to that. I'm doing the best I can to satisfy everyone. But I'm learning that is a losing battle. So I have to compromise and do what I feel is fair and gets the job done that the forum needs.

Thank you DEz!  Two weeks is very generous, but I just checked and the modify button is not just for the current post unfortunately.  However, I do believe that in two weeks the old posts (two weeks old and older) will lose the modify capabilities and only the newer post (two weeks and newer) going forward will only have the modify option.  At least that is my guess as to what will happen.  So if this is true, everyone needs to behave for two weeks on the older post and this new two week option will be good going forward.

I usually need to edit right away, let alone an hour later.

Dez, if I may make a suggestion to what a previous forum did that I was a member of... Maybe it's easier.
You could edit your post until someone replied.

Once the next reply came in, you were locked in to your statement. That way you could not change it after someone went with forward with the thought of what you said.

I had been reading this thread since post #2, and have thought that same thing.
My post was just offing an idea that worked elsewhere... for IF he wants to do something.

Thanks once again Dave..... I'm sure we'll manage. Anything needing added or corrected after the modify goes away can be done with an additional post containing a 'quote' of the original. It shouldn't be a show stopper.
