Title: Np xl barrel lock up play
Post by: Nate the airgunner on February 07, 2018, 09:16:32 PM
Shooting the np xl yesterday and noticed every so often a pellet would hit 4 inches low directly below the others. So I shook the barrel and noticed a very small amount of up and down play. Which can of course, should be no play at all. Cracked the barrel open and notice the wedge below the breech I could move up and down with my finger, is there any way I can fix this, or should I just order a new barrel for it.

You can try ordering a new alive jam and spring.  That would be the least expensive fix.

I read of one member who actually had a properly fitted alive jam machined.

If you order a new barrel I do not believe you get an alive jam.  You'd need a few other pieces.  I believe you'd need to order a pin to retain the cocking linkage as well as I think you destroy the old one when you remove the cocking linkage.

Does the jam tend to wear at the breech block or the wedge itself?

I don't know that your problem was caused by wear.  I feel it was more likely poor tolerance in the first place.  The tolerance problem would be between the breech block and the alive jam.  The wedge part is under spring pressure and will fit firmly on the cross piece under spring tension.

Replacement of the alive jam is not particularly difficult.  Remove the barrel from the gun then apply pressure to the alive jam by pressing firmly against a solid surface.  This will compress the spring behind it a bit allowing the pivot sleeve to be removed.  With the sleeve removed releasing the pressure will allow the alive jam and spring to be removed.

I'll have to see if I can get one from crosman then. Hopefully Its a tad over size and I can work it down.
