I'm hoping someone can help me understand something here. I'm selling a Beeman Tempest that I put in the American airguns classifieds . I would have listed it here but only recently got back into airgun s and i can't list in the classifieds for 30 days....I think?
Anyways, I get a text like 2 minutes after the ad went up and the seller asks what form of payment i accept. I said USPS money order, because my current internet device is a tablet that PayPal doesn't like it's browser (Amazon fire tablet). The buyer then says "sorry I only do Paypal. So I offered to ship the gun on the basis that the buyer could reassure me they were honest and then accept money order payment from the buyer UPON their receipt of the merchandise. That's where the exchange ended. I think this just seems odd. Any input?
-
Well, it does seem odd, but it appears to me that it's just a personal issue with the individual who sent you the pm.
I don't expect anyone here can give you much input, unless I am missing what your query was about. PayPal IS much easier, if you're the buyer, because it doesn't require a trip to buy the money order, then putting it in the mail. It's possible that he just didn't want to go to the extra trouble.
I have personally done both. Bought with money orders and via Paypal. If it's a product that I am really interested in, the form of payment and it's convenience is not going to be a deciding factor.
-
Could be too that the buyer was going to use PayPal credit to pay for the rifle. Obviously, you have to cough up the bucks to get a money order.
-
Yep, a Money order for the dollar amount you want means the BUYER has to pay extra fee, where Pay-Pal the SELLER pays the fees.
Not his fault.
If you are thinking "Friends and Family" for Pay-pal where you the seller get the total amount, the buyer has no Pay-pal protection...
Again, shows his trust in you.
If I were him might walk away too. ::)
-
Also note that a lot of fraud on sites like craglist the seller wants m.o. PayPal has some sort of assurance.
-
paypal has only assurance for the buyer. the seller gets the shaft if the buyer says he did not get the merchandise. i got a now dropped dispute for a beeman R1. sent it with tracking. P.O says they dropped it. buyer says he never received it. investigation ensued for now 6 years. Paypal refunded him and took out of my account. I will NEVER use paypal again. If you cant cough up 1 dollar for a M.O. you cant cough up enough for an air rifle... and even if that was an issue, take the value of the M.O. off the price... ill be fine with that.

I have gone back to purchasing everything with my credit card - NO PROBLEMS! - and I have not sold any rifle or pellets except face-to-face.
Sorry PayPal. :P :P

There ARE a lot of scammers out there that actively monitor the other classified sites. Did you not list the form of payment you accepted in the ad? A BIG red flag would be if during the payment negotiation they mentioned they were out of the country and would send their "agent" by to pick up the merchandise and pay by certified check. Never ship before payment clears. And really best to wait and sell anything here on GTA. No site is 100% foolproof but we take extreme measures to help make our classifieds the safest on the internet. Like the requirements we have.
:)
Good luck. And my gut feeling is you were wise to not pursue that transaction!!!
I stopped listing on Brad's site due to the amount of scammers lurking there.

I use GTA & Pay Pal exclusively for used items. Good people here, and my Pay Pal credit is almost maxed. :) It sure is nice being poor.
-
by accepting paypal as a payment, will about guarantee you will get paid.
and buying with paypal you will be refunded if the seller is a scammer.
it happened to me last year and i got my refund in about 31days.
-
If a seller does not accept Pay-Pal is when I get a little concerned.
-
Agreed. Without PayPal the buyer has no protection.

exactly ;)

Agreed. Without PayPal the buyer has no protection.
I have been satisfied with the way my credit card companies have "HAD MY BACK!" 100% protection is hard to beat.
-
Good point! But how many private sellers take credit cards?
-
Dave, allow me to add a little to my previous post:
I have a PayPal account and have used it several time without any problems.
The part about the credit card companies comes in when it comes to paying what I have bought using PayPal. PayPal gets paid from the Credit Card and I get double protection - If PayPal doesn't refund a bad deal, then they don't get paid by the Credit Card. Works GREAT!
-
Mike, that's even better. ;D
-
I have used Paypal since 2005!
I may disagree with some of their tactics, but I am ok with that.
If I sell, I send an invoice first with a FULL description, and condition, then buyer pays me, then I ship priority with tracking (and insurance if high value item). I follow tracking till arrival. I then send an email to confirm all is good!
If I buy, I ask for the same!
This way, actually BOTH seller and buyer have protection. Should there be an issue, Paypal gets involved to mitigate.
I ONLY use Paypal.
After dealing with someone a couple of times, ONLY then would I send funds as F&F.
I have had no problems buying or selling! Thank the force!
Cheers

PayPal will screw you and they will ban you if they catch wind of a gun transaction.. even airguns at their discretion. I only do uspo money order. I was on eBay with no negative feedback ever but quit shopping there when they wouldn't let you have a account without PayPal. Sounds like I am the minority here but why pay to support ideals you don't aggree with? Even a face to face transaction has potential to screw someone despite how thorough you are. Look on pb forums and you will see. I don't have much money, but I try not to support any corporation with anti American views.
