Title: Who knew?
Post by: avator on January 24, 2018, 12:46:11 PM
The safety department manager stopped by my desk today to discus an incident report I had turned in. He said he had stopped by earlier when I was away from my desk and was enjoying the slideshow on my computer screen of my gun collection. He told me that he has been collecting air guns since he was a kid and has well over 100 of them. He told me that he does not work on them and he has many parts, pieces and non-working guns that he was going to drop off at my house possibly as soon as this weekend. How cool would that be?

That would be VERY cool!!

Most of the air gunners I know do not use the forums, some even don't use the internet, lol..

Ya never know who is and who isn't an air gunner IRL..

Sounds like yer about to come up smellin' like roses at work with this guy, Bill, very cool!

who knows what'll be in there?!?!

Would be nice...
I have been down this road before though. I try not to get too excited until it actually happens. Kinda like the guy a couple weeks ago in the local second hand shop. He told us to meet him there the next day and he had several air guns he found while cleaning out his grandmother's basement. He was a no show.
Hopefully this won't be the case. I do see this guy everyday. Gonna be tuff trying not to remind him daily.

Not sure what all he has. He did mention a Daisy model 25 that he had since childhood and a "Franklin" but wasn't specific.

Owww, that sounds quite fun. Maybe a long shot, but if he has a fill adapter for a fixed cylinder Morini let me know. Also, a co2 adapter for a Steyr LP

Two things: first started reading it and thought the safety officer was going to take issue with guns as a screen saver type story.

For a guy that has over 100 airguns you'd think he would do work on them and also be very specific about what he has just on memory.....perhaps he inherited the lot?

I'm sure he does minimal tinkering because he said he has lots of pieces and parts. I've been pretty successful finding oldies in the 4+ years that I've been here in the back woods of Alabama. He's been here all his life. That gives me hope that what he has is what he's gathered and picked up locally along life's way. He didn't know anything about the GTA or ordering guns online. The conversation was too short to know for sure. I'll see if I can slow him down enough today to get a little more information. With 750 team members working 2 12 hours shifts you can imagine how busy the safety guy is. As far as the gun screen saver.. most everyone at work knows what I do and it's accepted. I've even had air gun related packages left at my desk from UPS and FedEx. Those were placed there by the security guard. This is one reason I was so surprised that he didn't know. Unless you enter my cubical area you wouldn't see my computer monitors anyhow.

Great way to link up with other shooters, although at lots of places I am sure it would be frowned on. What a shame that is.
Great find on the parts and pieces, no telling what may be in there and you have another air gunner pal.
didn't Benjamin drop FRANKLIN from guns in the 70's?

OK, now I'm excited....
Just spoke to ole boy. Asked where he got all the air gun stuff. He said he has always been fascinated with anything gun. He picked them up at yard sales and flea markets throughout his life. He's never worked on them. If they shot, he shot them and if not, he stuck them in a closet. If he ran across parts and pieces he stuck them in a box. He said he had one that his grandfather gave to him and he wanted to get that working, the rest I could have. He also told me that he knows a guy that lives maybe 40 miles from here that has a shed full of airgun stuff. Literally 100s. He don't work on them either.... just yard sale finds. The safety guy says he will try to hook me up with this guy as well.
Man, I hope this ain't BS.  We'll see.

Stuck my head in the Safety office door on the way out of work last night and said "Hey Matt, bring me guns". I got the thumbs up..... we'll see.

He had shown particular interest in a 1377 carbine on my screen. I have one here that I may take in to show him. Maybe it will promote motivation.

What a great connection. We all want to see pictures of what you end up with.
Nice that at least one batch of these is going to (you) someone who will appreciate them and preserve them. Hopefully the other batch does too.
Otherwise they may have ended up in a dumpster

Don't now about a dumpster but it can't be good for them to be sitting in a shed.
Title: Re: Who knew?
Post by: avator on January 26, 2018, 11:50:04 AM
Oh boy.... there may be some hope...
Matt stopped by my box this morning to tell me that he has his pumper pistol in the truck. He said his grandfather passed this one down to him and it's not pumping up. We all know that's normally a pretty simple fix. He said it's a rear cocker. I'll snatch it up at lunch time and get it running for him then we'll go from there.
Title: Re: Who knew?
Post by: avator on January 26, 2018, 03:49:09 PM
On the way out to lunch I snatched the rear cocker 1377 out of Matt's truck. After a plate of spaghetti, cottage cheese and salad I step out to the shooting bench on the rear deck. I opened the pump arm and put 3 drops of secret sauce on the felt and pumped her up. Pulled back on the rear cocking lever and hit the trigger..... BANG !!!   Just like a new one. Then I sent a couple pellets downrange with a big ole grin on my face.
Matt said he wanted to make it into a carbine like the one on my screen saver so I went back in the house and grabbed the one off the rack that is shown on my screen saver. Sent a few downrange to make sure it's still in good working order. Now I'm waiting for Matt to get back from lunch.... I guess you know why.
BTW.... he said he would gather up the rest of the bunch this weekend and bring them to me. I could only hope there are more jewels like this on in the bunch.

Well.... not so fast there Bobbalouie...
The 1377 RC just happens to be one that Matt's Granddaddy left to him when he passed. He has fond memories of shooting the gun together. I couldn't bring myself to even offer a trade. I asked to follow me to the house after work where I'll return his beloved pistol to him in working order. I did show him the carbine which brought quite a spark to his eyes and he wants it. I didn't quote him a price, instead I proposed that he bring what he has and we'll work it out.
Title: Re: Who knew?
Post by: avator on January 26, 2018, 04:14:27 PM
If he's going to drop a pile of non working guns on me, the least I could do is hand him a working one. Specially if they need nothing more than his did.

LOL Wendell... "BobbaLouie" was directed at myself. I think we hit "post" at about the same time.

Oh well, my search for a rear cocking 1377 will continue. I've got plenty to keep me occupied in the meantime.

It's actually almost as good of a feeling to get this one up and running for as it would be to find one.

I've been seeing some rear cockers show up on ebay.
You may wind up with one in the mix that's coming? (or something even better) ;D

maybe another m/m 880 out there...lol

Awesome! That will be one cool score if it comes to fruition.  AND sounds like you have two lottery chances!  Good luck, wishing it works out.
I have recently been looking for a couple of child hood guns (I think my folks sold them in a garage sale when I was away at college) a specific crosman 760 model, and a rear cocker 1377.  They both had brass triggers and the 760 a brass bolt and square BB loader.  Took many varmits with that 760!
If some are in the mix, and you want to sell, PM me and lets talk!.
Aloha,
Mike

I'll bet there will probably be a daisy lever cocker in there for sure.

LOL.... I'm trying to stay contained.
I called Matt yesterday and left a voicemail telling him that I had his gun with me at work and he was welcome to come by and get it. He didn't return the call or come by. I'm glad he didn't because when I got home last night I got the gun out of the truck to take it in the house and curiosity made me pump it. It wouldn't build pressure. Looks like I'll need to put a new piston cup seal in it. I have a few down in the shop as soon as I get motivated.

Couple pics that Renfield sent me of the 1377 RC. If you think they look good you should see it in person. Replaced a missing pump handle pin and a dried out pump piston cup seal. It's now pumping air but blowing it right out the barrel. I ran out of time on my lunch break to go any further. I'll dig back in after work and reseal the valve. I've had one of these in my sights for some time now.
Gotta love the GTA.

NICE!
Had one given to me by 2Beers before Christmas. Went right through it, happy that it was a sliding breech.
However, could not get it to stop leaking around the breech/transfer port area, and went to new breech and bolt.
 It don't leak a mite, now. ;D

Hopefully Matt is just a busy guy but I got the old "I didn't get a chance to round up the old guns this past weekend" shpeel yesterday. I've heard this before.
On a better note, I got back down to the shop last night and dug back into my 1377 RC. I pulled the valve out and stuck another one in that happened to be laying on the bench. Seemed a bit difficult to push past the last bit before reaching home position. Finished putting it back together and it's not quite up to par. I think there may be some roughness in the tube and it may have nicked up the oring when I pushed it in. It did shoot though. I'll get back to it tonight and check that tube out. Maybe just needs some polishing up. I'll also rebuild the original valve. I plan on doing some trigger work as well. It has the inherent hard pull as all stock 13XX pistols do. I noticed a BB in the chamber stuck to the magnet on the bolt. I can't help but wonder how many BBs were shot through the gun. I'll have a look at the rifling. I have spare barrels if it's badly worn.
Title: Re: Who knew?
Post by: Matchstickshooter on January 30, 2018, 09:38:32 AM
I found out right off that you just can't stick a newer barrel on; it's chambered different,to match the end of that bolt.
the original barrels seem to have a large tapered lead in.

I still have the left over barrel, magnetic bolt/breech cover if you need them. Barrel's not great, but still has some rifling.

It's certainly going to get some attention. This hobby is as much about tinkering as it is about shooting for me. Pretty sure I would lose interest if every gun shot perfectly right out of the box. One of the reasons that I've been able to keep all my air gun purchases sub $250. Any more than that I would most likely expect more.

Matt brought me a Crosman 357 C02 pistol and said I could have it. He said he was still rounding up the other old guns. I brought it home and it's in bad shape. It holds C02 but it won't shoot at all. Looks like someone used it for a hammer. Parts will need replaced. Not sure if it's worth the cost of the parts so it will go into the spares bin. The nice thing is.. the barrel looks mint. I swapped it onto my Vigilante and I really like the "old school" look of it.

We took some OTC junk and got a good night's sleep. I'll get through the pile of work that built up on my desk today and take a slow weekend. Hopefully a little shop time.

Yeah Wendell.... same Vigi. I'm with you on the "blocky" look of the barrel. That's why I changed it. Looks much more real. Here's a couple pics I grabbed from the net to compare....

while i had it apart - i experimented a little by adding an old 760 pump assembly with the mac1 setup - it fit very nicely. i actually like it more than the stock setup on the 1377.

but in the end - i kept it all original minus the new seals & pump cup.

it's loosing a little air from around where the barrel meets the plastic breech.
i imagine that isn't too uncommon for these old plastic breeches though (1977)

anyhow, ran some pellets through the 1377RC - its a very fun pistol.

don't think i'll hang onto this one either - i'll set it aside for a future trade.

next up is an old benji 130 - seems to be missing parts: 1321, 1344, 1336, 1342, 1325

I dunno, but in my experience once I got the first 2 or 3 in the door, the wife did not notice any additions!

That is great, hope it lasts. If you start running out of places to put them she may notice.
Good luck,
Gary

You can replace the transfer port seal with a piece of nylon ice maker tubing. Works great.

Thanks guys.... feeling better this morning. Betty Lou seems to be better as well. I don't think it was the flu... it didn't last long enough. Probably just some virus.

A much nicer look!  Glad you're felling better!

Mine leaked there,no matter what I tried...
Now it wears a new plastic breech and bolt, and passes the tissue test with flying colors.

Not a problem!  I built 2 secret closets in the basement, not to hide them from her but from burglars. Two bookcases 4' x 6' on piano hinges. Behind one I kept all my guns I was not currently using.  The other I used to open up to give me a full 10 meter basement shooting range!

Yep.... picked up a Silver Anniversary Daisy 880 from him for $15. I've since rebuilt it and I'm real happy with it for what it is. He seems to be one of those, not so motivated, types. It's all good. Both of our jobs get quite demanding at times and they extend well beyond the 8 to 5.
For example...
One of my guys was unloading an 8500kg steel coil from a truck yesterday with the 30 ton OH crane. The truck driver slid the cowl closed on the trailer before the coil was completely cleared. The coil swung back and damaged the trailer cowl. The driver called his dispatch and said it was my Team Member's fault..... little did he know, I monitor video cameras in that area and have the clip saved. This tied both of us up for quite some time.

Well, Matt came through again. Today is a non-production day here at the plant and only us lowly salaried employees are here. Matt came by my "cube" and asked if I wanted another air rifle. Said he picked it up at a yard sale. A GAMO Delta Cadet. We walked out to his truck and checked it out. Seems to operate as it should but there is a bit peeling on the synthetic stock. Easy fix with a coat of bed liner paint. I didn't have any pellets on hand so I cocked it just short of the sear locking in. No apparent spring issues. Nice little 10mm plinker, barn pester or youth gun.
$25 well spent.

Ended up trading the GAMO Cadet to my neighbor for that NOS BSA CT6-24x50TS scope.

Works for me. He wants to give the GAMO to his granddaughter.
