Title: Vintage Pumper, Modern Pumper, and Vintage EE Casual Match **RESULTS ADDED**
Post by: JimQwerty123 on January 21, 2018, 04:42:24 PM
HEAR YE! HEAR YE!  HEAR YE!

Spread the Word far and wide

The inaugural Vintage Pumper, Modern Pumper, and Vintage Everything Else Casual Match is open for business. The Casual Match is a fun match. Shoot whatever Vintage Pumper, Modern Pumper, or Vintage Everything Else gun (see below) that you want at 10M (more or less depending on what you have available), use any position, rest or optic that you prefer. See below for the details.

Rules are the same as for the 50’ Casual Match, except as noted below. Distance is 10M instead of 50’, using the 50’ target of choice.  If you are like me and limited to distance, shoot at whatever distance you have available.

Classes are:
•   Vintage Pumper (VP) (as defined in the Vintage Gate – manufactured pre-1985)
•   Modern Pumper (MP) (Manufactured after 1984)
•   Vintage Everything Else (VEE) (as defined in the Vintage Gate – manufactured pre-1985)

Unlike the regular casual match, multiple entries may be made in each class as long as the air rifles are substantially different. For example, all Sheridan Series C Streaks (Blue or Silver) manufactured prior to 1985 would be considered to be substantially the same and only one Series C entry would be allowed. However, if you a Super Grade and a Series C, an entry may be made for each gun. A Sheridan and a Benjamin would be different air rifles even if in the same class. I’m sure that this will cause some confusion. We’ll work it out as we go along. The object of this match is to have fun and show off out pumpers and vintage guns.

If possible, please turn in a scan or picture of the target. If you want to show off your gun, then please include a picture. Please note, that a scan or picture of the target or gun is optional.

Target due date is Sunday, February 4, 2018.

The 50’ rules and targets may be found at:

http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=114644.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=114644.0)

Please include the following information with your entry:

Call name or real name
Class (VP, MP, VEE)
Air rifle or Pistol Make and Model (e.g., Sheridan Super Grade)
Sighting system
Pellet and caliber
Shooting position and/or aid(s)
Score

I’ll post entries to an excel spreadsheet and sort by class. If we get enough entries, then I post a 2nd spreadsheet sorted by make and model.

Shoot safe and have fun,

Jim

This is GREAT jim.
Thank you very much for taking me up on my suggestion. BUT YOU took it the next level!
I was hoping for a Pumper class added to the already established Casual 10M but your idea for a separate Match, divided into these three Classes is OVER THE TOP!!!

I can shoot my Sheridan C, Benji 342, even my 312 in Vintage (VP) ... My 392P, Sheridan C9 and my newest 392 in another (MP)... and my 160 in the everything else (VEE).

I think I am gonna have a right arm that looks like Popeye's

Scott,

Spread the word. Let's drum up some friendly competition.

15 minutes with my Sheridan Blue Streak and my shoulder is killing me (rotator cuff problem). I'm going to have to talk my daughter into be my "pumping assistant."  ;D

Does you 300s classify as vintage?

Jim

Oh, yeah... 1980  ;)
But I am gonna keep using that over in the original "Jumper" class.  The whole thought process I had was to get this rolling was for "other" guns that I simply could not compete with there.  :-[
You have mentored me over there last couple years there, and watched me progress up the ranks.
This is my way of trying to get more members involved in the Matches with what they have interest in... Vintage and Pumpers!
I started many threads in the various gates, as you know, and I am thankful the Mods did not see them as redundant and "Clean House".

Tomorrow I will try and get some shots in!

I am looking forward to the Cardio work out.  ;D

Since I instigated this I shot a target tonight with my Crosman 160 in the VEE class as an example to all the newcomers.
If I take out the center totally it is an "X" (roman numeral 10) an it counts pointwise as a 10 but an "X"  will beat a "10" that just touches the Dot .
Hope it scans OK. I use a red construction paper behind it to help show the holes.
And included a complimentary pic of the old Gal for bragging rights. ;)

Here we go....

Call name: Hoosier Daddy
Class: VEE
Air rifle Make and Model: Crosman 160
Sighting system: S331 peep
Pellet and caliber: JSB .22 15.89 Exact
Shooting position : Bench with 2 bag rest
Score: 179 / 2X

Scott, wouldn't your "X-10" be an "X-X"? Even though there is a hint of gray at the bottom? Are you sure the paper didn't rebound? I found that if I find the dead center entry point, place the pellet in that location, some of the paper remained. I think you sold yourself short on that one. I think the only way a person can get a clean hole is with a wad-cutter & just the right backing. Am I blowing smoke or do you concur?

...& the "9-8" next to the "X-10", shouldn't the 9 be a 10?

I’m not familiar with the Baikal MP-523. Am I correct in that it is a piston power plant with a side lever?

If yes and it is manufactured before 1985 then it goes in VEE. If after 1984, then it goes in the jumper class in the off season 10M class in the shooter gate. I don’t know how to post a link from my phone. I’ll try to post link when I get home

Jim

**Edit**
Oops. My bad. It looks like the MP-532 is an SSP and made post 1984 so it would go in the modern pumper class.

Atta Boy Marty!!!

Ever hear the saying "Be careful what you wish for...it just might come true"
Well that is me right about now!
This @$%^ is TOUGH with a Pumper!
I learned my 342 shoots better than my prized C Sheridan... and my C9 'Dan needs a rebuild.... Even the '15 Benji 392 with a 4X32 scope is a challenge.
2nd night in a row trying to shoot a decent target with pumpers.... the wife wants to have me committed.

Oh what fun!!!!

Glad I'm not the only one Scott. ;)

I thought this would be a cake walk. Been doing most of my shooting out to 40 yds. Man was I mistaken. Nail 1 row, then the 2nd not so good, the third even worse & forget about the 4th row. Took a while till I could judge the hold over/under. Hint, place the target on the horizontal & use the &^^& out of the 2 crosshairs.

Marty, couldn't you claim the same score with 5X by dropping your two 10-9's instead of your two 9-X's?

My first attempts this weekend were quite humbling .....with open sights on my Blue Streaks!  May have to fix that and add some glass.

Thank you Arlan. I completely missed that. ;)

I don't know how anyone can determine POI with open sites. A scope definately helps. I am currently trying to post up a series with my Crosman 101. Since I can not see the bulls-eye I am having to use the outer black rings as a guide by first zeroing in on the middle bulls with the target set on the horizontal. Then using the same outer black rings to try & judge hold under for both the bottom & top bulls. I am finding that the peep site on the 101 is taylor made for this type shooting. If your Dan is pre-tapped for a Williams I would highly recommend using one. If not, a scope works well.

Another noticable advantage with the 101 is the trigger (narrow & crisp). The Dan's trigger is also good but not as good as the 101 for this type shooting (in my opinion). On the other end of the spectrum is the Benji's trigger. 3 or 4 times larger/bulkier. Not ideal for this application. A while back Scott Decker metioned how good the 101 is. I'm beginning to understand why.

This is true Jim. At this close a range I'm only using 4/5 pumps. With the target set on the horizontal & sighted in on the 4 middle bulls, my poi changes dramatically for the bottom bulls. My poi is at the inside edge of the black bull at 6 o-clock, & 1/3 up from the black bull on the top row. It is a battle but its fun just the same.

I just wanted to add that if shooting at only 27 ft disqualifies me I totally understand.I just wanted to make sure that I participated because I said that I would.

I also want to thank everyone who set this up because it has been really fun and helps take the edge off during my winter lay off.

Shooting at 27 feed does not disqualify you. This is a fun match so shoot the distance you have available. Less than 10M is okay if you are limited to space.

I see that I that I didn't include the above when I created this match. Here is the wording from the 10M Casual Off season match:

If you are like me and limited to distance, shoot at whatever distance you have available.

My indoor distance is just over 30 feet, or about 2 feet 5 inches less than the 32' 10" for 10M.

If a higher score is posted before the deadline with a simular/same gun, can it be entered?

Marty,

1st post counts. That is why most shooters wait to Sunday to post. I know when I first started competing in the regular matches I had a couple of instances when I posted early then shot a better score afterwards. 2nd post with the same gun wouldn't count but can be posted for bragging rights.

This would be for the same gun. How similar is the other gun?

The question was asked just as a question. If it was allowed maybe I would be inclined to attempt another go-round with the same guns. Your answer helps though for next time. ;)

Welcome mac / Scott. Darn nice for your first time with either of those two.
 :D
It may be your photo, but from here, the lines on your targets look really faint. Might be time for a new ink cartridge in your printer.
Dark crisp lines will help you a lot!
Also I see these are both in the MP class, Jim will have to confirm but I think it is one gun per class. You might have to pick your best one of the two for this

Mac / Scott,

This match is set up different. Multiple entries in the same class are okay as long as the guns are substantially different. Here is the wording from the 1st post:

"Unlike the regular casual match, multiple entries may be made in each class as long as the air rifles are substantially different. For example, all Sheridan Series C Streaks (Blue or Silver) manufactured prior to 1985 would be considered to be substantially the same and only one Series C entry would be allowed. I would believe that a Pumpmaster and a Daisy 880 would be considered different guns.

Scott,

It seems that there is a lot of interest in this match. I believe you poked your finger in the hornet's nest!

Do you believe that there would be an interest in a 5M vintage (pre-85) pistol match?

If yes, spread the word and if we get enough interest I don't mind setting up a match.

Just to be clear.... 10 meters would be 32.80 feet correct? I just want to be honest in posting results. I have every intention of joining in the fun the week. Maybe even on several levels.
First things first... I have to find some dang printer ink.

Jim,
  I hope the interest grows!
I think a pistol match would be cool too, but that would require another gun purchase for me. (win-win)  ;D

Bill, yep, 32' 10" from the trigger to the target.
But like Jim said this is a casual match so shoot what you got available.
I shoot from one end of the family room across to the other end, through an open door to the utility room and have the target set against the far wall of that room.   ;)

Thanks guys!

Yes I need a new ink cartridge and some new eyes! I thought I would be able to use open sights when I bought my first gun and quickly found out that it,s not even remotely possible.
I,m going to do some research in the optics gate because I really need better scopes. The only way I can see out of the scopes that I have is to put put on my readers. It,s a little too hard to try and look through the bifocals on my regular glasses LOL.

I hope to have a vintage class Benjiman or Sheridan for next time, but for now my 880 is definitely my favorite and I kinda think it always will be.

LOL.... Betty Lou puts up with most of my follies but even she has limits. One of the reasons I moved the make shift work bench out of the house is because she failed to find the need to even dry fire a gun in the house. She gives me plenty of rope... think I'll not hang myself with it.

Hopefully I'll have another class entered before tomorrow.

Class (VP, MP, VEE)
Air rifle or Pistol Make and Model (e.g., Sheridan Super Grade)
Sighting system
Pellet and caliber
Shooting position and/or aid(s)
Score

Thanks,

Jim

Nice shooting Jim. Just wanted to add I over looked the first 2 targets on the list. Seems like these would save quite a bit on ink.

This match may cause me to have shoulder surgery if I can't get my pump assist working.

Thank you.

I believe that most of us have gone to the 1st 2 targets to save on ink. Maybe we can talk Mart2 to dropping the other targets or changing the name on the 1st two to include "Ink Savers" in the name.

Please don't remove them. I can not see the one you guys use through peeps, even with my glasses on.
At 10M I need that black center of ink.

Thanks to everyone that participated,to Jim for doing the work and to Scott for coming up with it. It was fun and I can,t waite to try some more.
I never thought much about a pistol, but I might have to see if Wally World has any 1377 on the shelf so I can get in on the new one.

mac,

If you are looking at a 1377 take a look at the Crosman Custom Shop 1300KT. It's a little more and will take several weeks to arrive but it does have some great built in features.

I had a 1377, well I still have it but is in completely different form. Added the steel breach because I have to have an optic (my arms are too shot to see sights and target at the same time). Then I added an 18" barrel, wide trigger,  and shoulder stock. Then I added a TKO LDC. Then I added a fatty pump arm. All of this was before the 1300KT came out. I've seen the 1377 referred to as a money pit, black hole, and the most expense $50 gun ever because of all the mods that may be done.

Hmm... I'll have to find another scope for it (the scope I had on it now resides on my Blue Streak) and shoot the MP class. It's a fun little gun to shoot.

Have fun with your 1377,

Jim

Thanks Jim

I actually looked into doing that and found out that Crosman will not ship to Illinois when ordering online.I could not even get a refurb 2100 shipped when ordering online.

I called and talked to customer service and they said I could get the 2100 over the phone but not online - so that means I can,t order from the custom shop.Kind of a bummer because I had a pretty cool one built on the custom shop site.

From reading a lot of threads here on GTA it looks like  I can build one using various different venders but it will cost more and the whole 1377/1322 things looks like it could be a real rabbit hole! LOL.

I believe I would call Crosman and explain the situation to see if they would let you place a custom shop order by phone.

I set up a 10 meter range on the rear deck of our house after work last night. I wanted to run through a few guns and pellets to see where I would best fit in these matches. I still haven't got around to getting ink for the printer so I was making 5 rows of 5 circles measuring about 3/16 on a sheet of paper. I began with the metal/metal Daisy 880 which shot well enough to compete. Got to thinking that I didn't want to shoot a run of the mill Daisy 880. I wanted something different... Enter the Mendoza RM377. Made for Crosman from '81 - '83. I shot for a couple hours. I had pictures and stats and all the goodies to show it off. All in Betty Lou's cell phone. After the session I went in the house to move the pics to the laptop and for some reason.... all files were corrupt. That was discouraging enough just to send me to bed.
I will make another attempt this weekend... I should have ink by then.
Warning.... that RM377 did a really good job. Looking forward to it.

Don't tell me your bailing on the 880? Thought we'd go head to head. Your metal against my plastic. :)

Scott.... I'm not quite sure how to do the scoring yet since I don't have any of the correct targets printed out.
Marty.... I'm more likely going to enter a few different guns. The 880 was doing quite well. I just wanted to try something different and grabbed the RM377. I'm going to look at some open sight oldies as well when I print targets out that I can see with the naked eye. Such as the '69 347 and 312. I also have some guns in the MP class.
One of my objectives was to find a pellet to replace the Winnie domes when they run out. The RM377 proves to be the least pellet picky so far. The JSB 8.4 Diabolo and the Winnies were basically shooting neck and neck as far as accuracy goes.
If nothing else, this is providing some fun plinking and a chance to revisit some of my neglected guns. The days are beginning to get a little longer and some depression caused by going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark is lifting.

Bill, when I first took up this hobby I never thought I’d be launching lead at a target smaller than the bullet. A long way from how my dad taught me; son if we can hit that fence post on the top of that hill we’re good to go.

Glad your on board & that winter's grip is loosening up a bit.

If I'm not mistaken you guys are taking 2 shots per target. Is that consecutive or do you run through the page of targets twice?

Post by: JimQwerty123 on February 09, 2018, 06:35:25 PM
Bill,

Either way is acceptable.

Also, depends on the target. Some are designed for one shot per bull and some for two. (The one shot per bull targets tend to be used with scopes.

I tried to give a better explanation in the tread for the new match. At least, I played cut and paste from rules for the regular season 50' casual match. I believe that I posted a link to these rules.

Please ask if you have any specific questions. Also, Mart2 is probably better at answering scoring questions than I am.

Have fun,

Jim

I think I will shoot 1 shot per target next time, easier for me to remember how many shots I took. As far as scoring I score in favor of the competition if in doubt, yeah I'm that laid back LOL  8)

Bill, the directions for the match explains the scoring well. Jim can correct me if I’m wrong but here’s a pic that illustrates the scoring. You always score the highest number even if the mark barely makes contact with the line. On the .20 & .22 cal there is an outer ring surrounding the bull. Clipping this ring scores a 10. Clipping the bull on the .177 also scores a 10. In order to mark an “X” on either the .20, .22 or the .177 the bull must be completely wiped out.

Marty & Bill,

For the 24 bull (ink saver) targets... 1 shot per bull for 24 bulls. For score you eliminate 2 boxes containing 2 bulls each for a possible high score of 200/200. For a 10, it must touch the inner black dot. For an X you still need to totally remove the dot on the 4.5mm target and totally remove the shaded area around the dot on the 5.5 target.
