Title: Big bore Airmax pistol!
Post by: Kerndtc on January 01, 2018, 04:35:24 PM
I had a marauder .25 barrel laying around for some time that had a really bad tight spot for the first 4" and I haven't thought of anything to use it for until this morning.

Chopped the first 4" off and turned it down to fit in my airmax pistol!

There was a slight leak in the transfer port seal so I made an adjustment after that shot string. Now it's shooting kings at 530fps for 20 shots!

Nice work installing a Mrod barrel on the Airmax, what is the OD of the barrel turned down to fit in the Airmax breech?

.395" OD is what is required to slip in!

Nice and interesting, but can it shoot a bit faster than 530ish thats kind of co2 speeds.

It certainly can shoot faster! The transfer port is still factory, looks to be slightly smaller than .17 and it is more than halfway restricted with the choking screw.

Next I will open up the TP and see what happens.

Keep us posted, bigger caliber pistols are always intresting, thats why I made a .357 pistol for myself.

Lol ... Winter time fiddling.
Cameron, yea the pistols LITTLE plenum will be the power limiter I'm afraid.

I know that SPA makes .25 CP1 pistols, I haven't found a place that's had them in stock but Krale might have them using a different model number.  I know the bigger the caliber with co2 can really pack a whallop.

I've been toying with making a big bore out of one of my Benjamin discoverys. Unfortunately the breech is so small, it would be very hard to get a larger caliber than .25 in it!

Exactly. The plenum is quite minimal, I don't know if I could get any more than another CC out of it if I tried.

Hard to believe that the pistol was shooting 10fpe in .177 with these settings and near 16fpe with a barrel swap.

I'll try to get a little more power out of it with some simple porting but I don't want to go too crazy. This thing already kicks pretty good! Got a rabbit with it as soon as I mounted the scope.

Take the regulator out and run a few strings, perhaps you may get a few awesome shots out of it ? Nice job !

I have bunnies all over the place. It's reassuring that when Jessica and I take on a second mortgage for the ranch I will have a steady supply of protein lol

Great project Cameron!

Thanks buddy! Hope it's warmed up a little bit up there!

Cameron, nice work and shooting!

Thank you sir!

That might be a good idea, I'm just unsure if the gun is designed to have a regulator because the rest of the gun isn't rated for 3000psi?

Pistol FT will probably still be with my chopped AR2079 Pifle! Just put an EV2 barrel on it a few days ago and have to do a little tuning to keep it at 12fpe! (Pic below)

I just switched the scope out for my Hawke red dot and had fun shooting a 10" aluminum pot at 50 yards offhand. Four shots, four hits!

I ran out over the chrony and took 2 full turns of HS preload off and it is shooting the same velocity. Might get a few more shots per fill now.

Does it have a burst disk after the regulator? If not then it must be rated at full reservoir pressure, in case the regulator malfunction.

Cool pistol mod . Wish there were more larger caliber pistols available . Baker airguns makes a big bore aluminum breech and bolt for crosman airguns for a 1/2" OD barrel . TJ makes several barrel liners with a 1/2" OD . I've wanted to build a big bore pistol for a few years but I do not have the tools, I don't even have a drill press any more  :o

I believe that pistol can do much more than it is currently getting for sure ;)  You can pull the guts of the factory regulator, make some mods so it'll still seal, and open up some other bits in the chain to effectively enlarge that plenum a bit, then throw a Huma in there :D  I've had my .177 up to 25fpe with no regulator, but 20fpe is the realistic limit with the Huma installed fwiw :)  This is with the factory barrel, so I'm sure that little bugger can get some good numbers in .25 with a longer barrel!

Very nice work on the build by the way!!

I just did an AIRMAX .25 conversion myself using a TJ's .25 barrel from my Warp ( 12" )
With some valve work, increases in transfer path plumbing and a huma reg with gutted OEM reg it shoots pretty well.
Can muster JSB kings @ 620 fps but finding it happier closer to 540/560 range. ( @ 17 ft lbs )

Got to shoot Camerons last week and found it quite cool to have a Big Bore Airmax ..... so, made one too  8)

Thanks buddy !
