Title: Texas Exotic, Hog, Predator and Small Game Hunt
Post by: Extreme on January 01, 2018, 03:50:16 AM
.   January 3, 2018 I will be meeting up with Jim (Santiago) Chapman in Junction Tx. We will start our hunt for Exotic's,  First on the menu is an Aoudad then the Axis Deer, then we drive to Fort Stockton Tx to chase the elusive Oryx ( Redemption Hunt) Predators, Spanish Goats, and Small Game. Then we will head to Penwell Tx for a Predator and Hog night hunt! These hunts will all be Airgun Hunts, I hope we have time to make all these hunts. We have planned a 6day hunt, It will be non stop for sure!! I have been looking forward to this hunt all year long!!! Jim is bringing his Badger .40, Texan .308, Recluse .357 with plenty of arrows, and Bantam .22 I will be bringing my Extreme .457, 909S .45, Kral Jumbo .25, Compatto .22, Daystate Regal .22, and TX200HC .22 also coming along for this trip are 3 - 88min bottles and my Omega Compressor. Lol can't run out of AIR!!!! Lol that Extreme .457 is an AIR HOG!!!! 4300psi for 600fpe
On our small game hunt we will be using our Bantam and Compatto, then I'll be using my Regal and I'm gonna have Jim shoot my John in PA tuned TX200HC .22 using the GTO pellets to put down Tx Jackrabbits. Last year I was so impressed with Jim's off hand shooting skills taking Jacks with my HW97K .20 that this year I'll have shoot more Jacks with a different Springer. I don't know if we'll make all these hunts and take all these animals on the menu, but we will give it 100% of our effort!!

I will keep you guys informed on our success or unsuccessful hunts, Jim will have to post pics because I can't. Wish us luck Fellas!!

Gracias Tom, I'm really stoked about this one. Weather should. Warm up a bit to make our hunts a little bit more bearable.  Lol last year Jim and I about froze!!! Yesterday's hi was 24 and 18 Lo
At this moment it's 10degrees burrrrrrr its cold!!! Wednesday high should be 40-45 by the weekend in the mid 50's . My freezer is running low on venison so the Axis will be welcomed and eaten up. Aoudad is not bad, I like to ground it and make meat loaf or burgers. Cottontail bunnies will be fried or made into stew. Nothing goes to waste, love wild game!!
Jim is a great guy, easy to talk to and so much knowledge on Airguns and Airgun History. But, has a lot of knowledge on history and many other subjects. Has a great sense of humor, but this Man is a serious Hunter for sure! Jim loves being in the outdoors and hunting. Last year we had a few awesome stalks which was exciting in themselves. Where we hunt it's rough country and most of our hunts will be spot and stalk. Calling predators is one of my favorite hunts, very challenging. So we have our work cut out for us. Let's see where this ride will take us.

Thanks and we will update as we go along. Providing there is internet service where we will be at.
Take care Fellas

Sounds like my kind of outing Chacho, but that's a lot for 6 days. I really hope you guys get the opportunity to harvest every species you listed.

Please take special note-I anxiously await pics, vids, & some details hopefully starting on the 4th  ;D

Good luck to you & Jim, & don't forget the Gatorade, going by what your itinerary looks like I'm pretty sure you'll need it.

Thank you Fellas!!! Yea it's a lot to try to harvest in 6days but, we are gonna give it our best effort for sure!!! We really want to take the Aoudad, Axis and Oryx for sure!! Small game, and predators can be harvested at night. The Spanish Goats and Hog hunting will be our last species to target. But most definitely the horned animals first!!! Going to be busy that's for sure!! I'll have Jim help me post pics and teach me how. I hope we have internet at the first ranch we hunt on. I know we will for the Oryx hunt. Jim will be taking video of our hunts for his YouTube Channel I forgot to order my side shot to record my hunts 😔 so much on my plate with work and Holidays that it slipped my mind!! I'll be Jim's camara man. I hope we get some good footage.

  Take care Fellas

Hola Fellow Airgunners, sorry for such a late update on my hunt with Jim Chapman. First off I'd really like to thank Jim for taking time out of his busy schedule to hunt with me here in Tx.

First hunt was in Roosevelt Tx on the Exotic hunt, Jim busted a very nice Auodad but we never recovered it. That country is so thick, once that animal got into the heavy brush we had no blood trail to follow. Reviewing the video the shot was as perfect as anyone could do. Thru the vitals, vid showed perfect double lung even possible perfect heart shot! We searched the hills, brush, and draws for 2days after the shot. The Badger with 186gr HP at 35-40yds was a complete pass thru I'm sure!!
My hunt was a Mouflan Ewe at 71yds, the Extreme .457 did a complete pass thru with a 280gr HP from Mr. HollowPoint traveling at 980fps out of the muzzle. No video for this hunt Jim's equipment was giving us fits. But, we had a blast!!!

We traveled 3hrs to Fort Stockton here we picked up Dad. Headed out to my deer lease. The Rancher Lea Daggett had spotted the wild herd of goats that pass thru the neighboring ranches from time to time. We suited up the following morning and took out to chase these wild goats! Well.......many ppl might think oh it's a goat a domesticated animal. Lol WRONG!!!!! Those who hunt feral hogs understand these are unbranded or no ear tags for a reason!!! They belong to no one!!! They cross from ranch to ranch and have done so for many many years. My Grandparents hunted these Chivos Ladinos in the '30's thru the 60's while Grandpa was foreman out there. After using the wind to our favor and it was windy guys we worked up within 60yds. Jim busted a nice Billy dropping him on the first shot, but these animals are tough!!!! It got up and took off, we couldn't get up close enough for a kill shot. Finally it gave Jim an opportunity while it trotted directly in front of Jim at 50plus yards Jim did a Babe Ruth shot!!! Yes he called the off hand shot, Thru the neck into the brain POW!!!!! Thru the neck into the BRAIN!!!! Lol it was picture perfect! Goat dropped dead in its tracks!!!!
When I cleaned that goat, both lungs were destroyed and filled with blood!! The chest cavity was full of blood, just to show the strength of a Spanish Goat. After cleaning it, my dad slow cooked the hind quarters in the oven slowly for 4-5hours, the meat just fell off the bone. Dad roasted some jalapeño and tomatoes and made some chili macho (salsa) potato salad and tortillas. We ate like Kings and honored our hunt and animal. For the next three days we were unable to find that herd again with Billy's and younger stuff to do a hunt with the Recluse and Arrow (Airbolt)
We also were unable to make the Oryx, Hog and Coyote hunt. So many hunts and so little time!!

Predator hunt, we were set up to hunt Fox, not the coyote hunt. The fox hunt was on the same ranch with the goats. Coyote hunt and hogs were 100miles away. We called in a bunch of fox, Jim knocking down several with his Airforce Texan .308, he also rolled several jackrabbits with too. If anyone has done fox hunting at night you know how quick these little Greys move and ranges are hard to estimate. Lea the land owner was very impressed with Jim's shooting and with the Texan .308 also. Lea kept one of the fox and is getting a full body mount. This particular fox came in hard and we knew the exact range where he stopped 60yds!!! Pow!!!! Right thru the ear holes!!!! Yes lol it was crazy no bullet hole, the 116gr Mr. HP slug cleaned the wax out if his ears!! Lol guys in one ear out the other. I've never seen that before!! We had a Blast even though we had video issues. I was able to see a great side of Mr. Chapman, where he took the time to get to know my Father and have great conversations with Dad and everyone there. My Father really liked El Señor Chapman, I think Jim liked my Fathers cooking too!!!

As for me I had a great time enjoying to hang out with one of Airgun Hunting True Pioneers, listening to his detailed African Hunts, his thoughts on certain subjects and Airguns. Just listening and conversing with a friend. I used my Kral Jumbo .25 from Mr. Troy Hammer, let me tell you. I was so impressed with this gun that it's my main .25 at the moment. I rolled jackrabbits out to 75yds easily I love this gun. Hi shot count and ACCUARCY to spare!! Was unable to get a fox with get but I will soon!!

I hope I explained most of our trip and our fun! Guys, Airgun hunting is a blast and can't wait to see if Tx really allows it in 2018deer season. If so I think Jim and I will be chasing a Tx Muledeer
  Take care Fellas

Valente, sounds like one and all had a blast! I saw Jim’s vids of him taking a 40lb hog with his .22 Brocock Compatto and a 60lb’der with his Bantam hi lite in .22....he is a phenomenal hunter! I’m sure you’ll get a Fox with your Kral soon :)

Jim and Mr. Randall thank you.  Yes sir gonna stay on those fox!! I want to have a full body mount for my office too!! But, has to be an Airgun fox!!! In two weeks hitting them again!! My Dad and myself will be out there chasing them. So, les see if we can put one in the taxidermist shop!!!

Forgot to mention that Jim knocked out jackrabbits with that Bantam .22 also. That's a sweet shooting little Carbine!!! I own the Compatto .22 so we had both guns out there.

Thank you Fellas

It sounds like you all a fantastic time even though you weren't able to get in all the hunting that you want to.  6 days that you were hunting probably just wasn't enough time to do it all.

Mr. Wayne, 6 days was no where enough time that's for sure! I believe next year it will be a little more with in a closer circle. Keep everything with in a 100miles instead of 300miles! Tx opening up to Airgun Game hunts will really make it much easier to take a deer size animal. I plan on taking Jim on a Mule deer or Whitetaill hunt oh let's not forget the elusive Javalina. I'm not sure if a Mulie has ever been taken with an Air Rifle on video. If Tx allows this then we will concentrate on the Mule Deer until it's harvested. Spot and Stalk for this hunt, I'm not much of a blind hunter. I have hunted in a blind many times but, the spot and stalk is such a challenge and LOVE the great feeling when you have success.
Take care Brother Man

Hola Señor Tomas!! Muchas Gracias!!! Hey Tom, thank you sir!! We had a blast and my Dad enjoyed himself too. We lost my Mom 8-3-17 so my Dad has been a little lost, I spend as much time as possible with him. Jim really listened to Dad and made all of us feel like we were all family. Which we Believe that in God's Eyes we are all Brothers!!
The Hunts were so much fun and enjoyable.  Thank you for your kind words.
Hey Mr. Tom, not sure if you are a quail hunter but this Saturday we chased them and got our limits. On a 4x4 Suburban with a 8' tall Hi Rack. We find the covey and chase and shoot, it's a very hard hunt. A lot of brush, shooting from the Rack we were clipping mesquite trees throwing our pellets off course, shooting thru brush, dodging prickly pear, and ocotillo. Wound up switching to 6shot and a full choke to blow thru the heavy brush. The 7.5shot and modified choke was not putting the birds down. (No Airgun was used to hunt quail only shotguns were used for hunting the quail)
   Take care Brother Man

Chacho....Up Here in Minnesota, we don't have much, in the way, of Your Type of Quail.     What we do have is Ruffed Grouse , Sharp Tailed Grouse, Gray Partrige, Spruce Grouse and all four are in the Quail family.      I have hunted the above four Grouse for over 50 years. We also have Woodcock, Wild Turkey and Phesant. I have hunted them as-well.    As for Big Game we have Black Bear and Whitetailed Deer.    Our Moose population has mostly died off due to disease and we have a very small Elk herd.     I hunted Whitetail and Black Bear for 50 years too.    I still do a little big game hunting, when my sons can get away from work and go with me but mostly I do a lot of small game hunting these days.  I retired at age 65 in 2015.  Tell Your Father HI from Me, I'm another old guy. ;D ( I turn 70 this year )             Chacho...I am very Impressed that You Honor your father.    That has become uncommon in this modern day and age. .

My Best Wishes & My Best Regards to Your Father.

The Rancher is offering cow elk for $800 ea so God Willing we will have a freezer full. Going for an Airgun Kill, the Extreme .457 should put one down within 75yds and in if not possible the good old 30-06 will Gitter done!! I really enjoy teaching my Grandsons to hunt, the respect for the animals hunted. How to clean and cook what you harvest.

Thank you Gentlemen and take care.
