Title: SMH Gauntlet magazine stuck in the breach. Fix?
Post by: nashtx on December 29, 2017, 06:33:24 PM
My first venture into PCPs went pretty well up unto today.
Ive been careful with the bolt on my Gauntlet .177 as it's still clunky trying to make sure to cycle properly. There must be a pellet hung somehow and the bolt will not go forward and the magazine will not pop out. Looked at some of the marauder fixes but there is no clearance to get a blade through and Im not sure Im comfortable doing that any way. Im wondering if I should send it back for a repair or just tear it down and fix it myself although I have somewhat limited tools and skills. Any insight from the experienced folks is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried putting a cleaning rod down the barrel and tapping it lightly?  Sounds like you have a double feed (2 pellets in the breech/barrel).  Tapping lightly may help knock the second back into the magazine so you can remove it.  Then close the bolt and fire it to dislodge the first pellet.  Safety Reminder:  Be sure the safety is engaged when tapping the rod in the barrel!

Good idea. Ill probably use a small wooden dowel so that I don't risk any damage. The only other option is to break apart the magazine and hopefully remove the pellets. Thanks for the input.

I did a double feed on my Gauntlet .177 without me knowing it. The rifle won't fire. So I got my .22 cleaning rod, and set safety on. Lightly pushed the .22 cleaning rod, and 1 pellet came out after the other. What sight of relief when it started shooting normal again.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks back on my .22 Gauntlet. I pulled the bolt back, but not far enough to cock the gun the first time. It fed a pellet as designed. . I pulled the trigger and nothing happened. I assumed I did not cock it so I repeated the action, unknown to me, feeding another pellet but this time it had resistance moving fully forward. I stopped and tried to remove the magazine. No luck. I thought for a bit and determined I had a few options. I could push back with a cleaning rod, which I did not have, destroy a magazine or just force the second pellet. I opted for the last option because I was in the middle of nowhere and wanted to continue shooting. It was slow going and some force later that I got the bolt down and locked. I was nervous because I was not sure the gun would expel both pellets, not knowing what they looked like in there. I pulled the trigger away from me and saw both pellets flying out at what looked like 300fps. I verified no damage was done by checking zero on the scope. All was well. I would not do that again though. I carry a cleaning rod with me now. Glad you were able to get it cleared. If all else fails, you may be able to do what I did, but I don't recommend it. It was a bad decision on my part, but was able to finished my shooting.

That happened with my .22 Gauntlet but only when I was shooting hollow points.  Round head pellets load smoothly.  I used the wooden rod trick to drive the 2nd pellet back into the magazine.

Take a wooden dowel, OR a magic marker. Get your hammer out.
Pull your bolt all the way back.
Now wack the haell  out of the magazine toward the side that it pops out until it
Sheers the head or part of the head off the second pellet that has it jammed up.
Then push a cleaning rod down the barrel to make sure all is cleared out.

This is the fix, Believe it or not.
Learn from this and dont double load anymore.

I pushed hard enough on the magazine that it sheared off the head of the lodged pellet.  Both pellets were able to be pushed out of the breach with the small wooden dowel. Loaded the magazine with three pellets and cycled the bolt to fire each. No issues. Put the Cat Eye scope back on and wouldn't you know it, nearly dead on. I count myself lucky and will be much more deliberate (and careful) cycling the action. Thanks for the help guys.

Had the same problem with my 22 cal.  Used a cleaning rod to push the pellets out.
