Title: Daystate Regal for Field Target - Why/Why Not???
Post by: Gear_Junkie on December 24, 2017, 09:42:40 AM
I'm still throwing around the idea of a PCP for FT.  I have been doing research for months on the pluses and minus of all the main players.  I like the Regal best based on looks, size, ease of working on, LW barrel, and build quality.  Based on what I've read, I think I can get about 60 very consistent shots at 15fpe, which is just enough for a match.  So I'm ok with the gun not having a regulator.  The only thing I wish it had is a sidelever.

My question is - am I missing something?  One of the main reasons that I ask is because I don't see/hear of these used at matches very often.  Even at large matches, it doesn't show up in the equipment list very often.

Thanks!

I've had three Daystates, and have kept a Regal XL in .22 cal.  I agree they are absolutely handsome rifles (probably the prettiest PCP I own), and handy to use, too.

I've seen two people use Regals to good results in FT (even a State Championship).  Our multiple State Championship and Nationally ranked OPEN Class shooter here in Texas has shot with a (regulated) Daystate Grand Prix for many years.  But you are right, not many Regals are used on a regular basis.

The reason I have only the Regal remaining is that I found the other Daystates not to be as accurate as advertised.  Both of those were .22 cal, and very picky concerning the one or two pellets they would shoot well.  I suspect that a Regal in .177 cal might not be as picky, and may be more accurate.  But I also suspect that the lightweight rifles (like the Regal, CZ200s, others) make them less accepted than heavier airguns that some consider easier to control.  Old wives tales, probably, but who knows?

All that noted, if you like the Regal and want to give it a try, by all means do so.

Thanks for the info Bob!

Zack,
Nice guns to be sure

Fred B who shoots with us monthly just came home with a new .177 regal picked while in Arizona at the Nats.  Fred shot it at the clubs year end match with very good success inspite just weeks of working with it.
* If you would like to get in contact with Fred & speak to him about it ? drop me a PM & will forward his phone #

As too your original inquire & why-for so few regals show up at FT matches, IMO comes down to being a lighter gun therefor more challenging to get the wiggles settled down & shot count sweet spot on filling.
That said .. A VERY Capable gun that could serve you well at FT & Light field duty.

the daystate has what it takes to be competitive. i bet if you vise it it can repeatedly put its chosen pellet inside a 40mm circle, which is your KZ at 55 yards. now, you are not a vise or a bench, and the daystate does not have all the adjustments to make it easy to be repetitive in your position. other guns do come with it and that is why you see them used more often. But the regal is capable in the right capable hands. I sported a daystate harrier for 2 seasons. it did ok. but i used it for HFT. i also bet a steyr is not as good as a field gun as the regal... horses for courses... but you can use the regal for FT.

i know use a springer for HFT.

Thank you for the insight guys!  Great info to think about...

And I would be using it for HFT - I should have clarified that in my OP.

To echo Scott, Fred B. shot with me at the last Concord match and was lethal with his Daystate. He shot HFT and just about cleaned the course.  He's very talented, so YMMV?

Thanks Martin.  Fred is an animal with both a PCP and a spring gun!  He is always one of the people that I am chasing.
