Title: my airmax CM1 bullpup Build thread ( the start anyway)
Post by: Rob M on December 23, 2017, 11:10:15 PM
Well , ill let the pics explain.. Ive had a rough idea of where things are going.. still have quite a bit of work to do with kydex side panels , relieving the trigger area, not to mention sanding , painting , a shroud, possible Hpa drop block , and the list goes on.. Lotta delays along the way , and I'm betting it will be after the holidays before I get further.. I think the gun looks better in person , but I never claimed to be a photographer.

don't know if it will all be chronological .. But its been a few weeks with shipping delays and blowing the belt on my mill

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4635/25384582968_6bf71f3fe6.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/EF9C8A)20171215_131321 (https://flic.kr/p/EF9C8A) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

putting a 875 hole through 4 inches was fun ..

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4638/38375127455_4f060c0ef3.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21t5yqx)20171213_164233 (https://flic.kr/p/21t5yqx) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

so was hogggin the trigger hole

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4596/39251310921_64f8ca8571.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22Nvef2)20171215_140328 (https://flic.kr/p/22Nvef2) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

I guess at this point , you can see where this was going .. both barrel and airtube needed to make a complete pass through

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4645/39222764612_9c0fde09dd.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22KYVqh)20171222_111117 (https://flic.kr/p/22KYVqh) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

lots of sanding and breaking edges in my future..The trigger group needed a relief for future trigger linkage

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4591/27475327239_344ee42f50.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HRUeyB)20171221_153537 (https://flic.kr/p/HRUeyB) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

after this there was a third hole added ( .437) where my trigger piston assembly would be installed.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4732/39189613182_47fd2620b3.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22H41DU)20171222_072340 (https://flic.kr/p/22H41DU) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

the toiling continued.and the trigger needed to be sorted.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4727/39222775352_4c0d282731.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22KYYBs)20171222_115747 (1) (https://flic.kr/p/22KYYBs) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

this is the linkage rod, 1/8th brass which needed to be theaded to connect to the trigger piston
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4692/39192747112_7ea5e33b83.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22Hk5gb)20171222_102032 (https://flic.kr/p/22Hk5gb) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

Now I was cooking with gas, weaver rail completed ..the goal was to get the main reviever done , but I also needed to keep a square reference point which I decided would be the trigger guard area.. So that wont be reduced to the grip width till a later date

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4726/39192769942_f885f17f9b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22Hkc3N)20171222_102121 (https://flic.kr/p/22Hkc3N) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

naturally I needed some sort of trigger.. the trigger is riding in a slot on the piston I mentioned earlier that's threaded to the brass rod

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4683/39223352562_4dab46f43a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22L2Wcm)20171222_113854 (https://flic.kr/p/22L2Wcm) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

in this pic , I shorted the valve retention screw, and really need an rc ball bearing but got the trigger working pretty smooth.. Need to lube the channel in which the piston rides, and adjust the offset of the trigger blade.. Its never ending lol

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4595/39251741381_61610377b9.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22NxrcK)20171222_151645 (https://flic.kr/p/22NxrcK) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

I guess when I started , I imagined this all happening in 1 day.. the amount of work on the main receiver alone is more than a project

So I started working rearward,.,. the rear tube plug was replaced with turned down 1 " aluminum , flats on both sides for later mounting locations for the kydex.. and the one main post that goes through the cap , up into the breech locking the entire rear end together making the stock super rigid

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4682/27476229639_9a7f7c6d04.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HRYRPe)20171223_174026 (https://flic.kr/p/HRYRPe) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

it just keeps going , hope you like pics, this may be excessive.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4639/38374685235_4edb65b522.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21t3hY4)20171223_193340 (https://flic.kr/p/21t3hY4) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

so next is the black kydex side panels , mexed with 1/16th aluminum plate guarding the linkage/... More fine tuning and adjustment on trigger.. sanding painting , god knows what else.. feel free to share thoughts.. probably be after new years before I have more poics

thanks David , if I counted the time I could have bought an Indy lol.. otherwise , 99 bux so far.

as a side note for people messing with airmax guns , some tape on those tiny tiny trigger pins goes a long way while working , when they fall out , good luck finding them (-'

Time is relative, the real pleasure is a finished project of your own design that works, which I'm sure it will. Very nice and rewarding project.

+1 on the tape for the trigger pins!

minor update , now keep in mind this will be mostly covered by the kydex side panels.. so most likely all that will be seen is the bottom grill.. I'm certainly no sheet metal fabricator/ bender, so this took half the day

anyway, time to do some work on the main receiver, add a shroud /ldc .. and shape the kydex which is something ive never done..

started cutting and mounting the kydex panels /./. they still need to be heat gunned and formed around the gun ..

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4644/27543236239_6fb390c9e2.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HXUhxr)20171226_164529 (1) (https://flic.kr/p/HXUhxr) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

also did some chamfering around the trigger , much smoother/.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4687/38612913784_42c6783bd7.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21Q6h1Q)20171226_121251 (https://flic.kr/p/21Q6h1Q) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

anyway , I don't like the kydex as is , but maybe after its heat formed I will.. I figured having it mounted will create the most accurate results as far as forming goes.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4639/27543340739_15ba5b1705.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HXUPBa)20171226_165843 (https://flic.kr/p/HXUPBa) by murphyrobert9 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/56743574@N07/), on Flickr

don't be too harsh , if you have an idea about slotting or making the kydex fancier , share ! after this the receiver will go off to poor mans powder coating .

Very, very impressive, Rob!
Are you building this with a working drawing or design (missed it, if you said somewhere)?
Just wondering... I know some people that don't need one. Thanks... and that has a serious cool-factor to it  8)

Thanks Wyo.appreciate it and hoping to start paint when the sun comes up.. No , I didn't really have a plan , I just knew I wanted to bullpup the cm1 pistol.. Then , I stared at pictures of the RTI priest a couple nights, and decided I really wanted to machine the " manifold " from one block of aluminum as opposed to using 2-3 separate pieces. So I actually started the project twice since initially , I was content with multiple pieces..

Amazing. I don't think I could drill a hole unless I drew a circle first  ;D ... nice going, keep it up but don't rush... especially near the end.

VERY NICE cm1 !..looks 27 inches or so

Might do an lw barrel first, we shall see. painting and sanding and forming the kydex first .. now I also think I need a compact scope lol..But yes, an RTI priest was the inspiration ( ripoff of the FX design

a profound irony of these projects, is you were so excited to get this far, and almost disappointed it will be done soon

From one addict to another, I know exactly what you mean  ;D
The only cure for the post-project hangover is... another project!...haha
But let the paint dry first. Seriously, you did a great job and it looks terrific! thanks-

Hi, Rob. I just found this thread. I guess I don't get out much. I really like the creative work that you've done with the machining. If you covered up the printing I'd never identify the gun as having been a CP-1. It would make a nice mantle piece!

Rhett, that's a strong possibility and the picture in my head was based on a HPA tank conversion
Can't wait for it to evolve with a CF tank and become "Rob Mpact". Great project
