Title: Morning Coffee Coyote
Post by: tejon on November 26, 2017, 09:46:08 PM
So I go to the check on the farm and tune my at44 due to some barrel work. I was having my coffee when the coyote shows up from about 80yds away, I'm inside the truck as the wind was chilly, and he is accustomed to this truck apparently because he started making his way towards the truck.

I'm saying to my self, "nah, he is not coming this close" but... hey... here he comes. And this morning I decided to leave my .22lr coyote-buster at home, AND, I am with no pellets in the mag and no air in the cylinder the at44 has.... and the coyote keeps coming.

He starts munching on something about 30-35 yds away, so I think "screw it, if he catches me, so be it..." and I start fumbling inside the truck to put the second air cylinder on the rifle, which is holding about 120 bar, and put 3 baracuda hunters in the mag.

Quietly, I open the door and position myself on the hood of the truck, put the crosshairs on the heart-lung area, he keeps still, and I let go.

Thud.... bark....

The dog circled once on his tracks trying to find what bit him on the side, and then the blood starts coming from the mouth... he quietly goes down. One shot. .22 at44 with Baracuda Hunters. I put another on the head when he was down just to make it faster for him. But one shot at 35yds... I'm still amazed....

Sometimes everything comes together and you make a great shot on a yote at close range and drop him on the spot!
Good job with the follow-up shot just to end it quickly.

Thank you screwwork.

I agree... I wasn't even thinking on hunting... just wanted to tune my at44, and it all came together.

I like coyotes... I think they're beutiful and gracious. But I have 3 on my property and they've been destroying the plastic irrigation hoses for my pecan trees....

Aluminumfetish, you bet! It started pumping the moment I got off the truck...

Ranchibi, thanks... I hope the coyotes get the message... I have a trail cam set up and I know there's at least one more...

Nice shooting with your AT44!  The best opportunities come when you least expect them, especially with coyotes.

What do you figure the muzzle velocity was with 120 bar?

Many thanks guys...

Harry... I think right at, or a little shy of 900fps....

Nomadic .... I hear ya... the B. Hunters are awesome... I just wished they didn't lose so much energy at 100 yds... they are, so far, the best out of my rifle at that distance.... nailed 2 black birds at 105 a while ago...

Great job, Frank, keeping calm and placing the shot precisely.  You told the story well...I know it must've seemed like an eternity between the time you decided to make the attempt and when you actually squeezed the trigger.
