Title: Looking for Fun Shoot 2018 location
Post by: ezman604 on November 26, 2017, 04:40:36 PM
As the title states, we are looking for a good alternate place to hold the GTA Annual Gene Curtis Fun Shoot/Airgun Show for 2018. There have been some issues with the Gallatin County Fairgrounds and Hargis can no longer host there. He is checking with other state fairground managers to see if we can use their facilities instead. Just in case, we need to start looking for an alternate location to hold our event. If I had a few more acres, I'd certainly host it here. Since I have to take vacation and pull a trailer full of supplies, I need a location within about a 6 hour drive of me.
If you have or know of a possible location to support our event, please post and let me know. We will not have a definite answer about another KY fairgrounds until sometime in January.
Please let me know if you can help.
Thanks and as always....
SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!

Well,
My selfish suggestion would be like most other airgun events and move it to Phoenix.
But then again I am biased since Rio Salado is an hour from my house. LOL

But that does not fit your 6 hr drive window more like 24 hr drive window.

Email sent Chad. And I have received a few other responses. But folks as a reminder, do no reply to an email notification of a post on GTA. Nor reply to an email notification that you have a private message waiting. Please come to the forum via the link in the email notification to respond.
As one other FYI, I need to keep the travel to within a 6 hour one way journey from central West TN. Michigan is too far, Arizona is out of the question and Florida is most likely too far also. Please keep in mind that mainly myself and my wife, along with David, Rich and a few other staff, have to travel to set this thing up on our dime. NOT forum money. We do need and use forum funds for the event itself. So we have to keep it close enough for me to be able to travel it with the vacation time we can swing.
Thanks again for ALL recommendations and suggestions!!!!

David, Rich, and a few others do VERY long trips just to get to Kentucky.
DEz needs to be close for the reasons he has stated. Me? I'm like David and Rich and a few others.
I'll make the drive no matter where or when. I checked my area and it is beyond the 6 hour limit.
I could maybe get a shooting range but there is no local/on site camping so I'll not go further with it.

I would love to have it here at my house. I had a shoot here last spring and it turned out to be quite fun. Going to have another here in April.  If you want to have it here let me  know and it will happen. Check out the Southern Indiana Spring Fling thread and see what you think.

Dave,

Is Monroe, La outside of your driving range?

The sheriff there has a beautiful range that he has made available for public events. Don't know about the cost. I have a friend who is a friend of the sheriff. He has hosted several Lion's Club events there using the training room. It can seat at an estimated 150. It has a multi level 5 stand that could be turned into a Ft range (I believe) plus a number of covered shooting lanes. Also, they have held several major archery tournaments. Lots of room, lots of parking. Lots of local hotel rooms. Don't know about camping.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll contact Lion Bob to see if sheriff is interested. Dates and the kike would be helpful. Also, estimated head count.

BTW, knowing Lion Bob, he will want to turn it into a Lion's Club event, which might not be a bad idea since as a sanctioned Lions Club event, it could be covered by the LCI insurance policy.

Check out VWOUTDOORSMEN.info east of Van Wert Ohio. How many shooters do you expect? We have a large campground next door and several hotels in the area. I have a club meeting the first Wednesday in December. We just put in a new very wide 50 yard backstop and can shoot up to 200 yards. Let me know ASAP if this will work. We are located on US 30 between Lima, Ohio and Ft Wayne, IN.
I am a past president of the club.

Thanks Jim, that sounds like a good possibility. It's just over 6 hours but doable. And I'm sure Rich would like being the one with the shortest drive for a change. LOL
The date we decided on was 18-20 May so as not to coincide with Mother's Day and because we were in KY, not to coincide with the KY Derby. So, we have some leeway on the date also if needed.
Thanks again, go ahead and see what the powers to be have to say. We are a non-profit bunch and this is just an annual get together like a family reunion. A fun shooting family reunion. LOL
I don't want to commit to anything just yet but please keep the ideas and possibilities coming. Let's make this one the best ever!!!!

Hey Jimmy, thanks for the invite. I will definitely keep this one in mind too. You are about an hour closer than the KY shoot for me. We would expect anywhere form 75-125 participants. And would need a rather long covered shooting area. There would need to be some logistics done for sure. But I'll look at the thread and see ahead of time what we might be able to do.
Thanks again!!!!

We have here around central Florida a 20 acres shooting range of which I am a member (https://www.facebook.com/bigbangranch (https://www.facebook.com/bigbangranch)). They will probably like such Air Gun Show as they are trying to bring more people and improve it. Have no idea how much they could ask for such an event, but as you said Florida is too far.

Dave... we need to talk..
I did some checking around and we have an Ag Center within a mile of our house. They host rodeos and such there. I spoke to them on the phone and they were very receptive to what we want to do. I got some info and a quote. You have my number.... give me a call. In the meantime... here's and overhead shot. Check the lower right hand corner for the scale.
EHHH... can't post the pic....
Just gimme a call... lol

Anything within 6 hours of Tennessee is just too far out for me to travel.
But If you could stand to shoot out to 1100 yards with several snow capped peaks in view, I could hook you up.
Range closed May 1- mid July for cattle grazing.
Only eight minutes from Three Forks MT.

Hargis got back with me today. No joy finding us a fairgrounds in southern KY. They are all booked that time of the year. So, back to square one. We will be taking a look at the sites folks suggested to see if any are workable. And if any of you have suggestions for a site within a 6 or so hour drive from central West TN, I'm open to suggestions!!!

I posted on Rimfire Central and never heard back from them as to whether it is a good or bad idea. I like it myself. Could be educational for all of us. I posted over there just now as a follow up.
I have also sent a message to the good folks at PA. Will see if their facilities are available and this is doable for them. For YEARS I've been trying to get their staff to attend. With the exception of Tyler, we have had no PA staff able to attend before. So, let's take it to them? LOL
Will see.
I'm also keeping the Southern Indiana Spring Fling in mind as well as Monroe, LA. I prefer the short travel to Horseshoe Bend, AR but the idea of holding the event where we can get support and meet the folks from PA. That excites me.
:)
Will see what pans out.....

As with planning any major GTA event (like this and the Wounded Warrior project) it reaches a point of frustration. I'm at that point. LOL
Nothing is panning out for us as of yet. I will not give up and will keep plugging away. The guys over on the rimfire forum have gone silent. They first said it sounded like a good idea to combine events but then fell silent when I wanted input and logistics. Oh well....
Now waiting on some word from the Monroe, LA location. I have no clue if the venue can even offer the facilities needed for us. Hopefully will get some word soon.
I would hate to have to postpone the 2018 event but....
Will post when I find out anything.

As far south as La, I'm thinking we'd lose some of the beloved old faithfuls from the Midwest......the Ramada gang.
Hopefully we can find something a little more centrally located.  It's worth the flight imo...I just won't be flying my guns this time.

From Dez's home to there is 10+ hours IF you miss all rush hours.
With a trailor? I doubt he'd do it in 11.
I'd bet 12+ hours easy.

I don't know what is really needed for the shoot. But I still offer my place. It has room to shoot just about anything you want, A 24' X 40' barn heated and airconditioned, Kitchen, and bathroom. Room to camp at the barn, or I have a house up the road with a pond in the back yard and plenty of room to camp up there. The camping would be primitive. Google map 2900 West County Rd. 750 south Commiskey In. and that is the barn. 2290 west county road 750 south Commiskey In. is the house. It is only a half mile up the road from the barn.  All I ask is you let me know a few days before so I can make sure it is mowed and ready.
We are having the Spring Fling there the second weekend in April. Come check it out then if you would like. It will be a lot of fun.

A couple of primary things needed are a good (safe) place for setting up targets and shooting.
A place under cover for setting up the raffle items, and for vendors is needed, then a way to set up for prepping the meal offered to those attending.....my experience is that it's the mid-day meal on Saturday.

MANY thanks Jimmy. Take a look at the last Fun Shoot event and see the setup that works for us.

Liz about summed it up well. We need a safe shooting line (preferably covered) that is at least 100' wide. Even with our setup the last 2-3 years our firing line was still a bit short during the peak attendance times. Some of us tried to accommodate others by giving up or sharing our firing line space. I for one allowed others to freely use my table, chairs and shooting accessories while I milled around and took care of the event business.
Anyway, we would need adequate restroom facilities, a covered and preferred enclosed area for door prizes and vendor setup. And a place to serve the food. I have a 30' canvas as well as a 10' pop-up. I have 6 tables and a few chairs I could bring. We might be able to make it work but I'm just a bit concerned with the parking arrangements for everyone plus those driving RV's. The fairgrounds was a fantastic venue for us, I just wish we still had that available. I guess we have been spoiled with what we had for the last 3 years. :)
I'm still talking with the folks over on RimfireCentral to see if we can make it happen in Horseshoe Bend, AR. It's at or next to the expo center and might be more capable of handling our bunch. There is an airport right there also. Looking at the area, it appears to be a sportsman's paradise. Rich and others would appreciate the abundance of fishing holes.
Will keep pushing forward and working out the logistics. MANY thanks to all for the help, advice and recommendations.
More to follow.

I will also need a spot to rest out of the sun after being poisoned by my so called friends with White Lighting Lol...  Not falling for that one this year!  Seriously though Liz nailed it. And being prepared for inclement weather that can pop up is a must so a indoor area is almost a must.

Have you looked at Natchez Trace state park here in Tn.  We stayed there with our church group three years ago. They have a rifle and pistol range wide enough and long enough to work for us. Also tent and RV camping, just spread out a bit. There is also a lodge building that can be rented for the rest.

Hello all....

I’m the fellow who has been in contact with Dave about a shoot/Show combination with rimfire guys in Horseshoe Bend, AR. We tried to make contact on the rimfirecenteal message board to no avail. I tried emailing him directly and that didn’t work.....so here I am trying it here in your camp.. ;D I hope you’ll have me gracefully.

Since this is a complex topic with many concerns and questions on both sides, I’d like to make myself available here to maybe help out in a decision.

I am the owner of the Expo center in HSB and also the property owner that can host a firing line adjacent to the Expo grounds. Camping is very possible and very private.  All of this is within walking distance of the Expo.

Anyway, thanks for the invite here and the opportunity to talk with all of you in a direction to make our hobbies the best they can be.

Eric

I'm excited about the possibility of us combining events. It would be fun and educational for us all, I'm certain!!!
Drop me a message and we can exchange phone numbers. I can be reached or can call you any weekday after 5:30pm central and just about any time on the weekend.
Again, welcome. I'm looking forward to speaking with you very soon!!!!
SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!

I can't get anyone from NT to reply to my messages. Crazy thing is the message went to The American Gun Owners Alliance in PA? I have the phone number for the park office, I will call them tomorrow.
I have place a poll about Horseshoe Bend, AR. I just had a great conversation with Eric and we were both feeling each other out as to what we need/want. We are still trying to figure out if this will work for all of us.
Any members close to Horseshoe Bend? Can maybe meet up with Eric and take a look for us? Might be a road trip this weekend for me and the better half.

Still researching but it's tough to find a location that I think we need to be comfortable and enjoy. And one that is within a suitable travel range for most. I guess we could just throw up canopies about anywhere and get by. But to have a really enjoyable event, there are certain things we need. I'm going to call Natchez Trace State Park today since my online messages are not being returned. We need more choices folks, this is tough. I need/would like to stay within roughly 6 hour drive from middle West TN. We need a shooting range of probably 200 yards long by roughly 100' wide. We need some indoor facilities for the raffle items as well as vendor setup. We need rest room facilities and would be a BIG plus to have a kitchen area. We need camping space. Some preferably with water, waste and power. It's tough to find....believe me.
Any other suggestions/recommendations/ideas you have PLEASE let me know.

I'm in for Horse Shoe Bend or Natchez for that matter.

Notes on Natchez: The rifle range (100 yards) will only allow for about 4 shooters and can NOT be used if people are on the pistol range. The pistol range has 10 lanes but only a few are under the covered bench area. They max out at about 25 yards. The parking area would only accommodate 10-15 vehicles without resorting to parking in the grass. There are no restroom facilities (save for the trees) or electrical service. I really enjoy shooting there but I do not think it will be satisfactory for the amount of people we would like to have. Link to the location below. The topography is deceiving from the satellite view. There is a steep hill that bottoms at the creek.

This is the basic inside view of tables from a past show set up. The stuff shown is auction items we had on consignment.
The gray doors on the left are his/hers restrooms. I have about 90+ tables and 120 chairs.

Here is a view of the camping area next to the lake which is next to the Expo. The dam of the lake is the walkway for campers to get to the Expo and shooting area. In the last picture overlooking the Dam, the west side of the Expo building can be seen.....these are pics I just took the other day. Everything would be nice and green by May. There is a walking trail around the lake too. We have a camp fire ring lakeside at the camp sites. The dam can be the firing line for all shooters. It overlooks a field with maybe 300+ yards clear..??

I believe the area near the top of the lake is the dam.

Thanks Jeff. I held off posting pictures because no decision has been made yet. We're still working out the details. We're trying to negotiate a combined event with the RFC folks to have a show at the same time. And also looking into combining events with the Malvern airgun show. So, there's lots to still discuss before committing.
I've also polled our vendors to see if they will make the journey to set up. I really need to hear from them, it is a major factor in moving forward with this venue.
Teresa and I plan a road trip next weekend to meet Eric and talk logistics.
More coming soon....

LOL
Not gonna put that many miles on Black Beauty Mark. But would make for an interesting drive. Turn a few heads I bet. LOL
Cost a small fortune in petrol too.  :o
Teresa and I plan on making the drive this weekend to visit with Eric and scope out the location. I'm excited to think of the prospect of having the Malvern airgun show folks as well as the RFC folks there too. It would give us a chance we have never had, to combine some events to all of our benefit!!! And also spread the word about modern airguns and the benefit of being part of the best forum family on the interweb.
I realize this would be quite a drive for many. But every event we have had will always pose a long drive time for some. I have made the 9-10 hour drive one way for a few years. Now that I am having to be the head muckidy muck, I want to 1) find a place suitable for a shorter drive time for me & Teresa and 2) try to make it more central so more folks have access to it. Horseshoe Bend, AR is getting as close to central USA as we have ever had before.

I really hope you will consider or reconsider attending if this winds up being our new venue. It's quite difficult to find a suitable location to fit our needs but there are some out there. We just need to brainstorm, research and find them. Will post back after our visit. Sorry for the delay this year!!!

I have to ask for permission from SWMBO. End of the school year is a tough time when there are tasks that if I do not do I get tied to the whipping post. :)

We may be the Best Western Roundy's this year. LOL
I'm looking at motel/hotels in the area and trying to get us a group discount code. Will see....and will personally scope them out this weekend too.
