Title: Tough ain't the word
Post by: bowdoc64 on November 22, 2017, 11:09:43 PM
I stalked through the low pines and I saw this big Squirrel on the ground head behind A tree burying something. About 20 yards off hand standing (something I not so good at) i squeeze and clearly think I miss. Squirrel does a little hop and takes off running with no I'll affect. It runs about 40 to 50 feet and stops next to a tree. Thinking it still alive I send another pellet and it missed but the Squirrel never moved. It's was dead to my amazement. Really makes me think one of the ones I hit last night were dead I just could not find because I could not see were it ran after it dropped. So how did she do it HN through the front right shoulder but she ran like nothing was wrong. When I cleaned one lung was hanging out the chest and the heart was wrecked. Huge hole in the chest. Crazy pellet exspansion.

Second one was less then 15 yards on a black walnut tree. Hit and dropped with zero movement. I should have had another it was barking and just when I located and got the cross hairs on it he must have sensed it and jetted. The HN exsteem really tore him up. Massive exit hole above the left shoulder

I told my wife that squirrels are armor wearing ninja ventriloquists with an invisibility cloak.  She looked at me like I was nuts....

It didn't help when I told her that if they weighed 200lbs everyone would hunt them.  But it's a pretty cool mental picture!  :D

I am certain squirrels have the ability to "angle a deflector shield" too.  ;)
In a toughness contest, they would win First Place, Second Place, and maybe tied for Third Place too.

Nice haul Drew! Looks like things are looking up for your hunts.

If squirrels were 200 pounds, I'd go into hiding... :'(

They might be a little perturbed at me.

Nice shooting! Seeing them skinned it doesn't look like those boogers have much meat on them to eat. Guess I won't bother with the grey squirrels in my yard because they are pretty scrawny. One thing I noticed is if you just look at the front arms of your squirrels, in human proportions they are built like Schwarzenegger!

When packaging for the freezer, each squirrel goes into a Ziplock bag individually.  That way, if I have a guest, I take out one bag for the guest and one bag for me.  (No waste and usually no left-overs.)

Good shooting Drew. Squirrels are like most other animals if you heart/ lung shoot them they will run until the blood stops flowing. The ones that are heart/ lung shot and drop had the pellet disrupt the nervous system instead of just a heart/ lung bleed out shot. A little high heart / lung shot will have energy placed into the spinal area and shots angled into or out of the shoulders or base of the neck will usually cause spinal disruptions as well. I usually dont go for heart/ lung shots on squirrels unless its going to hit front shoulders cause I hate to try and track where they will go. They seem to find holes quickly also making it hard to get the body.

I think your on point with that. Most behind the leg heart lung shots really do not put them down. Shoulder hit tend to slow them down if you miss the spine. I think I'm going to try more head and neck shots when I get the opportunity.

Absolutely Drew. They really do work well.
