Yesterday, I repeated my ritual look around the back yard before heading to work. I've realized they're coming into the yard a little earlier now, so I have to be out there to see them at all. An uptick in activity has indicated I would do well to be out there waiting for them to come into the property. So I had headed out to take a seat to watch the northwest corner of the property.
Well, she was already up and at it in the big pine tree in the northwest corner of my yard, right at the property line. And worse--she sees me and lays down, really low. One ear and an eye to shoot at... As much as I'd like to oblige, I'm not wanting to teach her anything she might be able to remember about air rifles should I flub this one, so I go to work.
Today, I head out even earlier to take a seat under the eave at the northwest corner of my house to try again. I'm not even to the chair yet and there's a squirrel jumping for cover directly north of me! Fortunately, he stops about 20' up a tulip tree to watch me. It's a 23 yard shot at a modest low angle. It pops him good and he hangs by a rear toe for a long moment before dropping into the brush.
I collect him and have a seat for my intended target....(see next post).
Later, probing the wound for the picture, I felt a lot of crunchy stuff, so I suspect a spine shot or something through the back of the brain case. Blood loss from the neck wound killed him pretty quick, I think. The shot hit just under and behind the left ear and exited right behind the right ear. Note the acorn in his mouth--it's been a while since I've seen that. He hadn't even started on it.
A little guy at 10 ounces. Taken with the R10 shooting the Benjamin hollow point (aka CPHP).
