I just got word that the Parks and Wildlife committee just passed the law for us to hunt all furbearers here in Colorado with an air rifle!
Oh yeah!!!
-
Congrats Joe! Looking forward to lots of hunting pics from you CO guys.

Awesome news Joe congrats. All small game are legal for airguns in GA with virtually no restrictions. Big game is next we hope.
-
Congrats Joe!
-
Congrats!!! Does there happen to be a min caliber? Thanks!
-
Congrats Papi Chango!!!

Congrats Joe! Maybe you and JSB can work together to bring us some new style hunting pellets. The polymags are awesome but a few of my rifles don’t shoot them well. Maybe a couple new options to try out? Enjoy your new law change, i know i am enjoying Kentucky including air guns for deer. Things look good for the future of our hobby

Sadly, Texas is pretty much a waste land for airgunners. Well, at least we can now finally hunt Rabbit and Squirrel now. (Never knew we couldn't LOL) ;D

It has already been legal for many years to use "Pellet guns and slingshots" "FOR SMALL-GAME MAMMALS" , as printed under the section titled "LEGAL SMALL-GAME HUNTING METHODS" on page 5 of the Colorado Small Game brochure. I always assumed this meant ALL small-game mammals. I never thought that a furbearer was NOT a "small-game mammal".
NOW after reading this post, I see in the Definitions section that "SMALL-GAME MAMMALS" are: "cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, jackrabbit, marmot, fox squirrel, pine squirrel, Abert's squirrel, prairie dog, Wyoming (Richardson's) ground squirrel".
The Colorado definition of "FURBEARERS" is: "mink, pine marten, badger, red fox, gray fox, swift fox, striped skunk, western spotted skunk, beaver, muskrat, long-tailed weasel, short-tailed weasel, coyote, bobcat, opossum, ring-tailed cat, raccoon".
The Colorado definition of "PELLET GUN" is: "handgun or rifle powered by compressed air or gas that is .177 caliber or larger and fires pellets".
Of course the Colorado small game hunting brochure also says under "LEGAL SMALL-GAME HUNTING METHODS" "FOR FURBEARERS": 1. Any rifle, handgun, shotgun, handheld bow or crossbow or live traps - limited to cage or box traps".
Isn't a pellet rifle a "rifle"? Notice it does not say "firearm"; it says "Any rifle". (EDIT): Oops, with more reading I answered my own question: I see they also define "RIFLE" as: "firearm fired from the shoulder with a rifled bore, at least a 16-inch or longer barrel and at least 26 inches in overall length."
By the way, WHEN does this new rule take effect? Typically these changes take effect the first of the new year after they are passed.

Congrats! All your hard work paid off. Here in NY we can hunt all small game that is legal to take with rimfire, so it always included furbearers.
Now many of us have to keep fighting for big game hunting with big bore.
Something tells me we 'll be seeing a lot more fur from CO in the Hunting gate very soon.

Thanks again all.
Hey Techie, it's already in effect. I am waiting for them to update it on the site under Regulations Chapter W-03. But the original wording was very confusing, that's why I wanted it to pass and make us legal. You ready to go out?
Joe

I'm already out. :D Thanks for working on this. I got them to change the minimum bullet weight for fall turkey hunting to 17 grains to allow the .17 HMR to be used this year, so I know what it takes to get a change like this through. Actually, the change you got through took a lot more work than the simple change I petitioned for.

Nice. My state is still on a 100 year old law so we can only use shotgun for Turkey :( What stinks is that turkeys walk through my backyard every year especially during the spring and fall seasons when they are chased out of the woods. I can't use a shotgun here due to the proximity of other homes (<500ft), and there is nothing I can do but watch them hang out in my yard for several hours (in my trees too) or walk by me 30 yards out.

Nice. Some guy in power probably read the request and thought: "Why the heck not?"

That makes me think of a good Seinfeld episode idea. Lol
