Title: Umarex Gauntlet .22
Post by: maraudinglizard on November 11, 2017, 08:01:35 PM
I received the Gauntlet Friday and had the chance today to do a full shoot with the gun. The gun came well packaged from LG Outdoors and Umarex. All the contents stayed in their intended shipping position. Air tank was empty, filled it up and had some leak down overnight and I did expect that to happen since being empty in shipping. Filled it again and it held. Put a Centerpoint 4x16 40mm scope on it. Used Crosman's Premier domed 14.3gr pellets for testing. Sighted in at about 12yds. Using the single shot tray, I did 3 shot series and all were mostly one holers until the scope was zero for me. Moved out to 30 yds and did 10 shot strings. Most were dime size. Then Moved out to 50 yds and kept the groups to about an inch. I got 65 shots for the first fill. Umarex states 60 shots on average. I am very pleased with this gun. I didn't have any issues with it. This gun is going to be a nice tack driver and hunter when it settles in.

Trigger is about 2.5lbs. on average.
Sound is 60 to 65 Db. It's quieter than my stock maruader.

Excellent! Even high end guns with regulators have a hard time achieving what the Gauntlet did in your graph.

Thanks Booger. I was surprised myself with the results. I shot that string all at one time, 50 shots non stop and came up with this. This gun has a lot of potential without a lot of fiddling and modifying. I am even more surprised that it shot the crosman premier domed pellet as well as it did.

I've been very interested in this rifle since it was first noised around.  In .177 it should make a good starter FT rifle and general use plinker, etc.  No telling when they'll become available here in Coffee Country, but you can bet they'll be running about twice what retail is up north.   ::)

Paul hope you get the chance to own one, they are really nice guns for the money. It is a heavy gun with a scope but manageable. Only having to fill once and shoot sixty times consistently is a plus with me, especially when hunting. The sling studs is another nice feature, throw on a nice sling and enjoy the walk in the woods.

Thanks, Kris!

Compared to my Nova, it'd be a lightweight!  ;D  ;D

Thanks Kris.  This certainly makes Gauntlet vs Urban vs Maximus for first PCP decision more challenging.....

Your Welcome, any of those are a good pcp to start with, it's how much of the darkside you want to fall into. ;)

The Maximus for sure - if you want a lightweight, handy singleshot.  I've not yet seen any Gauntlet vs Urban head to head comparisons yet.  They are, however, probably soon to show up.  Funny, haven't found ANY Urbans down here yet, which is odd since Gamo is a big player on this national air rifle scene.

The dark side I want to fall into you said it best - I'm looking for a good out-of-the-box shooter "without a lot of fiddling and modifying", can use pellets available at Walmart, Cabelas, or Academy, best trigger and accuracy knowing its an entry level gun. But not here to hijack your thread  ;D

The prices going back up on the Urban got me to have a second look at the Gauntlet. Considering the weight of the gun I can't find any advantage of owning one that my SynRod in .22 doesn't already give me. If I didn't already own the SynRod, the price might be the deciding factor. So, my choice became clear. Hold off until the price takes another dip on the Urban, pay the extra money or start looking for something else.
Well, I was settled for paying the extra money when another member contacted me with an offer to sell his Urban. Trying to work out the deal now. Either way... I will have my Urban.

Those are great shot strings!   The Gauntlet has great features - a bit heavy though.   But if more reports show such great ES, I may have to get one and suffer the weight.

The biggest advantage the Gauntlet has over the M-Rod and other entry level PCP's is shot count.  I got a very consistent 90 shots before the pellets started to drop at 35 yards.  Adding a larger 23ci bottle will probably cause that to climb to around 140 shots!  I can't do that with my M-Rod or any other PCP I own!

Shot count used to be a lot more important to me before I got a compressor so, I get that.

Joe Brancato has a cylinder that is longer that will fit the gauntlet. Give him a call. Keep in mind this make the gun a lot heavier than it is now.

Thanks Kris.  Is Joe's tank aluminum or carbon fiber?  I did see one on the link that looked like it would fit.  I ordered an aluminum 23 ci tank that's regulated to 1200 psi off AliExpress, it should be here in a few weeks.  I have no idea what it will weigh, but most of my shooting it paper targets from a bench, so another pound won't be that big a deal.

Bill, trust me, I am seriously in the market for a compressor.  Filling the 13 ci tank on the Gauntlet with a hand pump is a workout!  A 23 ci tank will be even worse!

From what I saw in the video he made it looked like aluminum. What came with the gun is plenty for me for shooting and hunting. Pumping is not an option with me when I own 5 scuba tanks and a dive shop that does free top offs. A booster pump is in the future for me just haven't decided which one yet.

Sweet!  The closest Dive Shop to me wants $10 for a top off on my tiny 90ci tank!  Thank goodness the local Fire Station is more generous, but I don't want to abuse them, so I won't bring my tank there more than once a month.  I only use it for my low volume 2000 psi guns.  I definitely need a compressor!

Maraudinglizard, thanks for taking the time and posting the info on your Gauntlet.  I’ve got a 22 Maximus that’s been awesome, but the Gauntlet seems like the King of PCP value.  Since I have 22, I’m holding out for the .25 Gauntlet.

You're welcome. I have the maxi in .177, it's main use is hunting. I switch between the marauder, disco, and maxi on occasion when squirrel hunting. The gauntlet has impressed me so far. Welcome to the GTA and good luck on your next purchase.
