Title: SPA Varmint Refinish
Post by: Rat Sniper (AKA: PaulT58) on November 05, 2017, 10:55:30 PM
Just finished refinishing my SPA Varmint today.  I went with a dark, rustic, tactical look on the Varmint.  The stain is black with a TruOil finish.  The Varmint is outfitted with a BSA Scope, Rocker1 LDC for stealth, and a green light to light up the varmints down range!  Here are some before and after pictures:

Super job Paul!! Loving the letters as well and the grain shows so nice now with that black stain! Super!

Rustic indeed. Nice. Really makes the wood pop and see the character, almost like seared tuna steaks or something.

Thank you for all the kind remarks!  I was really concerned how this would turn out using black stain instead of a wood tone stain. I also screwed up a bit by not doing one more finish sanding with a 320 grit paper over the entrance re surface. I had sanded some rough spots around the checkering with some 180’grit paper and failed to touch up those spots with the finer grit paper, but kinda glad I did now because it gives if a more rustic, Antique look.

I have run out of air guns with wood stocks, so I’m not sure what the next project will be. I might look into the option of an aftermarket stock for one of the Maximuses, or would that be Maximi?  Anyway, would a Discovery stock fit a Maximus with no modifications???

In my opinion that job you did really makes that gun look like a $1000 rifle. Beautiful!

Thanks Wes!  It would be tough selling it though, the buyer would have to have the initials PT!  Fortunately, the Varmint is a keeper, it does make it uniquely mine!

I need a new project, if you want yours done, just send it to me, pay shipping both directions, the rest is on me!

The offer stands, idle hand spend too much time browsing for air guns, the busier I stay, the less I spend!

Since both my SPA Rifles have had their stocks refinished, I thought I'd throw a quick before and after comparison of both my Varmint and Plinkster since I went two different directions with the finishes!  The Varmint has a black stain with TruOil finish and the Plinkster is a Tung Oil finish over the natural beech color...

Great pictures Paul, they both look great in their own way!
