Title: Van Gerven Marauder Regulator with Valve Issue
Post by: HPAJunkie on November 03, 2017, 10:53:30 AM
I ordered a regulator from airgun exporter Vincent Van Gerven and installed it at it's factory settings. The marauder is .22 cal and the best velocity I could get was 830 fps with 14.3 gr JSB's and 780 fps with 18.13 JSB's. It's already set to about 1800 PSI so I didn't want to adjust the pressure.

After doing some reading on the forums I found that people have been having better luck with their transfer ports opened up to .160" so I did that. I took the valve apart, drilled with a slight angle forward with a #22 drill bit and the drill bit cut the face of the seal seat. Oops.

Following what was done on this thread, https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=111416.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=111416.0)
I made a plug with o-ring, bored out the valve to fit the plug, inserted plug and redrilled the transfer port.

The valve seals and the transfer ports from valve to barrel are all drilled with the #22 drill bit now, but the velocity is way low now. I am thinking that I screwed up the valve, so would it be better to get a new high flow valve, or just keep tinkering with this one?

What high flow valves are recommended with regulated marauders?

Thanks,

I have no idea if there is a Plenum in that make of regulator.... but the lack of volume between the regulator and valve is, or at least was, a common mistake made by regulator manufacturers before they came to realize that the only air available to make the shot was that between the regulator and valve seat.... You need at least 1/2 cc per FPE or performance will be disappointing.... and 1 cc per FPE is better, if reservoir volume is not affected (like with a bottle gun)....

When the new ART/SS Valve is available, that would be a good choice.... However, if your regulator has no plenum volume, you need to address that first....

The regulator does have a plenum volume, but how much is unknown.  Others have had success with it by changing hammer springs and enlarging the transfer port/exhaust port. I went ahead and ordered a stock valve for a .25cal to see if that helps. If that solves the issue then I will know I messed up the valve and my modifications didn't work.

After the work done to get this marauder to shoot well I may have to save lots of pennies to get the FX Crown or FX Impact. I think they both look very nice and hear that they shoot very well, but $1700-$2k is a lot to save.
