Midway had this Model 95 Vortex QE .22 in their clearance section and when the price dropped to $117.81 for what they termed a "blemished rifle" I caved and bought it figuring anything that might be wrong with the stock, I can fix easily enough. I did send RAW a pm asking about his and how many shots he took before returning it and if it's his return, I'm kind of in the unique position of actually being able to sort out if it has cocking issues or not since I have no plans to return the rifle myself.
It got here today and as I was unboxing and unbagging it, I saw the dark marks on the butt of the rifle and was reminded of fellow member RAW and the pics he posted of his when he got it, then his thread on returning the rifle because he thought it was cocking harder than it should be.
I borrowed the pics from his thread and made composite pics of his rifle and the one I just got, mine is on top, his is on the bottom in both pics. Soooo, I personally think I have that same rifle now in my possession but thought i'd post the pics and see what everyone thinks. The other odd note is the stock doesn't have the MOD 95 SAS stamped just above the front checkering which has me curious when they stopped doing it. For reference, the build date on it is 05 17.

looks like the same one to me.....maybe ???
-
Maybe yours is one half of a set of identical twins ::) ::) It sure does look like the same stock maybe they took a good stock and swapped the action out
-
Looks the same to me Steve.
-
I did try cocking it and other then the usual Hatsan way nuderlubed metal rubbing noise which is easily fixed, the rifle so far cocks with about the same amount of pressure my 95 .25 and 87QE take so nothing wrong there and I'll definitely be putting it through it's paces over a chrony and with a scope.
If there's anything wrong with the rifle, I'll find it and post like always, but so far everything seems to be just the way it should...now I just need it to stop raining so I can go out and do some shooting....
-
With wood grain being as unique as fingerprints Id say that is at least the same stock.
Serial number would identify it as the same action.
Did you ask RAW if he knew his guns serial number?
I have photos of all of my guns numbers for insurance reasons. ;)
On another note I often wonder who ended up with th model 95 I returned.
-
I never thought to ask about the serial number and I'm not posting his whole reply, but he said he only took 3 shots with it, posted his thread on how hard the gun was cocking and sent it back.
If the weather gives me a chance, a bunch of shooting and my chrony should give me an idea if there's something wrong internally by the numbers I get and either way, I'll post a thread on everything about it when I'm done, good or bad.
-
Who knows if it's the same gun meaning action but hard to argue that it's not the same stock on it so unless they switched stocks you got the same gun ::)
-
Maybe we should start a thread where members enter the model/serial number and reason for return of the gun they are returning. Then when we buy refurbs or return new guns we can see if we are getting someone's recycled gun, and if the problem has been addressed. Might give guys some "ammo" when dealing with Hatsan USA. May also help "force" a little better quality control?
-
Was the rifle returned to Hatsan USA or to Midway? If returned to Hatsan it is less likely that it ended up back at Midway. I agree that the stock definitely looks like the same one.
-
He returned the rifle to Midway for a refund. Just a guess on my part, but they may have just kept it being he only fired it 3 times. I did send an email to Midway with the same pics I posted here and said I didn't know what their policies were pertaining to returned rifles with possible mechanical issues and that someone in the warehouse may have let one slip by and get resold but they haven't replied yet, not that that's any surprise...lol.
I'm thinking I have what may as well be a brand new Model 95 with 3 whole shots fired, got it for $118 and unless it's a major defect, can fix anything that might be wrong with it so it's all good :)

Outstanding!
You are obviously a cup is half full kind of guy... CONGRATS!!!
-
Gotta be the same rifle. I can't see Midway bothering to swap another action into the same stock. ??? In any event I'm confident that if there's anything really wrong with it you'll get 'er fixed and shooting great! ;) Me thinks you stole it! ;D

Midway replied and said they basically physically test every returned rifle and as long as they find no mechanical defects, it gets resold like this one did. I've had it out just lobbing cheap pellets at my back stop and I figure the chrony will back up the power I was seeing while the pellets were tearing it up. Also did the very unscientific bathroom scale test for cocking effort which came out right about 40 pounds so that's on the money too.
Not supposed to rain until tomorrow night so tomorrow morning, out with the chrony and test 8 or 10 of the most likely to work well pellets, then mount up the new BSA Tactical 3-12x44 SF scope I have sitting here in a box and see about accuracy and I'll post all that stuff after I get done.
And yep Ed, me has already thunk I stole it, even if were to end up as just a parts rifle...there's more in parts cost than I paid for the rifle, so either way, I win :)

After cleaning the barrel and a drop of lube on those barrel forks, I got outside long enough to chuck about 50 at my back stop and already knowing about what it should be shooting at fps wise, shot both FTT's and JSB 18.13's over the chrony to see what kind of shape the gas ram is in and it's right where it should be. The cocking, as expected, got easier the more I shot the rifle and with the heavier pellets, the QE barrel makes it quieter than my standard 95.
The FTT's averaged 758 for 10 shots (18.71 fpe) and the JSB's averaged 681 for 10 shots (18.67 fpe).
Next up was loose fitting the scope rings to make sure the dovetails were cut right and they are. So after moving the scope stop plate and a little blue loctite on those screws and tightening up the ring screws, I grabbed the scope that's going on the rifle. In keeping with how inexpensive I got the rifle, I went with the BSA 3-12x44 SF Tactical mildot scope I also picked up from Midway in their clearance section for $56.
Three more check marks in the positive column and a rifle that with the newly mounted scope and rings cost me a grand total of $195, which is less than most places want for the rifle itself....Oh Yeah, I'm definitely a happy guy. The only "blemish" I've found is a small dent in the stock right above the checkering and anyone that knows me, knows at some point I'll get that itch and the stock will get refinished so no big deal.
Only test left is accuracy. I may practice in 12-15 mph winds but I'll wait for a way less windy day to get the scope sighted in and right now, I'm thinking it will be right on the money like everything else has been. Here's pics with the scope mounted and that "blemish".

I'm thinking that blemish is more like a beauty mark now ;)

Winter is coming and I'll have plenty of down time and not be able to shoot so like I mentioned, at some point I'll get that refinishing itch and I have 2 95 stocks already under my belt, third one will be a piece of cake...lol

SHOOT DAT THANG !!!
A friend has one of these rifles from Midway & it shoots very well. I ran it over the chrony & its results are close to yours, so all is good !! Sounds like you got a deal !

LOL...it has been, I've put about 120 shots through it already but it's currently a downpour outside and supposed to all day, so no shooting for me today.

30 degrees, 8-10 mph winds being shifty but I went out anyway and tried to do a little sighting in. After getting close with the BSA, I made a 3 click up and 3 click left adjustment figuring it should put me just about dead on and my next 6 shots all went 2 inches high and right so I went back to the bench and mounted the Hawke Vantage 3-9x40 AO IR my gut originally told me I should mount. In defense of the BSA, it very likely was the loosening rear stock screw which has since been loctited and is currently drying, but I found it after mounting the Hawke and wasn't switching back.
Went back out and started over...left side is sighting in with FTT 5.53 head pellets as they've always been pretty solid accuracy wise in my Hatty's. Took 3 1/2 turns to get things down from the very top of the target to the bottom left center and I may well have the first Hatty I've had to shim a scope on but after a few clicks right and a a few more shots at the left, I moved to the right side target. By now the fingers were a little numb and the cold was finally settling in but I'm happy with how it's shooting so far and tomorrow is supposed to be 10+ degrees warmer and next to no wind so I'll be out again to dial things in a little better and try a few other pellets and see what happens, but it'll definitely be very accurate when I find the pellets it likes best.

Looking Very Good Steve !! 8) ;) ;) ;) ;) Best Wishes - Tom
