Title: Bubble level recommendation?
Post by: mcoulter on October 29, 2017, 08:51:00 PM
Like the subject says, what experiences have people had with different bubble levels?  I'm inclined to get something like this Wheeler:

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions would be great!

I really like the BKL's being they have so many mount options. 1" or 30 mm versions too !

I'm fine with the generic $3 versions that mount on the scope tube. Lots of vendors to choose from. Here are the first two that popped up:

Thanks for the links...I ordered the second one.  While I was there I noticed that there are 57 people on Ebay watching this.  For God's sakes it's $2.85 people.  Whut, you gonna' hold out until it is $2.75 or something?  Buy the sumbitch and move on with your lives.

if only low and slightly sideways works ... great
If you have side focus wheels, ring placement, visual access, clearance issues NOT so easy.

Rather than state buy this &  "move on with your lives" ... perhaps realizing those who need a level may just require more than one mounting option ???

Good info & a great price never the less  ;)

The eBay ones are what I use. Hard to level them for install but once done they work pretty well

Yep, I ordered 3 of the cheapie scope levels (to get the 18 cent discount on the third one).
One for the Bulldog, One for the Marauder, and the last one for the Maximus.

I got 8 of them and will be ordering more - will have one for each scope I have, including the spare ones

A friend lent me one to try. The problem is that if you mount it on the left side as shown, it blocks the sidewheel numbers. If you mount it on the right side, the inclination numbers are upside down.

It's still a good deal. If they made a right hand version, I would order a couple.

I found a picture in an ad showing a right hand version, but the other pictures in the same ad show it as a left hand. The one I tried was not reversible. More info needed.

I found a bubble/inclinometer with a choice of right or left side. For some reason the right side version is $2 more than the left hand version. I just ordered one of the right hand versions.

FWIW, I went the ebay route and ordered one nice 30mm level and one (slightly cheesier looking one) that's a 1-inch level.  Both came from the same seller at totaled about $15.  Should be here on Saturday.

The 30mm looks solid. The 1inch one looks no different from the $3 I got. Let us know how they works for you

I've finally shot with both of them and (for the price) I could not be happier.  As expected the 1" level was pretty hard to see.  I really have to "train" my non-scope eye to see it when behind the rifle.  The 30mm level is much easier to see.

I need a little help understanding how these levels work that attach to the scope tube, such as the BKL. Since the scope tube is round, how do you determine where to lock the level? I mean, regardless of the rifle's position, you can rotate the level to center the bubble. I guess I'm missing something, but I just don't see how it works. In order to square up the scope, you first need to know that both the shooting bench, and the rifle are level, I just don't get it.

1.  Align the vertical bar of the reticle to bisect the muzzle.  To do this, set up a mirror at 5 yards, set your scope's parallax to 10 yards, and look through the scope at your reflection in the mirror.  Rotate the scope in the rings until the reticle bisects both the muzzle and the objective bell simultaneously.
2.  Now orient the rifle so the reticle is level or plumb...to a known good level or plumb line.
3.  With the line oriented this way, lock down the level so it shows level.

Oops!  Photos are fixed now  :-)

And Jason has a great description of how to use a mirror.  I will try that too.  In my case I have two screws in the butt end of my stock I made sure these were vertical when aligning (rotating my scope in the rings) the scope crosshair with my plumb line.  Then I rotated my bubble level to how level.  It'll be interesting to see if how close this brings me to the mirror method...
