I finished refinishing the stock on my Plinkster and got it put back together. I got a bit over zealous sanding off the old finish and ended up sanding off some of the checkering. So, I bother a DEM-BART Master Set of Stock Checkering Tools from Brownell's and proceeded with my first attempt at checkering a gun stock. Beech is pretty hard as far a wood goes, so not exactly the best choice to begin with, but, I didn't really have a choice.
The checkering is not perfect, but to partially mask my booboos and also to provide some contrast, I did a bit of wood burning on the checkered areas. I also burned my initials into the butt of the hand grip, just to further make it mine!
The finish is Tung Oil over bare beech wood, so the color is very similar to the finish that comes on the Plinkster, but I think it shows the wood grain in a bit more detail than the original finish!
Next up, the Varmint! I have something totally different in mind for that one...
