Title: What a good, strong scope for a Diana 34 professional?
Post by: Branden O'connor on October 06, 2017, 02:05:54 PM
Hi everyone

I'd like to know what's a good strong scope for the above mentioned rifle. I had a BSA essential 3-12x44AO on it but I buggered it up trying to shim it. I have now ordered a UTG droop compensator mount and some weaver low mount rings. The BSA essential was and is a real tough scope to handle the huge recoil from this gun. So I'm looking for something with the same strength and a minimum of 10x magnification. So Yes, what do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

I've had a Hawke Airmax on my D34 for thousands of shots.  I shoot all springers; some magnums, and most of them have Hawke Airmax scopes mounted.  Their AMX reticle is my favorite.  I like the quality they offer at the price point and I've never had a problem with one.

Tight groups,
Bob

Regarding strong recoils resistance and good quality, it was advised here (by a pro shooter) the Sightron SIH 4-12x40AO FT.

In my (Brazilian) case, I'm importing one from Slovenia, due an exporting license is not needed there.

I'm also curious, why not the same BSA you had?

Thanks alot guys. I do like the UTG brand but unfortunately here in S.A. there prices are through the roof. As for BSA essential, everyone is out of stock. So I'm gonna go with the Hawke vantage 4-12x40AO. I have had one on my HW97k and it was flawless and worked very well under the 15+ FPE  throwing it around.  I regret selling it with my HW98. I know it will handle everything the Diana has to offer.

Once again, thank you for your assistance.

Cheers.

Branden,

Welcome to GTA. Terrific group of guys and gals here, always willing to share their ideas and help. They helped me out of several jams.

From what I read, lots of air gunning in the eastern Cape. Several popular bloggers praise the shooting and hunting opportunities. I hope you are enjoying same.

John

Thanks for the warm welcome John, much appreciated. Yes it is really a fantastic place to live and own air rifles. Unfortunatey here in Port Elizabeth, the wind blows EVERY SINGLE DAY!! It makes shooting much harder. But then again, so much more worth while when you hit what your aiming at. It also makes you a much better shooter from all the extra practice. Don't get me wrong, I'm not boasting, I'm just telling it like it is. Our club is growing every week and we are now looking at a change of venue for a third time in less than a year. Anyway, enough rambling, and once again, thanks for the hearty welcome, I look forward to chatting to every one here.

Cheers

Branden, you've piqued my curiousity from your stated "I buggered it up shimming" comment. Did you crush the tube a bit from over tightening? That should not effect the internal operation of the scope....I know 'cause I too have done this in my early days of experimentation. The aluminum tube is pretty thin and can't be strong-armed when securing the ring screws with a shim installed.  I also found out  :-[ JB Weld is a good filler along with some sanding and spray paint,, and the scope still worked.
I choose to shim my springer scopes just to keep them closest to adjusted optical center and found good results using black plastic (Folgers) coffee can lid cut to size and slipped into the lower half of the ring......and NOT over-tightening the top half,, and I haven't noticed any slippage or damage.

As to your thoughts of getting a Vantage, I really like the 3-12 SF mil-dot I have on my Condor. Can't knock the Essential, they're a decent scope for the $.

Thanks Jus, I have checked the BSA scope and everything seems to work still. So when I get the mount And rings, I'll put it back on and try it again, if it holds zero, thats where it will stay.... I'll still get another scope though (hawke).
