Title: ? about a Benjamin 347
Post by: Rabbit\Squirrel Killer on October 02, 2017, 11:53:02 PM
I read in a owners manual that it states "DO NOT PUT AWAY GUN CHARGED WITH AIR"
All the multi pump guns I have had experience with recommend storing them with 1-3 pumps. This sounds like a lawyer recommendation, not what's best to do for the rifle.

Is there a reason not to leave pressure in the 347 or should I leave pressure in it like all the other pumps guns I have?

Leave it with few pumps in it.

I agree with Habanero , just make sure it isn't loaded, of course.

That was what I thought, I just thought there might be some quirky thing with these since the original owners manual said not to. I thought it was probably just a precautionary statement on Benjamin's part.

The first thing I did with it was to test the Safety, and it doesn't work, not that I would count on a Safety, but it is still good to know that it doesn't work. Maybe I can fix it, I rarely use a Safety on any of my Air Guns, I just practice Safety, never pointing at anything I wouldn't want to shoot.

May just be what you said, lawyers getting involved.   A loaded gun, cocked and fully charged might just be a hazard.  Possible too that the seals can may get deformed if under full pressure for long periods.   Extruded seals can affect performance.

Advice on storage with a pump or two comes from Timmy Mac and others who work on them.  A little pressure against the seals keeps dirt/debris from getting into the compression chamber, at least that's what I understand.

Impressed that you read the manual.  Actually that you have the manual.  Did it specify max # of pumps?

I didn't read the whole thing but I did read the maximum pumps, and even then I was nervous about it, because the old wood and even old metals may be fatigued and I sure don't want to brake it! attached is a pic I took of page one of three. The pic came out kinda dark.
The instruction manual I have is a copy and not a very clear copy, it is blurry but readable.
It is for models 340, 342, 347 SUPER SINGLE SHOT AIR RIFLES

On pumping it states it part:
“Pump (4) or (5) strokes for ordinary use: to shoot hard, pump gun (10) or (12) times. It is necessary to pump these models up after each shot.

SHOOTING FORCE IS ADJUSTABLE. Three or four pumps are required for shooting ammo out. You determine number of pumps required for various uses after a little practice.”

VERY interesting.

I had a 342 and a Daisy 880 back in the '70s and could have sworn I remembered the difference between the two was the Daisy max was 10 pumps and the Benji had a max of 8

Sheridan Streaks were a max of 8, and they became Benjamin Sheridan When Benjamin bought Sheridan before Crosman bought Benjamin Sheridan. I know how memories can get mixed up, I have experienced some of that and have seen even more.

:P I may have eliminated some memory brain cells since then.
