Title: That tape inside UTG's scope rings...?
Post by: wahoowad on September 29, 2017, 02:44:17 PM
I own a number of UTG/Leapers scopes and even more of their rings. I know they are considered low end but don't think I've ever had a complaint or shortcoming with any of them. I am curious about that tape they put inside the scope ring, presumably it is there to both ensure a good hold on the scope as well as prevent the metal-to-metal contact between ring and scope?

I don't even remember - do other ring manufacturers do this?

I need some to replace in an older set of rings. What can I use that is like it? Their website calls it "High Quality Synthetic Tape Applied on Ring's Internal Surface for Scope and Mount Protection"

Hawke uses something similar in all of theirs and I've never had any of my 18 scopes move in those rings...as to where you'd get something like it, maybe email UTG CS and ask if they sell it or what they suggest?

You could use friction tape if you can find that!!
I found it at Wal-Mart:  https://www.walmart.com/ip/3M-Friction-Tape-0-75-in-x-240-in-1-roll/24949845?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227017651548&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40871789432&wl4=aud-273067695102:pla-78765143672&wl5=9025746&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla_multichannel&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=24949845&wl13=&veh=sem#read-more (https://www.walmart.com/ip/3M-Friction-Tape-0-75-in-x-240-in-1-roll/24949845?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227017651548&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40871789432&wl4=aud-273067695102:pla-78765143672&wl5=9025746&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla_multichannel&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=24949845&wl13=&veh=sem#read-more)

Reminds me of electrical friction tape used to overwrap/protect insulating DR (Double Rubber) tape in the days before wire nuts.

Maybe a little finer grade, but tacky both sides like cotton friction tape.

Note - friction tape is not the same stuff as "electrical tape".

Another option would be biseal tape.  It doesn't have a sticky side and pretty much bonds only to itself.

I believe it comes in different thicknesses.

The above is what I use.
Actually is a little "stickier" than the tape that comes on most rings.
I replace the tape every time I take the scope out of the rings.

On a couple of occasions, I used blue masking tape (it was right there on the workbench ... OK?) only to keep metal from metal contact when setting a scope. It worked reasonably well - even on a springer. I KNOW there are better options out there, but it was what I had on hand.

I have seen something similar on cheap rings from far east, but not on better name brand rings ......

I've found that the tape used by some ring manufacturers' tends to become a sticky mess after being on the gun for a while. I've even noticed a bit of oozing adhesive from between ring and scope....and this is being stored in a cooler temp basement safe.
Often wondered that the adhesive absorbs the gun oils evaporating in the air of the safe?   As most shooters probably do, wiping down the metal / fingerprints off a rifle before storage with a cloth or mitt using any brand of gun cleaner/oil,,, not using a saturated cloth, just a light spray, but the stuff still has contents that evaporate.

I've had good experiences using the adhesive part of "Post-It" notes trimmed to size with scissors and fit inside the rings, much less adhesive and seems to hold the scope secure and release easier when screws are removed.

Millet rings also has the tape, very thin.
I just got a new set of no brand 30mm rings that had the inside tape also.
So far I have never had any problems to a sticky mess.

I like to use Liquid Electrical Tape:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FPAN2K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FPAN2K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Remove any old tape, very light sanding, clean with rubbing alcohol and then apply a thin coat of the liquid tape.  Easy to remove from the rings and re-coat if you end up changing scopes and it needs to be touched up.

As others have mentioned, electrical cloth friction tape works well (not PVC electrical tape) but here is a pic of one of my aluminum Weaver mount rings that doesn't come with "tape"...........

As you can see the anodizing has worn thin where the scope tube was clamped. The "rubbing off" of the anodizing happened with only 12 in/lbs of screw torque and even though the scope tube was un-dented the aluminum color did transfer to the black scope tube and it couldn't be removed with denatured alcohol. LOL....what did work however was to apply black permanent marker to the marks and smooth it out with my fingers. Worked a treat and I found that my fingers were "de-blacked" using WD40 (who knew?)
