Title: shooting box
Post by: Aldea6 on September 28, 2017, 10:31:50 AM
Hello , I love target shooting from my garden, but was always upset by the noise of the .25 pellet hitting the target paper.
So I decided to build a box from 1/2" plywood , insulated inside with soundproof foam and filled with linen and sand bags . Target is 5" inside the box ( maintained by 4 magnets) , and the box dimensions are 25"X12"X15". I put a cover with a plexiglass window over the target to give some light.
Now I can shoot all day long without anyone knowing it.

But you're still having .25 pellets hit target paper?

J/K!

Try Duct seal from Homedepot it really lowers the sound of impact.

Rubber mulch is another good alternative, and easy to clean too! Just dump in water and the mulch floats/lead sinks.  ;)

Great 👍  idea. I was thinking of a screen filter for the pellet. Your idea is better. I tried duct seal but it has a higher maintenance duty cycle than rubber mulch plus duct seal doesn't last longer than rubber mulch. Hit it with a higher energy rifle in 1 bulls eye, like 10 shots and it just gave way. I tried both at point blank doing Chrony work and rubber mulch is very durable.

Another benefit is you can check for deformations from the barrel if you shoot into a clean batch so you can find the right pellet...  ::) don't ask... lol
It's how I found out about the transfer port shaving my bullets in my Sniper.

Another way to decrease the impact noise on the target itself is to use a softer paper , like towel paper, but it tends to tear up easily , instead of punching a neat hole.
Of course , the .25 cal is also more noisy than a .22

Separating the pellets from the rubber mulch by floating it in water does not work with the mulch I bought from Home Depot.  The shredded rubber is denser than water.  However, it does a great job at absorbing the energy from even high powered airguns.  I have put literally thousands of pellets into my trap and it has stopped every one.  The mulch fills back in on itself so even repeatedly shooting the same spot does not bore a channel thru.

Great idea! I currently have a cardboard box full of the rubber mulch and it works great but is a little noisy. I've never emptied it and I just duct tape the box when it starts getting chewed up. I might have to try one of these when I move to the suburbs soon.
