Yesterday I made a valve nut removal tool out of a 1/4" socket and was shocked that it actually worked! I got the nut off, but I can't pull the valve out because I don't have the "other side" of the tool that screws onto the stem and pulls the valve out.
Can the valve be removed without that tool? If not, is there a way for a non-machinist to make the tool? Thanks.

Spiral Groove made one... among others here.
But I remember SpiralGroove's post called out the tap needed for the funky thread pitch.
Do a search on his posts

I was thinking more along the lines of finding a nut with the right threads and soldering it to an allen wrench. Just need to know what kind of threads and if such a nut would be readily available.

A quick search here on GTA's Vintage gate found this...

OUCH!
Don't think you will find a nut like that anytime soon.

Found the one I suggested you look for earlier...

made a batch of valve tools recently but I'm in the UK so postage would make them dearer than what you can buy them

Very nice! Good work.
