Title: MRODAIR / SPA PP700 gets a NEW regulator !! Enough is enough !!!!
Post by: Motorhead on September 07, 2017, 09:51:46 PM
:P like most who own these pistols had too tweak on the regulator settings, wait for it to settle in / break in etc ... only to still end up with 30 FPS +/- or more swings in velocity  :P
So ... having read of late that HuMa had a drop in regulator, looked at the pictures of it taking note it was a basic universal model spec sized with bottom face o-ring.
No problem replicating having BLANK universal regulators in stock.  An 1/2 hour or so in lathe work we have a drop in PP700 regulator made up !!

Pistol got the air emptied out, air tank removed, OEM regulator unscrewed and on the bench.  Simply unscrewed the small screw  & seat taking it OUT of the spool ... Placed a metric 1.5x13 o-ring into the cavity of bottle mount nipple taking the place of the seat to seal the assembly up.  ( left bevels in place being now OEM regs is in full bypass now.

Placed the HuMa into the pressure setting fixture and went for 100 Bar set point.  That done assembled pistol with the HuMa reg in the tube .... Easy Peezy !!
Over onto the chrony with 8.4 JSB leaving all previous hammer settings as they were previous. ( Gun was set to shoot @ 740 fps with 8.4s' )
745/750 fps shot after shot after shot  ;D ;D  Dumb luck on the guessing of set pressure hitting the mark almost on the button 1st try  ::)

The PP700 now is operating as it should for a regulated gun ... NO MORE screwing around, NO MORE velocity swings, NO MORE guessing where shots are going to be now & forever more !!

Kills me to install a $130.00 regulator into a $200 gun, but that said ... It just miens that gun actually may get shot more now no longer being a nasty step child locked in the safe.

Scott

How's the shot count? I didn't want to buy a Huma, either but I want this thing ready for the Nationals match.

Exactly ... only real reason is Novembers nationals.
as too shot count .. no clue, when just above 100 bar it gets refilled & will deal with shot count what ever it is ???
Tho, as set it will be a tad worse than previous being we gave up air tank space for the reg. It was as set @ same velocity making near 50 shots per fill.

Glad to hear that worked out good for you Scott !!! I personally have no need for one myself because the reg that comes in them works good when adjusted at higher velocities, I'm not really a paper puncher at all.  Click on my signature pic for one of my better hunts this summer. ;)

Scott, for the intended use you're going for, it is worth it.  You guys punching paper at a competitive level- this seems like a fantastic way to get into the mix with a superbly accurate pistol.  I've priced some of the higher-end PCP pistols, and there's still nothing like these that offers all this bang for the buck even after the effort of replacing the regulator.

Mine is an albeit astoundingly accurate plinker and part-time pesting tool, and the mild variations I get have no bearing at my shorter ranges.  Between me and the rest of you guys n gals, I'd love to know if SPA is making these barrels or if they are coming from elsewhere.  I've never had any barreled projectile launcher that is so incredibly unpicky about what you shoot.  At some point (next year maybe) I'll invest in the .22.  I've love to see how it handles Polymags, Gamo Redfires, and 17-grain Ruger pointed- 3 pellets I adore for pesting.

Early on ( near 2 years ago now ) when doing a modification thread about it here on the GTA, had used one of the AOA blowout barrels that FX dumped when changing factory location  & exclusive use of there smooth twist.   Barrel was a german .177 LW and once cut to fit action @ 13 1/4" long IIRC.  ACCURATE making a 10 shot hole of @ 1/4" total shot off bags.
My use is that of Competitive Pistol Field Target ( Hunter Class ) and in such need as tight a spread in velocity as possible.  Having POI changes vertically due to velocity fluctuations is just unacceptable from a competition gun.

Considering the overall cost, would Prod be a better option than Airmax?

I bought mine because of the sale price this past spring. I've have a Prod, and the airmax is more accurate from my experience. Do you need a repeater/magazine fed gun? The Prod was much quieter.

The PRod is bulkier, for sure, and also comes unregulated.  I can only vouch for my own pistol, but I've yet to read about any PRod that has a stock barrel as unpicky as my SPA.  I can reach for almost any pellet in my .177 arsenal and I know I can shoot tight groups.  Given the cost of adding a different regulator + the base cost of the PP700 versus a bone-stock PRod, I'd personally have a hard time justifying the latter.  Case in point- my PP700 was my first PCP- and it took several months of agonizing over a very comprehensive spreadsheet to make that decision.  Haven't had any regrets, which is funny cuz I thought the PRod was almost a sure thing to be that first Dark Side purchase.  If a repeater is preferred, then the PRod is a better choice.  But it is only a matter of time before CP-1M CO2 SPA pistol start popping up with full HPA conversions as a kit for sale.  There's no question in my mind all the manufacturers should be keeping an eye on what SPA is putting out there, and as well as they sell, the aftermarket will likely start to really blow up.  A good set of "bones" and accurate barrels make them a good platform.

Scott- I can see why you require such consistency.  High-level competition requires being able to make the exact same shot with 100% predictability.  I'd still like to know where these SPA barrels are getting made, as the PP700 MKII is sold in several overseas markets as a Match-grade pistol.

With a shoulder stock this would make one super little carbine

I would like it to be accurate, quiet, compact, multi-shot, in the order of importance. So nothing is perfect yet.

The current price is $209, is that higher than the spring sale?

Great points. I more look for hunting and plinking so a regulator may or may not be needed. Same can be said about magzines. Anything changed from the time you purchased the gun because your detailed analysis and weighting.

For CP2 HPA conversion, I do not know much about HPA but I assume it will be something a lot better than CO2, I should google. Do you expect the CP2 with HPA will be a better option than PP700?

I got tired of waiting so I designed and machined a folding stock for the PP700. I am working on a retracting stock next.
