Hi all,
This 1984 Crosman 66 holds and shoots hard, but had apparently been stored barrel-down in a puddle. The end of the bore was totally rusted. I scrubbed it with a brass brush and Remington 40x bore cleaner until patches pulled through smoothly, but it still had a horizontal spread when trying to group. Last night, I took the front sight/plug out and recrowned. I also found an o-ring that was a perfect size to fit snugly around the barrel and support it against the shroud. A little pellet testing showed it was worth the effort and really likes JSBs. Not bad for a flea market find.
Next, I might like to stuff the piston. Is there a certain sized nail that fits right in?
Thanks for reading.

I think they use 16 d nails on the 880. Might start there. Remember to clean everything up real good with alcohol so the epoxy sticks.
-
Other than missing the end of the forearm, I'd say that's a great scores and luckily it still works and is pretty accurate.
-
I would be happy with that, considering the condition it was in. Remember, you cannot do but just so much to these inexpensive rifles.

The new crosman 760 piston is longer then the old one. It might be worth trying in your 66.

I would think a metal Piston rod for a legacy 1000 ( basically a 2100 with a few changes to try and " make it better " ) would be a better thing to try if he's going to replace it.
I believe the 2100 pump tubes are the same length so i don't see why it wouldn't work.

Good info, guys. I've been meaning to order some Crosman parts. I'll add those to the list.
Thank you!

I'm pretty sure they'll work, but you might want to find out for sure.

From looking at the evp's, it looms like the 66's use the same length piston/rod as the 13xx's, so I'm guessing the 2100 piston would be too long.

The 66 is more similar to a 760, the only differences (other than stock) between the 66 and 760 are the longer tube and linkage on the 66, and the 66 has a straw barrel with shroud like a 2100 (although different parts). The 2100 tube is longer on both ends and is not a drop in for a 66, it would take modification.

I just nail stuffed a new 760 piston and put it in a 66. There was no change is fps. Stuffing only seems to work on the older piston as the plastic wasn't up to the task.
-
Yeah really, the only benefit to stuffing a plastic piston is if you plan on over pumping. I don't over pump. And if I was I would enlist someone to make a solid piston for me. The stuffed piston was for modders on a budget. The Daisy 880 had a list of low budget mods as long as your arm. I think best case scenario was maybe 50 fps. And that was pumping 12 to 15 times.

I put some 18 rounds through the 760-D I got in the post yesterday at a Gamo target. The Beeman silver bears shot okay, but I'll try some other light pellets I have. And those were with 8 pumps each. That thing got a drop of Pellgun oil on the piston twice. But it still got hard to pump after awhile! Shoots low and to the right at close range. Seems like Crosman's all love at least 10yds? Barrel mount could be worn, causing droop? I also have to take it apart to clean & polish the barrel and pump tube to reblue them, mounting screws, etc. Mac1 seal/piston upgrade for this one too, I hope will pump up the velocity a bit vs factory?
I find it interesting your 66 has a metal receiver? What year is it vs this 760-D " Pumpmaster" with it's plastic receiver? The serial number on it is; 498100593. I also see it has the same bolt as my Kmart version of the Nylon 66 called a Mohawk 10c?! Anyway, I cleaned it up and enjoyed shooting it with the old Weaver DualX today.

Hi all,
I also found an o-ring that was a perfect size to fit snugly around the barrel and support it against the shroud.
Hey Dan what size O ring did you use to stabilize barrel? And was it very hard to remove barrel to install O ring? Thanks.

Im sorry I don't know what size the o-ring was, but it probably came from a Harbor Freight set. I don't have the gun with me right now, but I can check next week if that would help.
It was very easy to install- no need to remove the barrel. Just remove the front sight/barrel plug and slide the o-ring in over the muzzle.
Have fun!

Thanks Dan. No need to get back to me, I can experiment with O rings. Mainly wanted to know how complicated it was to install O ring. I have an old Daisy 880 that I've taken apart to modify many times (including doing a barrel stabilization mod by wrapping with electrical tape), but it appears that the 66 is lots more complicated to disassemble and put back together. It looks like the barrel mod you've done is pretty simple though, I'll have to try it.
