Title: Changes, updates and improvements
Post by: ezman604 on August 31, 2017, 04:13:20 PM
This will be almost like one of my Ramblings posts, that I've not made in a while. First, a little background on one of the issues I want to discuss.
GTA Forums thankfully continues to grow. We receive 10-20 new member applications daily. About 6 months ago we started getting more and more spammer attempts to gain access to the forum. We went from 10-20 to more like 90-100 daily. How do we know they were spammers? Well, your admin team has for several years manually verified every member applications. That in itself can be a chore for us, but well worth it. When we started seeing the onslaught of spammers, we had to ask two of our moderators to step up to help us admins out. I can't give enough thanks to vigilandy (Andy) and Booger (Jesse) for stepping up to the task. They really didn't know what they were volunteering for. LOL
But let me tell you folks, doing this day in and day out can and will burn a person out. These guys, as well as Rocker1 (David) and amb5500c (Richard), have hung in there and continued to do the job that HAD to be done. I had hoped the spammers would eventually get the message that they were not welcome and we were not going to give up to let them in. But they kept on trying.
So, I asked our programmer to come up with something to give us a little relief. For the last two days he has been examining and working on coding changes to the registration process. We have to make sure we don't stifle the GOOD members but to be able to identify and turn away the bad ones. As of a couple of hours ago we have a new registration process in place and I can see an IMMEDIATE change for the good!!! WHEW.....
Since he was in the system and working already, we talked about another item many of you requested. And that is a "like" tab for posts. So, he is working on implementing that even as I type. We listen to you guys & gals and do what we can to improve the forum and keep it secure as well as fun. He is VERY good to us as far as charges. I did want to pass along to you that two days of coding and work only cost us $240 from the GTA treasury. Your donations once again go toward maintaining and improving our forum. Keep the ideas for improvement flowing. As we grow we want to stay current and improve wherever we can afford to.
:)
Thanks to all for the donations and the ideas to keep GTA Forums the BEST on the internet!!!!
"A Cut Above The Rest"
And as always....
SAFE & Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Noticed the MY LIKES 0 add on today. I personally will use that in lieu of adding a post that just repeats what others may have said in a positive light about a particular post. Should alleviate a bunch of repetitive posts. I use this a lot on other forums I'm on. Thanks for the added feature, and all that you and the mods/admins do to keep this forum spammer free.

LOL, where's the dang Like button!  Guess I gotta just +1 it!

On a serious note- Dave, thank you (and thank the other Mods/Admins) for doing a bang-up job keeping this one of the best little cubbyholes on the !int@rw3bs.

Great news about the updates Dave! Thanks.
I hope it takes some of the burden off you guys screening new members. Of course, that means more Booger posts so...   ;D

Seriously, though, I don't see where to click on a button anywhere to 'like', but I do see a new icon for 'share this'. I see somebody liked something of mine, but have no idea what post or comment or whatever they 'liked'. I am on an ancient Macbook at the moment, running Snow Leopard 10.8.6, iirc, so maybe that is the problem?

Thanks again, as I said, I'd 'like' this post, if I knew how, ha ha!

I can't see where to LIKE either.  I have an ad blocker running, but I don't see anyone chiming in that they SEE a way to LIKE something.

As long as the Like option is used to eliminate duplicative posts and doesn't turn into a popularity contest, great.  Like others, I can see the +/- notation on the posts but do not see any way to do a Like or Dislike.

This is strange. Many of us see the Like thumbs up icon (at the end of the text of a post) and many can't. FYI you will not have a Like icon in YOUR post, only on others replies.

I thank all the Admins and Mods for all the hard work and all the improvements. It's never easy wearing out the trash   Thanks for all the hard work, keep it up.

For the like post addition, never seen it I must be missing it. But it's a cool idea.

Aww, as an ex-cheerleader, I need it to become a popularity contest. Oh, wait, yeah, I quit that &^^& almost immediately in order to PLAY sports myself, not just support them, ha ha. I do agree, it could easily get to be high-school-ish at times..

But, I for one, will wear my minus count as a badge of honor, as much, or more, than my pluses, ha ha!

I turned my ad blocker off, and I still don't see the "Like me" icon.  I'm using latest version of Firefox.

Not sure why I even care, since I just shake my head at people bragging about how many "likes" their posts get on Facebook in order to stroke their ego.  I guess it's just the computer programmer in me wanting things to work right.

And I'm told it's only available on the forum default theme. If you have changed your theme, this is why it's missing. Will see about loading it on all themes.

I have not changed my theme and I don't see it.  I assume I am on the default theme since I never changed it.

I see the "Like This" in Dave's copy of Chickie's post and Techie's post but only in the copy, not in the original posts.

This could be a configuration thing in my Firefox.  I don't think it's in my firewall or ad blocker software.

I see no box for Dislike, either.  The Like (if implemented) may make it too much like Facebook - and I don't DO Facebook.

I fear GTA is as close to social media as this old curmudgeon gets.

That's why I no longer do IT, because of the dreaded phantom.

I am still with the default setting just went and confirmed it all.  It may take a little more to work things out.

It's like trying to power up a pcp, you add one thing you got to address two others. One solution adds two more issues to deal with.

The Like with the thumb was added to the default theme only. Other themes will probably see the "+/-" but no one can give negative, I fixed that.

I just forced permissions for major groups, do you all see it now?

Well, looks like it's working for you, but I guess you have maximum permissions since you are an administrator.  When I click on "Attachments and other options", I don't get the Browse button to select a file.  However I do still get that button on all the other posts I tried it on.  I'd show you a screen shot, but I can't attach it here!

An attachment. Seems working to me. Edits made have not touched attachments. This is a permissions issue that admin can give you.

The Announcement Gate is reserved for admins only to create posts. THAT must be the issue. Anyone can reply but only admin can create a post with attachments.

Thanks GTA staff. I sincerely believe this is the best forum on the internet. Y'all do a fantastic job at keeping out spammers and scammers, and really an incredible job at keeping things cordial and honest. No politics (in terms of "brands" allowed on the site), no drama, no cluttered annoying advertising... just a bunch of people loving and advancing the sport. Bravo y'all and again, thank you.

MANY thanks Nick, you're the BEST!!!
And Rick, thanks for the kind words. GTA is a member owned and managed site. We are not sponsored or owned by any company. And operate solely on donations so we are not biased toward any brand. We are, as you put it, just a bunch of avid airgunners. :)
And the kind words are the ONLY pay your all volunteer staff get. So it is much appreciated!!!

Cool!

I gotta say though, the thumb kind of sticks out like a sore...  Well, thumb.

I think maybe we should design a different icon that would fit GTA's theme a little better?  Probably for the benefit anyway since that way there's no risk of infringing on FB's little intellectual-property there either.

Just a thought :)

Looks like the LIKES are totaling up for all post by the member instead of for a specific post.  Hard to keep up with which post was the LIKED post.  I guess that's by design.  I would like to see them for the specific post which would be more telling of that particular post.  A dislike would be informative too.

I was thinking it too. Another (hockey) forum I go to has a "Thank post" instead for a specific post. Seems to work pretty smoothly.

Looks like they (admin) have switched over to a topic rating system, see the stars.  You can now rate the topic with 5 stars or less.  I think this is much better than the popularity vote  "like" system it replaced.  I of course could be wrong but it is my take on it.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place but I don't see where one can give stars to a topic, unless you are supposed to click on the stars in the column to the right of the topics list for a gate.  And I cannot see that any topic has received any stars so far, is that correct?

Thanks, man, with your help I have finally figured it out.  One problem is that I usually don't go in through gates themselves, which is the only place you can see topic ratings.  Instead, I usually just click on the New Posts box at the left of the gate itself.  That takes me to those posts but doesn't show the entire gate contents, nor does it show topic ratings.

The idea behind this whole deal was to create a system where members could mark a post to show it was useful or informative to them. That way, at a glance, you could see if a post might be of help to you. We did not want a popularity "like" button for members. No, we're not like other social media sites and hope to not be. This was a good idea expressed by many and I hope we get it ironed out to make it easy to understand and for it to be a useful resource here.
No, we will not have a karma like or dislike for members again. Been there done that. And bought the t-shirt. Don't care to go back.

Title: Re: Changes, updates and improvements
Post by: triggertreat on September 04, 2017, 04:31:44 PM

I do it a little differently.  I have a shortcut on my tool bar that I click that takes me directly to the "Darkside" and one to the "Members classifieds".  Just one click and I am there where I can see the new post and other past post along with the ratings and such.  I mark all unread after I am done so next time I can easily see any new post since my last visit.  I click the "notify" button on the topics I want to follow and receive an email on when there is a new post on that topic so I don't miss them or have to continually check for them.
I manually check this gate every once in awhile to see what admin is up to, but could put in a quick link or a notify if desired.  I also have my email set to delete old notifications so my email stays uncluttered with notifications.  I also have my email setup where I can save particular notifications if I want to refer to them later because topics can get buried pretty quick on this active forum.  This all makes it simple and easy for me to manage this and other forums.

No, this is not part of GTA or this code that was written into our software. I suggest you use Malwarebytes to scan your computer and remove any malicious spam or junk from your computer.

Thanks Dave
I have already done this several times today.
Every time I log in, the same info shows, (Security notice) and only for this site??.

My SIL is a computer geek, and he checked out everything, scanning ,running several different security/Malwarebytes programs etc,
and it keeps showing up on this site only..

Not sure what to do, now.

Tia,
Don

Lizzie, Dave or other Admin types,

FWIW,
I just found out on my computer, that the main GTA site, has/is downloading,
a unauthorized scripts/site called: www.dingit.tv (http://www.dingit.tv), since the new changes etc.

I may be full of it, but the tab always shows up when I click on the main GTA site.

Is this unauthorized site part of GTA??

I know very little about a computer, so be easy on me.

Tia,
Don

No, this is not part of GTA or this code that was written into our software. I suggest you use Malwarebytes to scan your computer and remove any malicious spam or junk from your computer.

I appreciate all the efforts you guys put forth to keep this the best air gun forum in the World. I also see how you do all you can to keep members happy. But I gotta say... I'm glad you changed your minds on the like button. I think in the short time it was here it already showed signs of taking the uniqueness and the old school atmosphere that Gene and Bob breathed into it away. I come here to learn, share and meet people with the same interests and passion as I do. We can like and dislike whatever we choose but I don't think there is any usefulness in expressing it openly.
On the other hand.... I think rating a thread for it's content is a great idea... as long as it's used as intended.
We've seen trolls and folks only expressing their opinions being accused of being trolls. At the end of the day... it's not about popularity. Who gives a rat's butt if someone don't agree with me or vise versa. We have the right to express our own opinions. Enlightening and criticizing are two different things as they should be. If I'm headed down the wrong road, please tap me on the shoulder and offer a check up.
I probably do more socializing and going off topic than 90% of the other active members.... that's just me.
It's NOT social media... It IS a gift to all of us from 2 legends with unmeasured passion for airgunning and knowledge sharing. Taking too much away from it's originality is tantamount to taking the split window out of the Volkswagon.
Let's not go there.

Ooh. At one time I had 5 VW vans in my yard, one a 1966 Westphalia, 6V. You know what I mean. I drove it everyday (circa 1986). Just for collectors today. No AC. But I really do appreciate your comment. And that was a fun fun drive, if under powered by today's standards.
